I would suggest getting a voltmeter, you could be plugged into the same rails on your PSU and therefore attempting to draw too much voltage despite having the watt rating. (I'm not an electrical engineer though)

I've had a lot of issues with 1500 watt PSU's and have since switched to using multiple 800-1000 watt psu's.

Awesome, I'm glad we have another miner in here now! Good luck with your endeavors!

As an addendum to my PSU comment, I have found that sometimes PSU's do not turn on if they cables are not of a specific brand, so if you run into issues while paper-clipping, unplug cables that didn't come with that specific PSU first. I'm not sure why this occurs, but am currently looking into it.

I would second key00's remarks on not using an enclosed case. make a room in your house off limits for your child and put an open rig of some sort in there. These pump out 70C+ air, and in a confined space you'll never get them mining (ie they'll overheat and shut down before you submit any hashes that matter). If you have a garage or a drill, just build http://www.bitcointrading.com/forum/mining-hardware/guide-make-your-own-open-frame-rig/ out of wood. costs maybe $10, and all parts can be found at any hardware store.

I also wouldn't 'dangle' the cards, they need to be secured to something... Since you're interested in litecoin/dogecoin go to www.reddit.com/r/dogemining and follow one of their beginner guides.

I have 5 GPU's running on my H81, all out of powered risers on the 1x slots. I've been playing with the x16 slot on my other build, but for some reason i get some problems when i touch the x16 slot.

Question 1:
Would this be overkill in terms of wattage? Perhaps I can save $50 and go with two 1000w? And how should I connect everything up.. 4 cards on one psu and the system + 2 cards on the other?

My Answer:
I use 1000W on mobo and 3 GPU, power draw of ~850 watts, then 6 GPU on a 1250W psu. I would say stick to name brand, 1000W+, PSU's thats been my only issue so far. I cannot recommend the Corsair RM1000 enough, that thing is a beast, plus the cabling it comes with is amazing.

Question 2:
I've heard of people linking power supplies together so they get turned on at the same time, how do I do this and is this necessary? What do they mean by "do not mix" when doing this.

Answer:
http://aphnetworks.com/lounge/turn_on_psu_without_motherboard_the_paperclip_trick

Turn on the non-mobo connected PSU first, then turn on mobo. works flawlessly.

Question 3:
I have 6 USB powered risers.. some of the posts I've read from people make me nervous about this whole power concept. But my plan now is to connect the two molex on the motherboard up, as well as connect all six powered risers to each card. I guess I'm concerned about frying the motherboard or the cards.

Answer:
I have the two molex on mobo plugged in, as well as all my risers plugged in. Been running safely for ~3 weeks now.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 7xPCIe Mainboards that work with 7 video cards on: February 04, 2014, 09:14:47 PM
It might be more of a help to get the rest of the setup though. Many people are having issues geting 6x 290X working, where as 6x 7950 is easy. So its not so much a motherboard problem, as it is a software or BIOS ram problem.

Not sure if you noticed GKG, but no one has received their openrigs order. Not saying he's scamming, just that shipments from South Arica not only cost a lot, but take 2+ months... (longer than shipping EMS from China)

I made this out of wood for ~$5.00, so if you live near a lowes or home depot, you can just buy screws and 1x4's and you're set.

Does anyone have a PDF print out or link to a website that has the exact placement of the screwholes of the ATX mobo's? I had to take my mobo and use a sharpie before putting in the holes.

Since it has been ~1 week since fluffy said the first 450 orders have been shipped... Any pictures or reviews of what has arrived?
10  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Question about a collision statement on bitcoin wiki on: December 09, 2013, 07:48:16 PM
Hey guys,
Was just reading https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Technical_background_of_version_1_Bitcoin_addresses when I came across this part.
Quote
Since Bitcoin addresses are basically random numbers, it is possible, although extremely unlikely, for two people to independently generate the same address. This is called a collision. If this happens, then both the original owner of the address and the colliding owner could spend money sent to that address. It would not be possible for the colliding person to spend the original owner's entire wallet (or vice versa).
Now it is my understanding that a collision would mean 2 different ECDSA keys turning into the same public bitcoin address, and it would therefore make sense that the ECDSA key must be the same to have actually access the entire wallet. But this stands true only if there is indeed a collision right? If two users have the same ECDSA key, then both would have access to the entire wallet, and the following statement of
Quote
If you were to intentionally try to make a collision, it would currently take 2^107 times longer to generate a colliding Bitcoin address than to generate a block
as well as the previous statement regarding collisions (as none have been found in SHA-256 to my knowledge) would really only be put there for marketing, and not for actual securities sake.

go on coinbase

i wouldn't call it stable yet... mtgox is still lagging pretty badly. its api has a 400s delay right now. and trade sizes have dropped due to it, so we'll see what happens when the lag starts getting back into a manageable state.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CRASH! on: March 07, 2013, 01:28:23 AM
It needs to keep going down though to legitimately balance out the economy though. stopping in the 30s is only going to keep a bubble, albeit a smaller one.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CRASH! on: March 07, 2013, 01:07:47 AM
Yea, i'm trying to log into my mt gox account too and its timing out, I hope it hits $3 again.. haha. I sold all my btc yesterday at $42, so I'm kinda glad its getting back into a price that i can stomach.

The bitcoin is crashing right now! down $8.00 in no time at all... how low will it go this time?!
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What miner should I use? on: March 06, 2013, 03:10:39 AM
Thats right, and there are a lot of miners that use both CPU and GPU. Really, if you join a pool and stay mining 24/7 you might get some 'free' money. But in all likelihood the costs (ie electricity) will outweigh the benefits... So if you don't pay for anything, go for it, but if you pay the bills, stay away from it (unless you have fun watching your computer work)

Search Free BTC in the top right.

www.bitvisitor.com

is an example. they pay very little though, talking about even less than miners pay out. I used these fountains for a week and earned maybe 10 cents US

No, no. He is right. Pluto is indeed, no longer a planet. It is quite unfortunate.

Where do you trade USD for bitcoins, then to Silver/Gold?
Or do you mean through multiple exchanges?
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What's the best way to convert BTC to USD in the bank? on: March 05, 2013, 06:10:32 AM
I use www.coinbase.com as well. Although buying coins seems to take a lot longer than selling them. Roughly 6 business days to get coins into my account, but they'll take them from me quickly!
