Just to inform everybody , Big Vern found nothing wrong with pwc and powercoin is back on trading on Cryptsy now.
Hard to believe you when all your last posts are pumping PWC. So it really was killed by a 51% attack apparently. |

Very simply it allows someone with 51% of the total network hashing power to send you coins, then essentially take them back later.

Who says it's not already being attacked? When was that last checkpoint? PWC was being 51%'d for two days and people were only made aware of it when the attacker posted it here. |

Challenging a newbie who claims to be attacking coins and taking them down DOES NOT constitute a challenge to anyone else.
That newbie has asked me to be part of his team, Does your challenge still stand? ~BCX~ I was responding to a supposedly "imminent" threat to the DGC community for no reason. Out of curiosity, what do you have to do with that BitcoinEXpress? Don't worry about BCX. He's cool and destroy any coin. Yup, BCX does what he says. You can love him or hate him for that, you can ban him but it doesn't take away the danger from low hashrate altcoins. DGC has one of the highest hashrates out of all the altcoins. Doesn't mean much when it's all in a couple pools though does it? Better spread the hash rate around a little more. |

Yes but your other computer on the LAN is connected to the network so it'll see you already spent your coins.
If disconnect both, in order to get a longer blockchain, you'll have to generate blocks; good luck with that.
BTC difficulty is currently 19,339,258.
You'd need to have 51% of the hashing power, hence why it's called the 51% attack.
You kinda left that step out.
At step 9, you indeed need to generate blocks faster than the real network ... That's why you need some horsepower and that's why it is "recommended" to launch a deny of service on the main pools to ease your chance to get a longer blockchain. I'm not an expert, but I suppose you don't really need 51% of the hashpower ... the more you have, the more likely you will generate a longer blockchain in a given timeframe. At 25% I suppose you can already be considered a threat At 25% you would have to be VERY lucky to be a threat. You don't want to have too much more than the network so as not to reflect any huge spike in network hash rate when you broadcast your blockchain. |

You're right - don't turn on the slave system until you've disconnected the internet. The client will sync with your main system. (just add connect=192.168.x.x to the config) There should be another step in between 8 and 9: Get 51% or more of the hashing power of the coin you want to attack. Otherwise the valid chain will generate blocks faster than you. That's usually the hard part since most of us don't have $100k+ to spend Edit: Sorry for not understanding your post since you left the MOST IMPORTANT STEP OUT. You can 51% Elacoin with about 3x7950. I know quite a few people with 10-20 MH/s each which could kill a good number of the alt-coins tomorrow. |

shhh dont taunt them, that will make them angrier. Instead of attacking coins, why dont they just spend the same time and effort supporting the coin they like by creating products/services and other interesting places to spend them? Because attacking coins is quick, brainless, and yields instant profit. It's certainly not brainless. You have to know what you're doing to attack a coin. or follow a tutorial  1. Sync client with network 2. Backup %appdata/coin_directory 3. Send coins to exchange and wait for 1 confirmation 4. Close client. Disconnect internet. 5. Overwrite %appdata/coin_directory with the backup 6. Launch client. 7. Create new receiving address. 8. Send all your coins to your new address 9. Wait for transaction to be confirmed and you have found more blocks than the real world network 10. Reconnect internet. Your coins are at the exchange, but still in your wallet as well. Oh, and you need another machine on your LAN running the client as well. (you need at least one connection to anyone to mine) /facepalm Your transaction is recorded onto the blockchain so when you overwrite with your previous file, you won't be able to spend them. Your client will see you already spent those coins and they'll disappear once your blockchain updates. You're wrong. You have the longer blockchain which doesn't contain the transaction to the exchange. Your blockchain gets accepted by the network. |

I openly invite you to try your best with DGC.  Ok. Want to sell PWC cheap! DGC coming soon. If you cannot do this. Then you are only good in 51% a coin with 4mh/s. lol Anyone with 3x 7950's right now can perform a 51% attack on Elacoin. Only 5x 7950's to kill Americancoin. This can be done by anyone. Any exchange would be crazy to accept the liability of supporting these and most other alt-coins while risking the assets of traders. |

what's the point dev just put in a checkpoint and the attack is worthless. all it will do is slow down the network for as long as they are attacking it. miners will come back after the attack is over. not sure how DGC will be "dead"?
Is the dev going to be adding checkpoints every 10 blocks? Because that's about all a 51% attack takes, and the truth is, it's really difficult to notice initially unless you're actually watching a live version of the blockchain. Since most alt-coins have either no blockchain explorer or a very poor one, I will not be surprised when we uncover that most of the alt-coins have already been attacked. The only way to somewhat protect yourself in this case would be to have 100 block confirmations on deposits to exchanges, and checkpoints every 50 blocks. Pools would only have to download a new client every few minutes.  |

WTF. Anyone wanna buy ~150k PWC cheap? as feathercoin proved, you can have a 51% attack and still come back. The attacker of FTC didn't accumulate almost 50% of all coins in existence during their attack though. This guy got ~540k PWC The burden of prove is on the attacker. I can fork the coin myself from the source and run it locally and build up a nice fat wallet to put in a screenshot. hell I can photoshop it Iran-style. I don't see the attack, show me the proof. Proof is in the blockchain. |
