1  Economy / Economics / What percentage of Bitcoin would it take to manipulate prices? on: March 10, 2014, 04:39:06 AM
I was just thinking that 7% of all Bitcoins were stolen, lost, or whatever, from Mt Gox.  I wonder if that would be enough for price manipulation.   I'm just thinking that their might be more than then monetary value in having that much coin.  I have more thoughts one the matter, but lets see if anyone is interested in this conversation first.
2  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to get USD on an exchange from the US on: May 25, 2013, 02:03:50 AM
Not suitable for all users but we sell direct by Bank Wire.
$1,000 minimum.  0.89% fee.  All client communication by PGP.

Thats great, and I really appreciate you telling me about it, but not really what I'm looking for.
3  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to get USD on an exchange from the US on: May 25, 2013, 02:01:44 AM
I'm a Newbie hobby trading for last 3-4 weeks.

Since the Dwolla connection to MtGox was stopped, I've been using a US Bank -> Dwolla -> CampBX -> MtGox.   I've only transfered lower amounts (< $1K/day), but it transfers from Dwolla to CBX instantly (for me).  Then buy bitcoin on CampBX and then transfer bitcoin directly to MtGox (or other exchange), CBX will charge you the 0.0005 BTC miners transfer fee, but that $0.06 is very low.   Mt.Gox has been showing the bitcoin received and ready to trade in approx 1 hour.

I've been using http://bitcoinity.org/markets/campbx/USD to see the transactions / price.  My take is that although the overall volume is very low compared to MtGox, it seems you can purchase < 50 BTC easily and at a reasonable price relative to other exchanges.

Getting the USD back to a US Bank could be the reverse (send Bitcoin back to CBX, sell and USD back to Dwolla) this can be the lowest fees method.  Depending on Coinbase price, Coinbase is also an option back to US Bank through ACH system (although 4 business days delay sucks) plus 1% fee.  Tried this only once.  I sent a message to Coinbase asking that they add Dwolla instant transfer support, like CampBX.

I haven't done anything at higher USD$ amounts.  I am verified with MtGox.

Getting the USD back usually isn't the problem.  I think at Gox its only $20 USD for bank wire transfer.  Dwolla is great, and cheap, but does take a few days.  I'm giving campbx a shot.
4  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to get USD on an exchange from the US on: May 24, 2013, 05:34:28 AM
Yeah I already knew about coinbase, but they sell out all the time.  Not exactly what I was looking for.

There is also bitcoinary.com

I'm talking about exchanges like Gox, bitstamp, and btc-e

Still no idea whats going on with Okpay, and why there is so little activity at campbx?
5  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How to get USD on an exchange from the US on: May 23, 2013, 11:59:18 PM
Thanks.  I wasn't aware of that method
6  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Multiple pools cgminer Linux? on: May 23, 2013, 04:06:35 PM
When I tested load balancing, It did not increase my hashrate at all.  In fact I think it went down a little.  just FYI

From the cgminer readme

MULTIPOOL

FAILOVER STRATEGIES WITH MULTIPOOL:
A number of different strategies for dealing with multipool setups are
available. Each has their advantages and disadvantages so multiple strategies
are available by user choice, as per the following list:

FAILOVER:
The default strategy is failover. This means that if you input a number of
pools, it will try to use them as a priority list, moving away from the 1st
to the 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and so on. If any of the earlier pools recover, it will
move back to the higher priority ones.

ROUND ROBIN:
This strategy only moves from one pool to the next when the current one falls
idle and makes no attempt to move otherwise.

ROTATE:
This strategy moves at user-defined intervals from one active pool to the next,
skipping pools that are idle.

LOAD BALANCE:
This strategy sends work to all the pools to maintain optimum load. The most
efficient pools will tend to get a lot more shares. If any pool falls idle, the
rest will tend to take up the slack keeping the miner busy.

BALANCE:
This strategy monitors the amount of difficulty 1 shares solved for each pool
and uses it to try to end up doing the same amount of work for all pools.
7  Economy / Trading Discussion / How to get USD on an exchange from the US on: May 23, 2013, 04:44:15 AM
Okay first time I put money into an exchange I used Bitfloor and deposited money at Bank of America.  Thats gone.
Next used Dwolla to put money into MtGox, and now thats gone.
This last time I used Okpay to put money into BTC-e, and now thats going away, and I don't even understand why
Quote
Deposits of OKPAY will only be available until May 23, 2013, after that deposits will be unavailable within 2 months due to the suspension of work with OKPAY merchant working with bitcoin.

So whats left?

Is the US getting cut off, or are we going to constantly have to find new way to get our USD in exchanges?

Whats going on with Okpay?

Why is there so little activity on campbx?  They seem like they have plenty of funding options.  Has everyone lost faith in a US based exchange?

And why won't this list tag go away when I edit?[/list]

Cool, thanks!  I was just curious.

Ever since I stopped mining bitcoin, I've missed getting those extra namecoins.

So you can mine multiple pools.
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Mine Litecoin and Novacoin at the same time cgminer on: May 22, 2013, 04:42:27 AM
This might be a stupid question, but I was just wondering if its possible to mine both coins at the same time.  I know that you can set multiple pools in cgminer, and both Litecoin and Novacoin use scrypt.  So I was wondering if I set 2 mining pools, one Litecoin and the other Novacoin, if I could mine both?

No I didn't but I'm not sure how that will make a difference
12  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Could not get unpowered 1x16 riser cable to work on: May 12, 2013, 11:07:31 PM
So both aticonfig and lspci are showing 4 cards.
I cant be sure about all six cards, but at least an additional card should work with the presence pin trick.

Just recently bumped into the same issue (a fifth card not recognized) and the trick did the...trick Smiley

No luck.  Same thing.  Oh well

I got 4 cards in right now

Everything shows up.  It just doesn't work, and I couldn't find any settings in the BIOS that would help.  Oh well I guess I need to buy another motherboard.  Would have been nice, and saved me some money, but nothing ever seems to go as planned.

OK, read this (some other good info in there): http://blog.zorinaq.com/?e=42

I see now, but the cards showed up in all but that one slot.  Its when I went to test if everything was working with that I had problems.

Code:
aticonfig --lsa
Shows cards in all slots but the #2

But when I test with
Code:
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt
and
Code:
./cgminer -n
is when things go wrong

I'm going to try some bios setting first, and then maybe the pin shorting.
16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Could not get unpowered 1x16 riser cable to work on: May 12, 2013, 09:01:43 PM
You could try the presence pin shorting trick.

Not sure what that is.  Tried looking it up.  Found mention of it, but nothing telling me what it is.

It did lead me to some possible bios settings that might help.

I got 6 7850's, and I tried to put them all on one mobo using unpowered riser cables.  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04, cgminer 3.0.0, Catalyst 12.08.  The motherboard is a GIGABYTE FM2 AMD A85X with 3 PCI-E x1 slots and 3 PCI-E x16 slots.  I'll provide links.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202004

Here are my results

0  (x1)  Yes
1  (x16) Yes
2  (x1)  No
3  (x1)  Does not even show up
4  (x16) Yes
5  (x16) Yes

So I disconnected the #2 and #3 cards, and this is what happened

0  (x1)  Yes
1  (x16) Yes
2  (x16) No
3  (x16) No

So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.  I was using 2 750w power supplies.  If there is some trick to making this work, I would really like to know, but for the time being I'm going back to using 3 cards per board.

Thoughts and comments, are very much appreciated.

Nice venting, this works better than my wall mounted blower since you get to utilise natural behavior of hot air rising upwards. Clean looking job.

Thanks

Is it just venting into your attic? You may want to add another fan to vent it all out of the attic. But, nice job!  Grin

The attic is well vented so no need to an attic fan, and the fan should help cool it off as well.
