• I cannot pay for my gasoline at any gas station in my town with a basic PayPal account, even if I have the funds already in the account.
• My local mom-and-pop carryout has a $10 minimum for all credit card transactions. Can't charge a pack of gum unless I buy $9.21 worth of other stuff I may not necessarily need on that trip.
• I cannot pay for my groceries with my silver, unless I'm willing to eat a 96% loss on an ASE by redeeming it for its $1 face value.
• I cannot order a pizza and pay with personal check, as virtually all local pizzarias no longer accept personal checks.

Despite all of these flaws and incompatibilities across payment networks I have to navigate everyday in my life, I've somehow managed to survive nearly 40 years!

Of course, I also don't throw tantrums when I have to *gasp* walk somewhere without coffee (the horror!!!!). But I guess that's just me.

The problem is BTC-e and BitStamp have their own books. Gox has the API (for whatever that's worth) for CNBC to get a direct real-time price that the market is moved by.

Can't wait til this stuff is scrolling on my TV screen and goes blank when Gox goes offline. They are in no way, shape, or form prepared for this.

The bubble, ponzi, and tulip comparisons that are frequently parroted just don't fit because bitcoin is a (presumably) non-expirable commodity.

It's a token for a transaction, so no matter what its value, as long as it has an agreed upon value between two parties at the time the transaction occurs, its useful. The censorship resistant, real time transfer of wealth around the globe will always have value.

I liken it more to fine art. It could be worth a lot less tomorrow than it is today, but the genie is out of the bottle, I doubt it can ever crash to extinction.

Just to play devil's advocate, assuming it did crash and the VC and ETF managers took their money and went home, we'd be right back to bitcoin being the official currency of Wikileaks, Tor and Silk Road, which have been getting months of free publicity. There's like a gazillion potheads out there who have just perked up with, 'I can buy drugs anonymously on the Internet?!?!?!'

That's right. Don't spend one cent on the bitcoin scam, instead send all your money to Chris Duane and he'll send you back some SBSS Freedom Girl rounds. Maybe. When he gets around to it.

Hate to treat my party to a round of drinks and be unaware the btc conversion rate crashed with a high-volume sell off on mt. gox while I was out.

I'm not hoarding or fuelled by greed, it's just that the things I buy with bitcoins only cost 0.157BTC today, so it's taking me a whole lot longer to float what I've got.  

franky1 just beat me to it. For nearly forty years I've somehow managed to function in a dollar economy despite the fact I'm handling pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters every single day. This satoshi naming issue is overblown. If people want to use it, they'll make an effort to figure it out. Of all the things in the Bitcoin universe, the decimal notation and naming is the least difficult to explain to a n00b.

If my wife can figure out the g/s/c conversion rate in World of Warcraft, she can figure out BTC when the time comes.
