Your computer is probably compromised. Not sure what you can do to get your money back.

Burn yourself a live CD (like ubuntu) and change your password from that. Then you'll probably want to backup your files (non executable only), reformat and reinstall your main OS. REFORMAT, DON'T JUST REINSTALL WINDOWS THAT MIGHT LEAVE FILES THAT COULD REINFECT YOU.
I'd recommend using a sandbox program for running downloaded files and your web browser. Sandboxie is my favorite and, last I checked, the most secure. It has a 30 day trail, but when it expires there's just a 5 sec nag screen and you still get full protection. There's also browser plugins that can help prevent you being hacked as well. Firefox with NoScript is a great start. Request Policy is another great one. Only allow sites you really trust, never allow things you just clicked on off of google. Also it's smart not to just google for porn or "free" downloads, find a few well established sites and stick to them.
3  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGminer, "dead" gpus on: April 27, 2013, 10:34:01 AM
Yeah that sounds like something you can RMA it for. Although the issue could be as simple as bad thermal paste/pad application at the factory. If your warranty allows you to remove the stock cooling it couldn't hurt to reapply thermal paste and give it a go, might save you some down time. Most decent aftermarket paste is way better then what they ship it with so you'd probably end up with better temps as well. If the card is already out of warranty you can pop it in the oven at 385 for 8-12 minutes to remelt and fix any failing solder.

What model/SKU number is your card? Should be on the box with the barcodes and partially printed on a label on the PCB. I have a 11197-03-40G. Sapphire makes quite a few 7970s variants.

It's the same as yours, yeah. But I don't understand why my default is 1025mV and yours is 1170 mV. Similarly my default memory speed is 1425 MHz and yours isn't, is it? These differences mean I can't quite relate it to the other experiences people are having.
I'm guessing you're getting that voltage reading from GPUZ? It always gives a lower reading then afterburner, I think it might be because it reads the voltage of several components individually and other software reads them before they are split. Not sure on that though, but my GUPz reading are always lower then afterburner.

My default core voltage was 1175 mV or 1.175 V. I don't think I mentioned the default memory clockspeed, it was the same as yours, 1425. I keep it underclocked 150 MHz less then my core clock. Any lower and the card becomes unstable. So at 1150 it's safe to clock the memory down to 1000.

The dual BIOS comes in handy if you want to flash a modified bios with an overclock as the default setting.

avalon stated they will be selling off mass orders of the chips.
I did not know that... It all makes sense now! That's why BFL is taking so long! XD
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Worst case scenario: gov/banking manipulation at the root of this "bubble" on: April 09, 2013, 07:24:38 AM
So governments would seek to destroy bitcoin by making it wildly successful?
Yeah, pretty much, then crash it. People lose tons of money and they run walls of negative media until decentralized currency is ingrained in the public's eye as worthless. If you grew up in america do you remember how they taught you about Communism? That it is flawed and can never work. End of story. No discussion. Next Subject. It would be worth the investment now to eliminate the competition further on down the road. You can't just print more bitcoins after all, and that's what governments love so much. You don't need a bank to store your money when you have an encrypted wallet in cold storage on a few PGP encrypted flash drives. Universal adoption would be the end of their business model.

There's probably flaws in that, but it's just a stupid idea running around my head that I don't know enough to disprove.

It could be something else besides banks too. Organized crime pulling a massive ripoff? Inflate the price by pumping high asks into the market then pulling out with a previously horded stash of coins. That might not cause a crash, but it would cause a drop in demand at some point. Again, just some fun little ideas to play around with.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Guide: OCing Sapphire 7970 3GB OC with Boost ( 11197-03-40G ) ~700MH/s on: April 09, 2013, 07:08:34 AM
Are you using integrated graphics while mining? I get artifacts when I enable the display output on the 7970 while mining, that's pretty normal since you're using 99% of the GPU then asking it to also render the desktop.

Thank you for the help.

I'm using the 7970 to mine and display my desktop, so that makes sense. I have a feeling I get better Mhash/s when the monitor is off, because the fans on the GPU sound different as soon as I turn the monitor on.

The tasks I do on the computer usually don't require the help of the 7970 --- motherboard has onboard 256mb graphics --- is it possible to use the onboard graphics for my display while the 7970 is dedicated to mining?
Yeah there should be an option in your BIOS to default to integrated graphics, possibly in a "north bridge" section. It might also just work if you plug your monitor into your integrated graphics port. I default to PCIe and use a cable from each card into the DVI and HDMI on my monitor so I can still game if I feel like wasting mining time Wink The cables are also an easy replacement for dummy plugs if you have spares laying around. If you select the onboard graphics in the bios you might not be able to tweak some OC settings (I wasn't able to change voltage for example, although there might be some way to overcome this, flashing a BIOS with your tweaks would probably work, but that comes with its own risks and warranty issues). It might vary by motherboard too. When I boot I have all "monitors" on so afterburner can apply my OC, then I disconnect the display coming from the mining card in the windows screen resolution panel (where it says extend my desktop, etc.). That way the card isn't doing any extra work rendering an empty desktop. When you do that though you can't track temps or change the OC. There might be a way to overcome that too that I don't know of. I make things a little easier on myself by setting up profiles in ultramon (not freeware) so I can do it with 2 clicks. Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm a bit tired and just walked my mom through uninstalling/reinstalling IE over the phone.  My mind is about as orderly as a bowl of noodles right now. I've been maxing out my OC so I'll probably post my final numbers tomorrow if it survives mining overnight. I was able to get it up to 740+ avg, but the OC was unstable with my temps well under control so I think I've found the ceiling for this particular card.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Worst case scenario: gov/banking manipulation at the root of this "bubble" on: April 09, 2013, 06:17:12 AM
How feasible would it be for an establishment (i.e. the US gov.) or group (i.e. Int. banking cartels) to manipulate the price of bitcoin and engineer a crash or other event of some sort to discredit bitcoin in they eyes of the public or otherwise profit? We all know that bitcoin is based on solid tech, but one look at Fox news will tell you the majority of the public doesn't care about facts or educating themselves on something.

This isn't some sort of conspiracy theory thread, but a worst case What If? scenario. Bitcoiners seem to have a healthy amount of paranoia so it's probably a good idea to consider and discuss all possibilities.

What kind of scheme could this indicate?
Who stand to profit?
How feasible would it be for a group to artificially inflate the market? (buy up all the cheap coins and put progressively higher asks out on them until the public starts to take over for them?)
What's the worst thing that could happen to bitcoin if the bubble pops?
etc.

I bet a transparently developed AISC would go nuts on Kickstarter if BFL doesn't deliver soon...
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 7970 underperformance on: April 09, 2013, 05:40:51 AM
OK - there is something different about my card. Here are the defaults:

core voltage: 1025 mV
core clock: 950 MHz
memory clock: 1425 MHz

540 MH/s

Two things are odd. First the default core voltage seems lower than 2x0ninja and others I've seen have. I can set it to what his default is (1170) and that allows me to get to a GPU clockspeed of 1100. At that I'm getting 590 MH/s - but as I increase the voltage or clock from there the has rate moves up and down over a range of 50 - 100 MH/s but ultimately leaving me at a lower rate.

core voltage: 1170 mV
core clock: 1100 MHz
memory clock: 1425 MHz

590 MH/s

I also don't understand why my memory clock is 1425 when in forums everywhere they talk about it being the core clock - 150. Mine is higher - to no benefit. Maybe they've recently changed the design? It may present a new tuning problem. Varying the memory clock doesn't seem to make any difference. FloridaBear - I do get around 520 for the same settings you are seeing 584, yes. Weird. :-/

12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [POLL] Do you need an easy security HOWTO (+ operating system)? on: April 08, 2013, 11:19:05 PM
Thank you so much for offering this to us.  I'm a newbie and I am so confused.  I want anonymity in my transactions.  Will this help in any way?

Not really unless you're concerned about your computer being monitored/infected and someone knowing that your wallet is attached to you. This is to make sure that your money is safe from being stolen if your computer is compromised.

Would like to see this on either a USB stick or separate partition.
This would kind of defeat the purpose since your computer could access the partition and an attacker could infect it that way. Same goes with a flash drive, the distro would be editable and could be infected. The only way to be 100% secure would be to boot it on a machine that will never touch the internet from that point on. Even if you're booting from a live CD the files you download could be infected and mount your main system disk in the background and relay information once you boot back into your normal OS. A bit paranoid, but 100% secure should really mean 100% secure.

Nothing special really.

-I 9 -k diablo -v 1 -w 256
Thanks for the tip, I switched kernels a few hours ago and I am getting 1-2 Mh/s more (avg). Not 10% so I guess mileage varies, but every little bit helps. Smiley
[EDIT] I noticed that I was getting a lot of rejected shares running diablo, not sure what's up with that. I switched back to poclbm and it seems to have stopped. What clock speeds are you using?

Nice guide, I have this card and might consider trying this.

Two questions:

1. I'm seeing screen fractals (almost always just in the taskbar, nowhere else) when running the card on the overclocked bios bank (1GHz) while bitcoin mining (590Mhash/s). Monitor is nothing fancy, 1280x1024, 19 inch. Running Win 7 and latest driver. Is this normal/okay, and would it be safe for me to follow this guide?

2. Would you think that mining with the side panel of the computer case off would be better for temperatures inside? I do have case fans on the front and back, so I would think it would be a good idea to leave the side panel on to keep the pull of airflow going, but at the same time, having the panel off seemed to work very well at allowing heat to expel right out the side.

Thank you

1. Are you using integrated graphics while mining? I get artifacts when I enable the display output on the 7970 while mining, that's pretty normal since you're using 99% of the GPU then asking it to also render the desktop. I doubt it's anything to worry about. I've read multiple places that damaging hardware is nearly impossible unless you overvolt. Keep an eye on the temps though. Coinslut's concerns about temperature and hardware lifespan are valid.

2. I have an NZXT Switch 810 full tower case with stock fans. It's a 10 fan case with 4 fans. The rear exhaust is designed for 2 120mm fans and comes with 1 ~65CFM 140mm fan. I can't exhaust the heat from 2 GPUs fast enough without an upgrade. My temps drop 10c with the side off. It's something that's happening because airflow is a mess, not something I recommend for everyone.

At a steady 60c here, I would be worried about lifetime of the card just to get 20% more bitcoin. It will take about a year for you to pay off a new card with that 20% extra. Probably just me.
Makes sense. Bit of a long term strategy though, I don't think OCing voids Sapphire's warranty and even then when you RMA it you'd have to mention it for them to know. I doubt this'll be a viable mining card after the 2 years runs out, so I'll probably end up selling it before then. Resale + earnings should be enough to buy an AISC. Just my thinking.

Would you mind sharing your clock speeds and settings?

I found running the diablo kernel increased my output by about 10%.
Interesting I just tried Diablo kernel earlier tonight and didn't notice anything. What settings are you using?

17  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why would you sell a mining rig to anybody? on: April 08, 2013, 05:59:35 AM
If hashing power centralized (like if BFL plugged in all their preorders) people would get weary of the 51% attack and the exchange rate would drop. Right now it seems like there's a lot of uninformed people jumping on the bitcoin bandwagon so I doubt that would actually happen at this point in time. AVALON said their plan was to mine with what they turned into batch 3, but ended up selling them because of other companies lack of delivery. If they had done that they'd have have a significant amount of the network's power. Basically for these companies to succeed they need to sell units to distribute the hashing power or everyone will bail on bitcoin leaving them with a bunch of expensive paperweights. They need to think longterm profits. I think they'll all probably keep their own mining farms, but they need to make sure the rest of the network has a reasonable amount as well.

IMHO better to stick with 580 MH/s underclocked using 20% less power and keeping the heat down)
Why's that? Using those numbers the performance scales linearly with the power draw. Airflow in my case is a mess because the manufacturer included less then half the fans and they're not configured for multi card setups. With the side of the case off I'm getting a steady 78c OCed. 20% more coins now will add up as the difficulty increases.
19  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Guide: OCing Sapphire 7970 3GB OC with Boost ( 11197-03-40G ) ~700MH/s on: April 08, 2013, 03:03:58 AM
thanks for this, I just got this card and working on getting it past 700 still, have you also tried the sapphire trixx? This allows for adjustments as well and core voltage out of the box, for some reason even though I adjusted the msi afterbuner config I was still unable to adjust the voltage.

this is my current command line

-v 2 -w 256 -k diakgcn -I 9 --temp-target 75 --auto-fan

core at 1155 , memory at 1040.. haven't played with volt adjustments yet.

Have you tweaked your settings lately?  Also what driver or sdk are you running..

Haven't messed with the settings lately, although I noticed that workspace 256 preforms the same as 64. I think I may have bumped the voltage a tiny bit. I'm running CCC 13-1 whql. I was using the beta (3?) just fine, but afterburner was driving me bonkers and I uninstalled everything and went with the whql when I reinstalled, mostly because I still had the install file.
I've played with trixx a little, but I wanted to undervolt the memory so I went with afterburner. I still haven't played with undervolting the memory yet though. I was waiting on a yate loon 140mm case fan before I started tweaking again, but it hasn't helped airflow in my case as much as I'd like (I'm running 2 cards on a small MB with bad spacing) so I'm probably going to have to find new 120mm fans for the back to fix the general airflow issues in my case. More money :\

why are you oc'ing your memory ? you're doing  litecoins ?

From what I understand its good to keep the memory down under 150 below the gpu... but im still learning a bit..
This is what I've read everywhere for this card too, and when I tried dropping it 160 below the core it produced a lot of HW errors for a few min then crashed the drivers.
20  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 7970 underperformance on: April 08, 2013, 02:48:02 AM
Hi all,

I have a new Sapphire HD 7970 Dual X I got a few days ago for my Windows 7 system.

Despite a lot of reading here and testing various mining and card options, I can't get more than 540 Mh/s out of it.

cgiminer (best I've tested)
"intensity" : "7",
"vectors" : "1",
"worksize" : "256",
"kernel" : "diablo"

Temperature = 67-68 degrees
Fanspeed = ~2400 - 2500 rpm
GPU Clock = 1000 Mhz (It won't go above that without a catalyst fault which then resets it to 950)
Running Catalyst 13.3 Beta though find them no different to the 13.1

Desktop remains very usable..

Now I've resigned myself to not getting above 1000 clockspeed - but I'd still expected more than 540Mh/s. I get around 390 from even my old 6970!

What variables are left to play with..?

I think I have the same card you do. I was only able to get it up to 1055 without overvolting. I'm getting 717Mh/s plus on mine with an overvolt and clock bump. I use vectors 1, setting it to 2 drops my Mh/s by at least 90.

Here's my config:
Code:
"intensity" : "9",
"kernel" : "poclbm",
"vectors" : "1",
"gpu-threads" : "5",
"worksize" : "256",
"queue" : "1"
I do my OC with afterburner.

I did a little thread on OCing the card here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=162739
