1  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mtgox system emailing everyone ? on: March 13, 2017, 05:44:47 PM
Did you all get an email today just a minute ago saying someone logged into your mtgox account on the recovery site?

Yes I did. Weird, considering I use a high entropy password there that isn't shared anywhere else. Went ahead and changed it anyway.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AMP - The Currency That Powers Your Attention On Synereo on: August 25, 2015, 07:47:16 AM
I couldn't even get through the docker synereo install https://github.com/synereo/dockerfiles

I've never heard anything about rabbitMQ, mongoDB or scala. Could you do me a favor and explain what languages are used in synereo and what you can do with each language?

Is there one language that an app would communicate with to use all of the abilities of synereo?

Docker is a container framework to get all the services running easily on your machine regardless of your host environment. Granted, you will need some development background (or motivation to learn a bit) to get it all setup.

As we've previously written in our blog posts, there are many ways to interface with a Synereo node once it's up and running.

If you feel like helping out in testing the docker install and perhaps even helping the development, please contact me or @leithaus on slack!

Went briefly  through the WP as it was too sophisticated for my understanding....

The whitepaper only formalizes all our ideas. Did you take a look at the Learn More page? http://synereo.com/learn-more/ It's a good introduction to most of our core ideas, and also points to relevant blog posts, which are easy to digest. I'd be happy to answer any further specific questions you may have.

Still didn't understand how the decentralization is kept while one entity holds and control the infrastructure....same problem as with VDO

Synereo doesn't control the infrastructure any more than the bitcoin devs control the bitcoin infrastructure. We propose a decentralized system with open protocols where everyone has full control and anyone can participate - development processes included. Is there any specific centralized aspect you see in our plans?

We know some of you have been asking, so here's short update on the AMP generation -

We're hard at work generating the initial tokens together with the awesome team at Omni. We're taking extra steps to secure the process in ways that no other coin provides, and we expect to finalize the process over the next few days. Here's what Craig Sellars, our partner at Omni, has to say on the process:

Quote
The Synereo crowdsale was architected by the Synereo and Omni teams to be the most secure crowdsale performed on the Bitcoin blockchain to date.  Every element of the process, from the purchase address receiving BTC, to the designated operational wallets, the issuing address for AMPs and the distribution of purchased tokens leverages the multi-signature capability of Bitcoin.  The parties responsible for each step include Synereo personnel as well as external verifiers, each holding keys.  This demonstrates to purchasers and future users of the Synereo platform that the commitments made by Synereo are fulfilled and verified by a third-party for each next step in the process.  I hope this level of diligence is repeated (and even improved!) in the future by others looking to provide participants with such a high level of confidence.

I think once they can release a platform, they will have MUCH better luck on the second round.

We actually have a working prototype, which we'll be able to talk more about in a few days. Stay tuned.

If there is no censorship in the system how can you deal with illegal content? Copyright issues or even worse. I am not obsessed with legality. But the governments are.

Content issues are double-edged sword. On one hand, since the technology is truly P2P, illegal/offensive content will always be around and cannot be censored by any central entity. On the other hand, as a technology that people use we cannot afford to leave our users to fend for themselves. There is a delicate line to walk here and we do not claim to have all the answers a priori. What we do have are some ideas for different mechanisms where communities and individuals can better control the content in the network around them. For example, users can block offenders within their community and recommend such actions to their peers. Another interesting model is that of community arbitration, akin to a tribunal system, where communities can employ a semi-hierarchical process to weed out spam, harassment and hate speech.

Eventually, many of the content problems are social problems at their core. As even the centralized networks today have shown, managing illegal and offensive content is not always a problem of having the right technical tools. Decentralizing social networks underscores these issues, but also introduces a whole new set of tools for users which enable much higher levels of control over their content, and that of their peers. Expect us to be sharing more these ideas in the near future as our work on the network progresses.

We've just launched the Synereo Discussion forums at https://discuss.synereo.com/

Feel free to engage us there with any question you may have as we publish our whitepaper, and approach the much expected crowdsale. We'll still be available on this thread, but we'd rather structure all the relevant content on our discussion forums.

See you on Discuss Synereo!

What are the differences between Synereo and Reveal ?

Reveal is a centralized social network. While it does compensate users with monetary reward, it lacks full control over the content the user provides to the net. Content distribution is still at the whim of the operator.

Synereo is a being built from the ground up to be completely decentralized, giving each user full control over her data, where the data flows through the network in full transparency. With Synereo, you are not sold to algorithms, rather, you deploy them and let them act on your behalf and in your interest.

I would be very interested in which tehcnology/language you will use and which frameworks you consider.
I am working on bitsquare.io and we use Java with TomP2P as DHT/messageing framework.
Would be good to exchange experience if we have something in common... (beside the logo and color ;-))

Well, we're still evaluating our requirements so no choice of technology/framework has been made yet.
Right now we're looking into everything, from basic DHT/gossip stuff, to distributed storage clusters, as well as some existing solutions built on top of these technologies.
As for the logo issue, we are aware of the similarities and are looking into it, assume no bad faith Smiley

Just popping up to say thanks to Dor for the kind intro, and to invite anyone who wishes to discuss our technology to chat.

I'm available here obviously, as well as on twitter @yuvadm, and by email at yuval (at) synereo (dot) com.
11  Economy / Speculation / Mt. Gox arbitrage doesn't jive on: February 10, 2014, 07:44:26 PM
First, Mt. Gox positive arbitrage was explained by illiquidity in moving cash out of Gox.
Now, Mt. Gox arbitrage is negative when it's clear funds have disappeared in the void.

DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Was gox playing the market all along, keeping a high arbitrage (selling high) to themselves while cashing out on other exchanges?

Look at the top bar - it's a trade on localBTC

Of course someone could've traded locally at $500, even if that's a pretty hefty premium.
14  Economy / Speculation / Re: Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust on Bloomberg on: October 23, 2013, 10:15:00 PM
Someone please explain this to me, because I clearly don't get it -

How can an actual pump-and-dump scheme be possible on BTC?

If a trust is pumped with $$$ therefore pumping up BTC, what happens when everyone sells? Fund still has same amount of $$$, so only early jumpers actually get to see their gains, and rest are left dry.

Why would _anyone_ try to pump-and-dump given then when the dump arrives, there's a high chance of the money simply vanishing into thin air?
15  Economy / Speculation / Re: This is a bubble, short it! on: August 05, 2013, 12:37:34 PM
Someone please ELI5 this to me -

Increasing difficulty => less ROI per mining hardware
Less ROI => less profitability of running mining hardware

Profitability will only remain same if price goes up. Otherwise, people shut down rigs.
Or keep mining due to speculation that one day prices will make it worthwhile.
But exponential growth will never keep up.

What's expected here?

All this China hype is nothing more than a trap before we continue sliding further down.

it's best we respect Satoshi's wish to remain anonymous, being that anonymity is one of the protocol's notable features.

I see what you did there...
