Websites aside, is it theoretically possible for the bitcoin-qt client to support some kind of 2nd factor authentication?
Yes/No.  It does support two factor authentication: Thats what wallet encryption is, you're protected by knowledge of the password and possession of the wallet file.

But no, because control over your computer moots security provided only by your computer.

There are a number of hardware wallet devices coming out which outsource possession of private keys to USB dongles that require a button press to authorize a transaction... those will keep you safe even if your computer is compromised.

Hardware keys are definitely the way to go for anybody in this game - I have invested a lot of money for somebody with a family to raise in bitcoin as I could see the potential for the future and it was worth the gamble. I still believe in the concept, just clearly the security needs to be addressed.

This experience for me, whilst devastating, has taught me some interesting lessons and that is a positive I can take away from the whole thing.

Oh and if the bastard who stole my money ever reads this - you are forgiven for stealing my money. You are not forgiven for the pain you caused myself and more importantly my wife.

It's interesting to me that they were careful enough to empty the website before emptying the wallet, is that really the case?

In any case, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

Yes they sold my shares at a marginal loss to myself (about 5%) - I initially thought that something had happened on btct and my shares were forcibly sold for some bizarre reason. Figured initially that at least the money was safe having gone to my wallet. Then decided to check my total balance on blockchain.info and that's when I realised I have been wiped out.

Obviously power bills, hardware investment etc coming to nothing has totally upset the missus - so yeah thanks to the scumbags for hurting real people in the name of greed. That hurt inflicted really eclipses the 50 or so bitcoins I am out. Small beer to some, a lot to small timers.

No 2FA on my btc-tc account.
Account withdrawals were locked to my own wallet.
Own wallet is local BitcoinQT.

Hi,

Just a word of warning to everybody out there from somebody who is now forcibly out of the Bitcoin game.

I hold a BTCT account.  This account was compromised, I had locked the payout address to my own wallet.

My various shares were all cashed out to my address.

Subsequently my wallet was emptied (including some 15 or so other bitcoins I had)

My Wallet was covered with a 25 character long passphrase. I can only assume that my home computer has a key logger installed.

1EYz2DwJy2xj3o7cPtVsFPXX6C2moMrYXj now has over 50 bitcoins of mine.

Given my Bitcoin investment money was set aside for my young family, even though its not a huge amount of money I am completely gutted.

Cheers

7  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU FPGA overc monit fanspd RPC stratum linux/windws/osx/mip/r-pi 2.11.2 on: March 16, 2013, 08:49:26 AM
ok got myself up and running - put a dummy plug on the 5770 and got it running straight away. Thought the dummy plugs were only necessary for Windows - maybe you can get away without them on Ubuntu but for the sake of 3 x 22c resistors and one of the plethora of DVI/VGA convertors I have in the parts bin it finished off 4 days of stuffing around quite quickly.

Although when I first ran cgminer I was getting really bad hash rate, dropped the -g to 1 and 5770 worked and 7950 halved, tried to do "-g 2,1" but errored with "2,1 is not an integer". So running two instances of cgminer - maybe this could be fixed in a future release?

Hash rates disappointing compared to cgminer in windows 7 on identical 5770. So going to abandon Ubuntu for now and try windows 7...

Although I do read that I have been asking for trouble mixing 5XXX and 7XXX cards which may not have helped either.

I was hoping by now I could have said something like "GPU mining is deprecated, only ASIC code is supported from here on"... but it seems that was a pipedream  Tongue, and scrypt is coming back to haunt me with a vengeance  Roll Eyes I haven't seen so many new questions about GPU mining in over a year...

lol - ASICs just mean that GPU scrypt miners may just start out with LTC (or even Novacoin?).

Despite grabbing the 12.10 image and saying yes to d/load updates during the installation I still seem to be outstanding some 256 Mb of updates for Ubuntu so I will let those download/install and come back to this later in the day

Kano - If the Unity interface is running X must be running? Perhaps my Solaris background is leading me astray there tho? - Linux experience to date is limited. Ultimately I intend running headless - I don't want or need anything more than ssh to connect.

Thanks for that - I had run the --initial command and thats whats stopped me mining completely before and ended up reinstalling Ubuntu again - having run that now I get...

OK having some difficulties with a 2nd gfx card, reinstalled a couple of time and starting to tear my hair out a bit now so forgive the nooby questions but learning a lot here.

Have installed Ubuntu 12.10, the latest catalyst drivers, rebooted, installed the AMD SDK rebooted again and then installed the pre-built cgminer 2.11.2 as that was built on the same platform. Also run an aticonfig install.

I have an AMD Radeon 7950 which is working fine and hooked up to my TV currently via VGA port. Also installed is a 5770 that I got cheap so decided that would be a great bump.

Problem is i cannot mine on the 5770.
cgminer -n states

if I do an aticonfig --list-adapters both cards can be seen...

 * 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
  1. 02:00.0 ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series

* - Default adapter

I have hooked up the 5770 to HDMI to make sure the card came up but I am not getting any output there either so I am thinking either the card is partly cactus or I have just not it right in Ubuntu?

Any pointers appreciated.

I tried,   Cry just got another response from Marcus.

"Hello Andrew,

Please be advised that our App does not work with iPhone 4 and higher versions as these devices are newer and we have to release a newer version of our app and we are working on that.
"
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins are now Mobile and EASY - QR/Wallet/Android/iOS - MtGox Mobile on: February 19, 2013, 01:17:50 PM
mtgox are still keeping the ticket alive... Grin

"Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your reply Could you please let us know what is the IPhone model that you are using.

Thanks,

MtGox.com Team"

"Hi Marcus, I am currently using an iPhone 4S, but have access to other devices if need be.
Regards
Andrew"

I have nudged mtgox again on iOS support and received nothing more helpful than previous posters.

I raised a ticket with mtgox
"Hi, I understand that iOS 5 is no longer supported, however the current release is iOS 6.1.1. Furthermore I understand that mtgox have been responsible for this application since early 2012 and I have seen reports since mid last year about this same freezing problem. Do MTGOX actually intend any development or is iOS simply a shelved project?
Cheers
Andrew"

And received the following response from Marcus in mtgox support.

"Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your email. We are sorry to inform you that our app does not work with iOS 5. We are currently working on developing a new app that will work with new Iphone models and once that is done we will make an announcement. However we do not have a ETA on this.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact Mt.Gox Support

Thanks,

MtGox.com Team"

To which I left the following feedback

"This ticket has been rated as Bad, I'm unsatisfied
With the following comment:
simply marked ticket as resolved without actually attempting to provide any information. MTGOX Application has been broken for a long time now and there is no information forthcoming. If the application is abandoned by mtgox then would appreciate knowing this so iOS users can move on. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=31710.60 has a lot of people experiencing the same problem and been told it will get fixed but this is going back to mid last year."

Don't hold your breath :-(

17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: RaspberryPi litecoin CPU and GPU miner bounty on: August 23, 2012, 09:53:54 AM
Pi's are now generally available. Plus I want to thrash the fuck out of my iPhone before the rumored release of the iPhone 5 (and the expiry of my warranty)

Is development still alive? Still require funding?

No, so the website loads first, including the opt out button.
