1  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What hardware goes with a 5870? on: February 24, 2013, 07:34:16 PM
ASICs, own risk, stupid to mine on GPUs, yadda yadda and so on. Anyway...

What you're looking for is the cheapest mobo that can take two of the cards. I think they use pcie, so go with that. I'm fairly certain that cards designed to run on pcie 2 can run on 1 as well, and the decreased bandwidth doesn't matter too much to you. once you've picked out your mobo, grab a gig or two that fits into it, and the cheapest processor that fits into the socket on the mobo. That's... basically it. You'll want a power supply that can supply enough power for everything (there's a power supply calculator online), and  a tower to house this all in. Try http://pcpartpicker.com/ to see what can be bought new, and then look for old computers with compatible ports that people are getting rid of or throwing away. Reusing old hardware will make your power usage higher, but initial investment cheaper.

The sad truth is that nVidia cards are just not very good at mining because of their architecture, and AMD cards are. Take a look here. http://m.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-660-ti-benchmark-review,3279-12.html

And don't forget to check your power consumption and electricity costs if you're doing this for profit.

Another boring day in the newbie forums? Nice essay, I suppose, although it doesn't take into account all the problems that could arise still. Hell, the router that I have is running hardware 1.0c, which means that there this is the third version of this, and there were problems with the previous ones. And this is Netgear, which has been making this shit for years. Now we're expected to believe that some guys will get something that doesn't blow up on their first go? Perhaps, it's possible, with time and care and simulation you can be relatively certain...

But until I see a working ASIC hashing out at the promised speeds, I'm not convinced. It'll happen eventually, but will it happen soon?

Why would anyone waste their money on this garbage?

Why would anyone gamble in general?

Some people say that they do it to make money, and those people either misunderstand simple math and statistics, or choose to ignore it (much like some people mining BTC at the moment on inefficient cards and hoping to make a profit, without taking into account electricity costs and the like).

The real reason is (probably) that they're willing to pay 3% or whatever for the entertainment and exhilaration that the gambling provides them with.

I wish I'd known about the 4 hour restriction last month when I started browsing the forums!  I only found out when I had something interesting to post.

hah, I'm in the same boat. Wish I had been logged in all that time.
