Shouldn't the Ethereum algo block or limit high intensity users so that no 1 big poweruser can take over?
Or am I wrong?
2  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would be a good asic miner to start with? on: January 05, 2016, 08:55:49 PM
S7 would be the only choice IMHO, however, even in that case I still stand behind my words that home mining is about to end soon.

Mining diff goes up 20-30% per month these days and there s hardly any space these days to make money from mining.

This is why I always choose a few PoS coins to stake where I can get all transparency I need and they ve been making me money for over a year now, DMD, FLY and CLAM especially.

TRANSPARENCY IS THE KEY, do not let your greed controls you.

If anyone needs any help about PoS, let me know, always glad to help. No referral links, no sales from my side, NOTHING. I help people cause I m a nice guy.

PoS is Proof of Share, right?

So, I guess the best choice would be something like the S7?
If the S5 does 0.5w/GH and the S7 is close to 0.25W/GH
By the time I get something back from the S5 I wouldn't be able to sell them any way, right?

Those sites are very interesting but I'm located in Europe. Not sure how shipping will be...

Actually I recently got burned buying 2 antminer s5 of ebay... both died within 12h... (don't know if there is something I can do about that)
This is why I'm a bit scared of "used gear"

I am looking at the S7 because they are popular and I guess you can resell them easily but then I about problems and failing boards again... (kinda gave me bad chill's)

Now, I'm not lazy and I know money doesn't come falling out of tree while sitting pretty.
But I want to believe with the right strategy there should be a way to grow into something decent.
(as long as you don't get scammed ofc...)

If you buy Today your only Choices are Bitmain S7 or Avalon6. Choice is close with supporters of both, so you would need to read the Forum and make your own decision.

As to future releases of 14 /16nm based Miners, then you are in the land of the unknown, with difficulty increases working against you and the Halving getting ever closer. BW.com will probably be one of the first in the next Month or so, could be keenly priced? Bitfury may release something or they might not, if they do will probably be the most efficient but likely to be pricey?

On picking I would ask OP does he have 220/240?  That is decent factor in which one is best for his situation.  Also is noise a issue?  this also is big on picking.

Also OP what is your electricity?   That can help us see if ROI is even possible.
My apologies... I didn't know OP referred to me...

I do have 220/240v and noise is not the biggest issue. I would have a dedicated room.

Electric is not that cheap I guess... 8ct/kWh.

So... if I understand correctly... you all think the world of bitcoin is too far evolved for normal people to step in anymore?

Not at all. Anyone can step into Bitcoin. However to start mining one would need to invest a lot of money and it would be a huge risk to take. The best way to get involved at this point is to buy some BTC and hold it for a while. Either than that you can invest less in cloud mining but you will probably not reach ROI

I tried some cloud mining next to my little home mining and honestly the numbers didn't seem to move in the same way... I'm not sure how much fate I have left in that...

Hello guys...

I've been looking into the asic world and since I started got lucky a few times and got burned too...

I would like to invest in an asic miner and buy it brand new (don't want to risk getting used gear that craps out on me)
But what manufacturer delivers and what should I be looking for?

I've been reading about the new 16nm chips that should be released this year...
So obviously I would be dumb to spend too much money on a 28nm asic miner...

Any advice would be welcome,
Thanks!
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would an S3 control board be able to work with S5 Hash boards? on: January 02, 2016, 10:57:21 PM
Yeah... guess I got unlucky... didn't even have them working for 24h...

So... what are your experiences with Bitmain tech and ordering from them?
Can I trust them? Or is it the same russian roulette game?

If you order from them, the thing should be under warranty. So if there is something wrong, it should be fixable, although you would have to ship them back the defective thing at your expenses.

What is the PSU you used that burned a bunch of S5 cards?

I received them with 2 Corsair CX850M
The 12v rail has 70amp over 840w

I connected all 4 power connectors and followed Dogies' "how to"

My guess is something was wrong with them from the start... maybe they were poorly stored somewhere or so...
I don't see how I could burn 2 complete s5's hashboards by just setting them up to my pool and letting them go at standard frequency using the PSU's that came with them in 48h...?
I kept a close eye on the temp because I just got them, so I know nothing seemed to be reading out of the ordinary...

It's really sad... this gives me a bad after taste of ebay...

Yeah... never mind... the 2nd just crapped out on me... like: right now...
are those S5's poorly built maybe?
or did I get ripped off?

Guess that teaches me for not buying the newest model straight from the manufacturer...

Now... honestly... how are my chances to get a good model and not have to wait for ever if I were to order a new one from bitmain?

(this feels like the crying game... Cry)
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would an S3 control board be able to work with S5 Hash boards? on: January 01, 2016, 08:37:36 PM
I did try the psu that runs my other S5 and still it gives the same weirdness...

When I hook up 1 hash board at a time it shows up completely fine in the "asic status" tab but it still doesn't hash...
That's why I suspected the control board to be bad because from what I read the device should mine with only 1 hash board connected... right?
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Would an S3 control board be able to work with S5 Hash boards? on: January 01, 2016, 08:25:56 PM
Cool! that is great news...!

Is there anything else I should be aware of or would there be any tips or advice on how to connect and set them up?

I would have thought to lay 2 S5's on the side with the top pointed towards each other so I can connect the 2 hash boards on the control board of the working one.

I suppose I need to turn on the power of the hash boards before turning on the S5's with the control board?

Would the rest then be plug-n-play?

and one last question...
(I should have opened with that, to make sure)
when I tested my hash boards one by one on my original control board they seemed perfectly normal.
it's only when both were on that specific board that I read errors.
never the unit wanted to hash anymore.
every time I tried to change something I got different readings:
once it was the 1st board failing
then the other
then both working but no hashing
then all in ------
So I ended up assuming it has to be the control unit...
Think I could be wrong?
Would there be other ways to test the hash boards without ridking my good S5 I have left?

Thank you very much!

And I'm sorry for having double posted...

I didn't mean to spam... I just was afraid no one was gonna read the follow up question I asked...

Thanks again.
And happy 2016!!!
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Possible to connect 4 hash boards on the S5 control unit? on: January 01, 2016, 10:59:29 AM
Would it maybe be possible to hook up 4 hash boards on 1 S5 control board?
There are 4 slots...

(Just trying some out of the box thinking coz it seems so sad to have 1 S5 not working anymore...)

16  Bitcoin / Hardware / Would an S3 control board be able to work with S5 Hash boards? on: January 01, 2016, 09:39:02 AM
Hi guys, and happy new year btw...!

I have an S5 that is not working any more and an S3 that has 1 faulty asic chip already...

I was wondering if there would be a way to use the controlboard of the S3 and in some way make it work with the S5?
Would it be possible to flash the S5 OS on it or would it be able to read a board with more asic's on?

Anyone ever tried?

Kind regards!
17  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S5 No hashing, no red lights on the hash board on: December 31, 2015, 09:47:49 AM
I bought the unit used... so it might have been overclocked, I wouldn't know.

do you think it would be the hash boards or the control board?

the strange thing was that it worked for 12h...
it was not running at a straight speed though.

Do you think I could get replacement parts from bitmain tech?
18  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S5 No hashing, no red lights on the hash board on: December 31, 2015, 01:31:31 AM
I had a feeling that there was some power loss on the unit...
Could those little power discharges have broken it?

The funny thing is I keep getting different readings in tab: miner status

I tried the diagnostic that is recommended by the bitmain web-site.
Disconnecting 1 hash board to see which board is broken. But I don't know what to look for?

When 1 board is connected

When both are connected

When only 1 board is connected all 30 asic are visible. But no hashing. For both boards.
Now sometimes when I reboot it's the 1st chain that is missing asics, then again the 2nd...
I tried dialing the frequency down and all of a sudden all 2x 30 asic are visible again (but still no hashing) and then they are gone again.

Last I tried going back to the original firmware and got scared as it wouldn't do anything any more... but after a reboot I could still access the menu

Could it be the control board?
How could I know? I expected when the control board goes nothing would start anymore...

19  Bitcoin / Hardware / Antminer S5 No hashing, no red lights on the hash board on: December 30, 2015, 04:54:21 PM
My antminer S5 was working for not even 12h when he stopped working...

In status I saw:
asic chain 1: 30
asic chain 2: 03

After a few tries of checking the cables and switching power supplies I experimented with new firmwares.
The 2015-04-15 got me my 2x 30 asic back... but still no red light on the board nor does it hash....

Now I noticed something weird on the power connexion for the controller board. Looks like 2 of the 4 connexions are touching... I don't supposed that's normal, right?
