1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: what is 1 Findme6GJJaMxS5f63ewTMD1yKqnFzgo8 supposed to be ? on: January 16, 2014, 03:08:07 PM
These are from a gambling websiteas mentioned.  Since they only send 2 Satoshis and without a mining fee, the funds will disappear from your account in about three days.  However, the "findme" string would suggest that they do indeed want you to find them.

Apparently I have to keep typing because you can't submit the same topic to different threads more than once.  So I have to make this post substantially different from the other one where I answered a similar question in the same manner.  Also, this site does not allow you to search within the first 20 seconds of having logged in.  Serioulsy - try it - log in right away and then search for something.  It will tell you to wait 16 seconds!  It's crazy.  I've never seen such a thing... does this mean that the computers can't keep up with the humans?  That would be an interesting twist...

3  Economy / Economics / Re: About "investing in bitcoin does not create value" on: August 31, 2013, 11:54:43 PM
Today I bought $4500 worth of gold and silver using Bitcoins.  (Admittedly, I sold those, and used the cash to buy the metals.)  Needless to say, investing in Bitcoin can create value - it just depends on how you think about it.

(For the record, I think it its own value.  That it can create other value is well is a nice bonus.)   Grin

5  Bitcoin / Mining support / CGMiner Using CPU Instead of GPU? on: July 08, 2013, 01:21:05 PM
Hi All,

I followed this guide:

http://rdmsnippets.com/2013/03/20/bitcoin-mining-with-ubuntu-12-04-tls-and-cgminer/

adjusting for the fact that I have a 64 bit system and 2xRadeon 6950 cards.  (I changed the CFLAGS for compile.)

Everything works smoothly, EXCEPT that CGMiner seems to be using my CPU and only one of my GPUs.

When I run ./cgminer -n, it shows both my 6950s.

However, in the output of the CGMiner, I see that GPU0 is getting 33k/344khs.  GPU1 is getting 399.2M/399.6Mhs.

In my previous setup with this computer (which I b0rk3d when I tried a beta driver) I was able to get roughly 375-400Mhs from both cards, to total around 750-800MHs on average.

*EDIT 1*
I have the GPUs overclocked with:
amdconfig --ode --adapter=all
amdconfig --odsc 900,300 --adapter=all
amdconfig --odcc
before running CGMiner.  This is how it was done with my previous setup that worked.
*EDIT 1*

It seems to me then that either:

1 - CGMiner is using the CPU instead of the first GPU and reporting that as a GPU.  Given that the temperature is running at 97.5C whereas the other GPU is running at 44.0C, this seems more likely to me.  I can feel the heat coming from one card and not the other, and the CPU is quite warm.
2 - My first card is somehow no longer working when it was just a few days ago under a different setup.  I consider this less likely.

*EDIT 2*
Using:
amdconfig --odgc --adapter=all
I can see that the GPU Load on Adapter 0 is 99%, and on Adapter 1 it is 0%.  This confirms my suspicions.
*EDIT 2*

*EDIT 3*
I've confirmed the second card is present in the X settings:
#cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep -A 3 Section\ \"Device\"
shows two device sections
for PCI:2:0:0
and
for PCI:3:0:0
*EDIT 3*

Anyone have any ideas?  What settings can I change to force it to use both cards and not the CPU?  Or preferably all cards AND the CPU?  (Every kh counts!)
6  Economy / Service Discussion / Coinbase and "Fraud"? on: April 23, 2013, 12:42:05 PM
Has anyone else gotten a transaction canceled from coinbase.com due to "potential fraud"?

I put through a buy transaction for 1BTC at $167.  That went through with no problem, with the exception that it took a week to actually complete because they took so long to withdraw the money.

When it went down, I put in an order for 2BTC at $67.  This transaction, which was to have completed in just a few hours, was just canceled:

Hi,

Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel this order because it appears to be high risk. We do not send out any bitcoins on high risk transactions, and your bank account will not be charged.

Please understand that we do this to keep the community safe and avoid fraudulent transactions. Apologies if you are one of the good users who gets caught up in this preventitive measure - we don't get it right 100% of the time, but we need to be cautious when it comes to preventing fraud.

You may have more luck trying again in a few weeks. Best of luck and thank you for trying Coinbase.

Kind regards,
The Coinbase Team

To me, this is highly suspicious.  It smacks of potential fraud on THEIR side:

1 - They're more than happy to put through high buy orders when it takes a week to get the money and it can go down.
2 - They don't put through a transaction when the price I bought at is roughly half of the current price.  I suspect they're waiting to buy coins and it doesn't work well for them always so they cancel the transactions that don't work in their favour.
3 - They're potentially over-subscribed and so are cherry-picking (at random? non-randomly?) which transactions to fulfill or not.

They haven't charged me, and say they're not going to charge me, so right now there's no actual malfeasance.  However, I am highly suspicious of them now.

Has anyone else had similar experiences or am I just being too paranoid?

8  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [3700 Gh/s] DeepBit.net PPS+Prop,instant payouts, we pay for INVALID BLOCKS too on: April 15, 2013, 12:41:53 AM
I was referring to the computers on which I will run the software from Bitminter.  For instance, my Macbook Pro is significantly less powerful than my rig w/two Radeons.  It was not a reflection on the pools and I will try to be less ambiguous in the future.   Wink
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Suggestion: Payment Return Addresses on: April 14, 2013, 12:40:07 AM
Ja, I saw that when I posted my question... the thread even warned me that no one had posted in a really long time.  Of course I did not let that stop me!  I *was* genuinely curious after all!   Cheesy
10  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [3700 Gh/s] DeepBit.net PPS+Prop,instant payouts, we pay for INVALID BLOCKS too on: April 14, 2013, 12:38:11 AM
Well I switched to bitminter... there's no idling time and the Java software means that I can also use it on my other machines.  While significantly less powerful, every little bit helps.

That having been said, I have a balance on deepbit that is less than .01, so it seems I'll never get that out?  There's no instant payment at that level, and the hourly payment will never be triggered either, since that also requires having a balance of .01 or more.   Huh

Granted, it's not a huge amount, but if someday 1BTC = $10K it will be then.   Cry

I'm curious - genuinely - in what situation would there be "change" to give back?  Why would you not specify a price that doesn't involve it?

It almost seems like I'm outpacing the work the pool can give me, which strikes me as odd w/only 2GPUs.

Here's the information on my cards:

Adapter 0 - AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
                            Core (MHz)    Memory (MHz)
           Current Clocks :    250           150
             Current Peak :    900           300
  Configurable Peak Range : [500-950]     [1375-1450]
                 GPU load :    0%

Adapter 1 - AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
                            Core (MHz)    Memory (MHz)
           Current Clocks :    250           150
             Current Peak :    900           300
  Configurable Peak Range : [500-950]     [1375-1450]
                 GPU load :    4%

(For instance, right now, they are idling.)

I should mention that I don't think it's heat - I'm not using the case, the fans are exposed to outside air, and let's just say it's not warm where I am.  I've got the windows open and am wearing two layers myself.  ;-)
14  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mtgox trades per second on: April 12, 2013, 11:50:23 AM
My guess is they're still using the old "Magic the Gathering" trading engine, which would work just fine if people traded 1 card per second.   Grin   Wink Wink

I've got 2xRadeon HD6970s, using pocblm, and my miners spend a lot of time idling on this pool.

I'm connecting without a problem, but it seems the cards 'run out of work'.  Sometimes if I kill the script and start it again, they start fetching work again and get back to mining.  That doesn't always work though.

Here's my command line:

python pocblm.py http://myemail@mydomain:mypassword@pit.deepbit.net:8332 -v -w 128 --no-bfl

I originally had "-w 256" but reduced it.

Suggestions?  Thoughts?
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New bitcoin explainer video: Opinions please? on: April 11, 2013, 10:56:43 PM
It's a very good video, but I think you've got a couple of trademark/copyright issue possibilities...?

1 - "Ebi" looks a lot like a certain other website.
2 - The guy driving the flying car - that car looks a lot like one that was on a cartoon when I was younger.

Otherwise, well done.

Was it made in house or did you hire an external firm?

You've got a donation plug on their twice - left column and footer.  You should really only have one, or else you seem needy.

Also, you should be able to embed the Bitcoin video.

I second the idea to change "NO1" to "#1".

Actually, the Canadian government is already doing things in the arena of digital currencies, with their Mint Chip:

I sent them just under 21BTC earlier in the year for the privilege of finding out.  ;-)

Back then, using round numbers, that was about $1000.  Now, it's about $1750.  (Earlier today, it was about $2500 or so...)
