Would anyone care to recommend a PSU suitable for powering just one bASIC? Should I just look for the gold/silver efficiency stickers on a 400-600w model?

for board power we included the option of using either 4 pin molex or your common 12v dc barrel jack connector like what they use on the bitforce single.

As we do not provide power supplies for these units we wanted to make sure everyone would be able to power their units in the way that they wished.

My personal opinion would be to

buy something like this:

https://www.bitcoinasic.net/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=54

which is a highly efficient and top notch PSU - as far as I know the only PSU certified to platinum efficiency status is Seasonic.

I personally use these on my fpga rigs - one of these 1000 watt babies will easily power 8-10 54Gh/s bASICS

Now I owe a huge apology to my customers who are waiting on email responses. I have some family issues I have to deal with that are going to keep me away until monday. but I give you my word that I will have all outstanding emails inquiries addressed by monday morning at the latest.

For anyone else that needs me you are certainly welcome to call me at any time (315) 514-0269

as many of my friends here can attest to - if you do not get me on the first try its likely I am with another customer or otherwise cannot come to the phone so PLEASE keep trying
if your calling from the USA and leave a message I will almost ALWAYS return the call. If you are calling international please keep calling - I will answer eventually I promise!

Take care my friends and hang in there- things are moving forward and looking really good and so far we are looking like we can keep that tentative ship schedule

to DiabloD3 and all the other excellent staff members here I highly appreciate your level handed justice, not many of us remember what this forum once was, but I for one do. It was my favorite, most intelligent and open minded and polite place on the internet,  however attempts at its destruction are being made daily by agenda driven trolls with no lives have made it their duty to disrupt this thread and this forum in general I applaud the staff members for doing such a good job, you have my continued support and if there is anything else I can do for you please do not hesitate to ask.

Lets keep this thread on subject gentleman please. If obvious trolls pop up and try to post off topic and de-rail again please dont hesitate to report to moderator, but otherwise I want to see my supporters posting on topic and I am sure you will. Remember we are the good guys here and we need to act like it  Smiley

anyways I am off - I will be around as much as I can be but email's pm's wont be answered until monday - if you need a question answered and it cant wait until monday do it the old fashion way and give me a call

take care my brothers
Tom

PSUs and molex connectors are great, i'm sure, but I for one do not have a pc to use with my bASIC. I will be using a RPi to host it, so molex  and PSUs are out of the question.

I suppose I will wait for you to specify exactly what kind of dc adapter we will need.

bASIC product details do not mention power supply, only DC barrel connector in the specs.
So do i need to acquire separately a power supply and connector?

Or is there even the barrel connector supplied  so i can easily hook it up to any power supply providing sufficient 12VDC?

It would be really nice if bASIC is just as finished product as BFLs are, ie. everything supplied in a case + fans, just plug it in.

I would like too to know if the  barrel connector is supplied with the device or should I buy it, in that case any suggestion?

Best

I'd like to get an answer for this too :/
Guys, bASIC boards will have both Molex and barrel connectors on-board and you are free to use any one.

What does a "barrel connector on-board" mean. Does that mean that the bASIC will have a female dc barrel connection available and we will need to provide our own dc adapter? Or does that mean that the bASIC will actually include the proper dc adapter? A couple pages back it was discussed how not all dc adapters are the same.

From what I understand, BFL's last announced shipping date/goal is around the same time as Tom's? Are we just assuming that they won't make it? I gather that they have a reputation for not meeting shipping date goals.

A buddy of mine informed me that dc adapters aren't standardized, etc etc, so they could potentially mess up the bASIC.

Cablepair, will you be including an appropriately matched dc adapter? If not, can you provide a link to purchase one which is guaranteed to work appropriately with the bASIC?

yes dc adapters come in all shapes and sizes - the barrel jack connector we are using is about the most common size available - as far as I know you just need 12v but I will make sure the engineers give me exact specs of the ideal adapter - but when in doubt use molex.

If you run out of molex connectors on your PSU you can always use the sata to molex adapter we sell on our website.

Thanks for your reply. I'd use molex but I'm going to try to host the bASIC on an RPI, so I won't have a PSU nearby.
My friend was referring to "wrong polarity / wrong voltage / wrong whatever else" as being a potential danger, rather than the actual physical connector shape/size.

I believe that for powering the device, your can use either a wallwart-style power adapter plugged into the wall with its barrel connector, or you can use a 4-pin Molex connector from a PC power supply, like were used to power the older PATA drives.

For communication with the device, you must use USB.  You cannot power the device using USB.

do you reckon the power adapter will be included? i'm not sure where i could pick one up around here.

So just to be clear, the bASIC will:

a) be able to connect directly to wall socket for power via included "dc barrel connector"
b) connect to hosting device via included micro/mini USB

Correct? Am I missing any other connections the device will require?

While I like the idea of everyone trying that as it will keep network hashrate down, you might want to reconsider hooking the barrel jack directly to the wall.

Whatever, this thing

I'd like to request to be added to the whitelist. I'm relatively new to the bitcoin community, but I've been watching from afar for some time. I ordered a bASIC recently so I'd like to be able to discuss pertinent information on its proper thread. Same thing goes for other hardware, i.e. RPI; I'd like to be able to discuss it in a suitable location where I'd actually get replies, rather than posting here and hoping for the best.

Cheers.

Still hoarding it in my wallet Tongue. I look at its blockchain every once in a while for amusement, trying to figure out how the magic happens.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A new notation for Bitcoin? on: October 31, 2012, 02:11:18 PM
Certainly an interesting idea. Only quarrel I have with it is that it seems to add another level of abstraction to the mess. As previously stated most people would probably be more inclined to simply counting decimals Tongue

Thank you for the analogy. very helpful

From what I understand the already-mediocre hash rate of GPUs is even worse on CPU, to the point where it cannot be possibly be profitable.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Cheapest device to host an ASIC / Raspberry Pi + ASIC on: October 25, 2012, 01:44:44 PM
I pre-ordered a 54 GH/s bASIC, along with a Raspberry Pi Model B Rev 2.0 to host it. Started reading around and it seems that the RPi might have some issues with USB devices. As far as I can tell these issues were being reported by rev 1.0 users or Model A users, as rev 2.0 was released pretty recently.

I don't have the RPi on hand (or the bASIC, obviously), but it should be arriving soon. Without having the ASIC, can anyone suggest a way to test for compatibility? It seems that the possible USB issue also manifests itself in mundane tasks such as typing and clicking, so I may play around with that and see if anything goes wrong.

I also read that the USB issues might be due to insufficient power for the RPi, so today I'm going to try to pick up a 12V microUSB charger (vs. the minimum recommended 5V).

But suppose the RPi fails regardless, would anyone care to suggest what the next course of action may be? My two thoughts are to either build a dirt-cheap PC with minimum specs, or to try and hunt down a cheap netbook. Either way, the power consumption will be more than that of the RPi, but what can you do.
