Op. It seems that your general idea is just to use bitcoin on daily basis and I can agree with you. The problem of this solution is however volatile bitcoin nature. As you may know not that long ago bitcoin price was just about around $200 now we are almost at $300. For many people who remember 'old' higer bitcoin price this is unacceptable to spend bitcoin now.
Thats why I treat bitcoin like gold and I wouldn't go around doing groceries and having a cup of coffe paying with gold. I'll let these damn whales do the spending for now, when the price stabilizes at 100K i'll do some shopping.

I was mining them when they were $5. I 'wasted' what would now be a fortune on computer games and random gadgets. I watched the price jump in April 13 and again in Dec 13. I watched it drop, drop and drop some more.

It's not going back to $1000 anytime soon IMO. I've seen all sorts of random predictions and TA theories that never panned out in this sub.

I've got a few stashed, and I've bought some to spend just to actually participate in the great bitcoin 'experiment' (holding is boring, and I needed a new RasPi)

If we're in the long tail and it gradually falls to $0.00 then at least I've had something out of it (I could have had more, or I could have had zero)

If we're experiencing the beginning of an organic growth period where we see a steady increase in value then I also win.

If there's something you want to buy, consider paying with bitcoin. Either buy BTC specifically for the purchase, or use your holdings and put it back later.
It might end up costing you a faction more or less than a cash purchase, but at least you'll have used it for something. 5 years from now you can joke about how you 'wasted' BTC on some pointless purchase, just like the 10,000 BTC pizza in 2010.

You must be new here. HODL doesn't mean "getting out at the right time." HODL means to clutch those bitcoins tighter in your fist as the price declines ever lower.

same misguided affliction. It's not going to take off if they're locked in a cold wallet.

Same misguided belief that you do know what bitcoin is for. You seem to believe that it's for transfering your fiat across the internet and somehow think that it's the main and only purpose of it. However, you are infinitely far from the truth, which noone actually knows fully - we are now a bunch of monkeys with an electronic microscope. Sure, you can crack coconuts with it, but smarter monkeys have a vision that it might be used for more. And that you don't need to crack open every coconut with it to get there.

Very profound. So the right strategy (in your opinion) would be to hoard them and hope they become useful for something in the future, the theory being that the more you have the better (for you)?

In my opinion, using them in a primitive bartering society style (swapping them for goods and/or services) is more likely to drive adoption and expand usage.

If they're used more they will become more desirable to possess and therefore scarce, which will in turn increase their value (in cash terms)

Did you have to give ID to buy them at an ATM, and did you pay with cash? I have never used an ATM before. Where does the price you pay come from, is it based on an exchange's price?

It was this one:

http://coinatmradar.com/bitcoin_atm/299/bitcoin-atm-lamassu-manchester-cex-store-manchester-arndale/

bitpay price, 0% fees, no ID required. Just feed it with cash.

Rather than obsessively checking the price and seeing if my coins have increased in value all the while kicking myself about not getting out at the peak (a.k.a HODLing), I've hit upon a new method for growing the bitcoin ecosystem and thus hopefully the value:

I bought some bitcoin (from an ATM in Manchester, UK) and have spent them on a new Raspberry pi, some beers and a few DVD's. As the value has increased, I got the stuff I wanted at a reduced price - double win  Smiley

I believe in the future promise of bitcoin as a payment system but it's not going to grow unless it's used - stop trying to get rich and just use them!

I've had mine a few days and am thoroughly impressed - I've transferred funds to it and then sent some 'loose change' to a phone based wallet and it's slick, simple and secure.

A pat on the back to all involved and I really wish I'd ordered a metal one back when I had the chance.

steveme,

Thanks for writing the Guide! It has all the necessary info, and I was able to set up at least a couple of boards following it. The bounty of 20BTC is sent to the address you provided.

Just for reference, Quick-start Guide is located at: http://btc.steveme.mailforce.net/CM1%20quickstart%20guide.html

I wonder if Enterpoint is interested in adding this Guide to their documentation package - it seems a good place to start for new CM1 users.

bounty received - thanks!

the guide is now on the bitcoin wiki at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/CM1Quickstart

Are the dipswitch settings correct on the bitstream upgrade section? 'sw6 dip2 off' is contrary to this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=94317.msg1073047#msg1073047 which shows 'sw6 dip1 off'

It looks correct as per the settings here for the 1.5 controller:

http://www.enterpoint.co.uk/cairnsmore/cairnsmore1_support_materials.html

'3' (a.k.a SW1-3) is programming enabled, '6'  (a.k.a SW6-2) is SPI programming enabled

I'm referring to the section for upgrading the bitstream though, not updating the controller, is the SPI switch still relevant at this point in the procedure?
And is SW6-1 baud rate? because I'm getting better results with that set to 'off' or 115200 for mining.

The guide is excellent btw Smiley

Yes, you're right. I got those transposed somehow.

I've corrected them to leave SW6-1 off (115200 baud) all the time (there's no reason to change it when flashing)
For controller programming, setting SW1-3 & SW6-2 off is only necessary when reflashing the controller post 1.3 so that's a good catch-all
I've corrected the FPGA programming settings as per Lethos's diagram

Well spotted, cheers for that Smiley - I'm not in a position to do a full dummy run of this as I've got a single board happily hashing away and don't want to interrupt it....

I've posted CM1 quickstart guide draft 2 at the same URL:

http://btc.steveme.mailforce.net/CM1%20quickstart%20guide.html

If there's anything you'd like me to add or any errors to fix please let me know.

Once it's finalized I'll post it on the bitcoin.it wiki (hopefuly)

Thanks for that. I'll get another draft up tonight with some tidying up and some clearer examples.

Code:
-G " -S
Remove the accidental quote in the cgminer line

Also note that I didn't create a 2.7.5a coz in the 2.7.5 release there is:
 cgminer-2.7.5-win32/cgminer-fpgaonly.exe
... so ckolivas has already put the equivalent of my 2.7.5a in the cgminer windows binary file (from now on)

The reason this file exists (as you probably know but should also mention in the script) is that the default cgminer.exe file requires the ATI or nVidia OpenCL driver/SDK installed on windows or it won't run.

Also note that at the moment, ckolilvas is away and his download web site isn't working.
I have copied his windows and linux 2.7.5 binary archive files to my git download:
 https://github.com/kanoi/cgminer/downloads
This windows one on my download page:
 cgminer-2.7.5-win32.7z — cgminer2.7.5 ckolivas release file: windows 32bit (mingw)

It's been fixed Smiley

Guys,

I've played a bit with CM1 back in July, but I'm not up to date with the latest best practices and not familiar with MPBM. Now I need to catch up, but trying to extract meaningful info from 110+ pages of this thread is driving me crazy.

I'm willing to announce a bounty of 20 BTC for a Quick-start Guide To Mining with CM1. Let's limit it to Windows for now. This guide should cover all the steps necessary to go from an unpacked box of CM1 board(s) to a fully configured rig that is happily hashing using current best practices. Yes, this should include setting up MPBM and Python environment for it.

The bounty will go to the first one who writes such Guide before September, 20th. It will be paid as soon as I'm able to successfully configure my boards following the proposed steps. Going forward, such Quick-start Guide will be very helpful for people new to CM1, so I invite others to increase the bounty if they are so inclined.

Could you give this a proof read :

Or if anyone is interested in additions after 2.7.5 Smiley

The master branch in my git has a rather large number of commits I've worked on in the last 24 hours (and a couple before that)
The list is: debug control in the API, generic HW error handling for all devices except ztex, Diff1 information, BFL identify via a led flash, BFL throttle counter in 'notify' and a few other bit and pieces.

The pull request is here: https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer/pull/310 that shows them all.
That is simply my master branch - and each change I've done I keep adding to that pull request.

Anyone interested in any of those additions feel free to compile my master and let me know if you have any problems.
I haven't changed the ztex code coz I don't have any ztex hardware and the original code does some weird shit dealing with HW errors - if someone has a ztex and has time to visit IRC I could add some changes in another branch and get them to test it also.

Thanks for anyone who can test this.

Edit: of course this is what I am running on my 2 rigs - BFL, and ICA+GPU

I built it last night on 32bit Ubuntu 12.04. It's been running for 8hrs and is showing a modest amount of HW errors for my CM1 board.

Looks good Smiley
