I am trying to find more information to gain a better understand of Bitcoin Mining, more specifically an option of cgMiner.

The question I have is regarding the cgMiner options listed below and how they work or what they effects when solo mining.

--scan-time|-s <arg> Upper bound on time spent scanning current work, in seconds (default: 60)
--expiry|-E <arg>   Upper bound on how many seconds after getting work we consider a share from it stale (default: 120)

I am also trying to get a better understanding on how work is handed out when solo mining vs. pooled mining.
