Hi there,
There is a novella by my personal favorite author, Vernor Vinge, called The Ungoverned and I think the libertarians here would enjoy reading it. Later on, The Peace War expands on such ideas. Has anyone read those? I would be interested to hear any comments on how viable the system, presented in the books is, according to you. One of my major beefs with Vinge's libertarian society is that he automatically assumes that it would breed innovation in technology which would surpass that of the nation states with their top-down organized labs and factories.

I agree, after what happened to Liberty Reserve, mtgox has to be careful. A good step in the right direction for me. If someone wants to buy bitcoin on the downlow there's always more marginal exchanges and shady back alleys with wifi access from a nearby restaurant

Hi,
I have searched the forums and haven't found a satisfactory discussion, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Question:How do banks get more coins to pay interest rates if no new money is produced?
Further explanation: Let's say we have 21M bitcoins and a free-market economy based on them. Everyone has some of those bitcoins and are exchanging them with each other for services and goods. Now, if I am a bank, how do I get more money to pay my lenders? I understand that the things you can buy with your coins grows overtime, but how do you get more money itself? If everyone lends to everyone (like kind of what happens today), then we would want the number of coins to grow, or someone would not be able to get enough to pay back, despite being able to purchase more stuff (his intrinsic wealth growing). On a further note, even a 1% interest would be actually compounded by the deflationary trend, making it quite lucrative. Is it possible that negative or zero interest would be lucrative (just to keep your money safe?)
Perhaps my questions are simplistic, but then again so is my knowledge in economics.
Thanks for reading

PIZZA just makes me think of Portugal actually. I'm not sure if they make nice pizza there. Probably do. It's really hard to get pizza entirely wrong. I've tried.

... here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bir_TawilI mean, de jure you could do it, just go there, stake it out and you can have your own claimed piece of land. Where you'd get the water is a bit of an important question though. And, of course, Sudan and Egypt might change their minds once they see someone to govern Do you think someone with lots of cash could pull it off?

The news said the asteroid headed our way was a mass of half a football field. So something weird is going on in space.
I always thought football fields had areas, not mass. So if you meant that, totally agree, someone is space is seriously trolling us.

Remember Aaron Swartz?
Hah, okay, when I pirate 4 million papers from JSTOR and crash their servers, call the feds. Pity for Mr. Swartz though, it's a shame to see such a brilliant mind gone.

It's also illegal as all hell, but I'm sure no one cares.
Depends on your jurisdiction, doesn't it? dont university libraries already give you access to thousands of journals?
Yes, but I kind of hate this idea that to do science you have to be a member of a university. What happened to independent scientists like Tesla? I'm sure there are really smart people out there who don't have the privilege to be in a university setting. Does that mean that they should be excluded from the exchange of scientific knowledge? Besides, the current journals model is quite greedy - scientific journals do not pay for peer reviews and do not pay the authors of the papers. They obtain their profits simply because they have a monopoly on publishing. If you are a scientist, you have to sign away a large part of your rights on your paper just so you can get it into a high-impact journal. That's sad and slowly changing with the advent of open-source journals but old and bad habits tend to be hard to forget. I think one of the most beautiful things about the Internet is the potential to share knowledge with anyone in the world, no matter of their nationality, political leanings or economic background. This is partly why I'm offering this.

I think that number 42 tattooed on his arm is significant, for I've seen it mentioned on this forum many a times.
The number tattooed is 12, for D12 his rap group.

If the majority of people decided that slavery was OK again, would that make it OK to enslave the minority they picked? Why does a government founded on a logical fallacy seem like a good idea to you? You have constitution, safeguarding basic rights. You could possibly try and change the constitution, but for that you need an overwhelming majority, which just doesn't happen in a democracy. Even landslide victories are like 60%. Check the exceptions on the wikipedia page you linked to. Income redistribution falls withing the lines of social convention and safety, therefore the fallacy does not apply here. The constitution was in effect when slavery was happening. Myrkul you have failed to address the point that was made. You sure that was me? It looks more like miln40 failed to address the point. Slavery was not only not abolished by the constitution, it was written into it. So much for "basic rights." Check the other names for the fallacy. "Democracy" is included in the list. Yeah, I also think he meant me =D . Slavery was made illegal with the 13th amendment, I believe. So the constitution was modified after the majority of people decided to oppose slavery. Well, there was also this civil war, but it might have been pure coincidence.

I would offer the service to read a book and then write a report/summary on it. Sorry for butting in your thread on9isrock, it just inspired me. I read a book a week anyway, might as well make something out of it. Prospective customers, PM me if you want to discuss details. Or PM on9isrock, it was his idea in the first place!
