1  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Debate: Mutually Assured Destruction is the only solution to world peace. on: September 22, 2012, 03:10:24 AM
There are a few problems with this.

The first problem is that there are too many people who think they have god on their side. They don't care about dying, because they think there is something waiting for them beyond death. And they don't care about the carnage, because any atrocity can be justified by calling it the will of god.

The second problem is that some people just want to watch the world burn and some people just want humans to stop existing. The church of Euthanasia for example.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Euthanasia. There are many other extremists who hold a similar position.

The problem is that as the rate of technological progress increases and information becomes more available, it becomes easier and easier for a few wackjobs to seriously threaten the human population using various means such as desinger virus or nuclear power. There are probably a lot of private labs in world who have the materials and personnel necessary to design a virus that could serious threaten the human population.

I don't think such weapons make humanity safer. The threat of total extinction is increased because of them. They might encourage peace but they raise the stakes to such an extent their benefit is not worth the risk that they introduce.

If they just have the wallet but no idea what your password is, then it is incredibly unlikely that they would be able to decrypt it. You still have to worry about them getting your password due to malware or social engineering.

It makes sense to have such restrictions but it's really annoying and doesn't seem to be keeping the riff raff out. Seems like there are a few crackpots with hundreds of posts on this forum.

With all the problems bitcoin exchanges have been having I think I will only be trusting Mt. Gox because yeah they've been hacked but they paid back their customers. Anyone can open up an exchange because there's no regulation. It doesn't make sense to trust a new exchange. This has been proven over and over.

I heard about silkroad on reddit, started looking into it because it sounded interesting, and then I started reading into bitcoin. I'm interested in speculation and eager to see whether or not the bitcoin will be successful.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wht use bitcoins instead if USD or another currency? on: September 16, 2012, 02:54:26 PM
With Bitcoin, you can securely transfer money to anyone, anywhere in the world, anytime, day or night, even on weekends and holidays, have the funds "clear" in about 10 minutes on average, and all this for less than a penny in fees. No other means of transferring money even comes close.

I think this benefit is currently overshadowed by the problems that 1. It costs too much to convert to and from fiat currency, and 2. The bitcoin itself is too volatile in it's exchange rate. But if the currency ever stabilizes and is widely adopted, then fees will lower, and there will be less of a need to convert it to other currencies so a person could just keep so much of their net worth in bitcoins because it's simply economically advantagous and convenient.
