1  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S7 not hashing on: October 03, 2017, 04:39:36 AM
I couldn't get it hashing again after numerous resets and reboots so I guess it just died on me somehow. I cut my losses and bought a new one; if this one works I might try swapping parts between them to identify what failed.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I factory reset it and flashed new firmware for good measure too. I got it to come online for another couple minutes or so with everything hashing correctly before it lost internet connection and started beeping, and now that's what it does every time I turn it on and allow it to sit for several minutes. That leads me to think it actually is an internet connection problem now.

But the issue is my internet connection is fine and works perfectly for my other miner through the exact same router, and the DNS issues only start when I turn the S7 on. So it seems trying to run the miner crashes the internet, but the internet needs to on for the miner to boot properly.

And to answer your question: yes the fan blade had probably been knocked off during the shipping, but like I said when I popped it back on the fan seemingly ran just fine. It's intake fan too if that means anything.

EDIT: I noticed that the red-orange lights on two of the three hash boards are occasionally flashing when I leave it running. I took that to mean that the middle hash board isn't working, however the problem (and the flashing lights) persists even after disconnecting that board.

I recently bought an S7 off eBay and I cannot get it to start hashing. When I turn it on it seems to go through a normal boot sequence, then right as it tries to come online the red light next to the Ethernet cable comes on and it doesn't hash. Logging into it through the IP shows that the hardware version is x.x.x.x and the miner status page is completely empty, which from what I've read would indicate that it encountered an issue while booting.

I thought at first that it might be a bad fan, and discovered that the blade had popped off the motor slightly so it wouldn't spin. After popping it back on, the miner briefly came online and hashed for around a minute before it crashed again. Subsequent attempts to bring it back online resulted in the instant crash that was occurring from the beginning, but this time I could see that both fans were working.

My next thought was that it was a bad board. I tested each hashing board separately and the problem persisted with each one. Doing that also led me to conclude that it wasn't an issue with my power supplies, since the demand to run just one board would be well within the ability of my power supplies (1 HP 750W and 1 HP 1200W, and I know to power the boards before the controller). I also took the miner apart and visually inspected each board; nothing looked damaged or missing on any board, and there certainly wasn't anything that looked remotely burned.

At this point I am exasperated as to what the issue might be. I do not think all the boards could be dead since it did successfully hash for a minute and all the boards came up as working. I also do not think it could be my internet connection, as I'm currently running an S4 through the same router with no issues, and the S7 never beeps, which I've read is what it does when it can't connect.

A note about the internet connection though: I don't know what to make of this, but every time the miner starts up and fails to boot properly, it does something to the DNS connection in my router that kills the ability of anything connected to the router to use DNS, which is only fixed when the miner is turned off and my router restarted. The one time it did boot properly, however, there were no DNS issues until after it crashed again.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas I'm open to anything.

What would be the max frequency and voltage I could set on the compact with just a single USB 3.0 port? I'm just a broke college student so I can't really afford to invest in a $200 powered USB hub, and I know I could achieve a similar effect with a Y-cable in terms of current, but it'll be a while before I could get one.

Thanks guys I'm understanding all this now. I've been playing around with the clock settings and voltage, and after dialing the voltage to .77V (I don't have a voltmeter on me so that's based off the picture at the beginning of this thread) I was able to hold 300 MHz for ten minutes before the stick seemingly crashed and couldn't be recognized as a device by both cgminer and Windows. After unplugging it for a little bit I got it working again and it's been humming along at 290MHz with no issues for well over an hour now.

I've seen plenty of posts where people get their compacs to run at 20GH/s (I'm sitting at 15GH/s) so I'm wondering what I'd need to do to get it there without crashing. Do I need to dial up the voltage more? Or is the current draw insufficient (I have it in a 3.0 USB port on the front of my desktop)?

You guys are overlooking the stats. He is mining to a pool that has set the MINUMUM Share difficulty over 2000.  Many pools won't lower the Min until you hit it at least once. His miners BEST SHARE so far in the screenshot is 75. He's got a ways to go. Now some pools will start hiding work if you don't submit a valid share fast enough, while others will begin lowering diff after a certain amount of time. What mmpool's strategy is I wouldn't know because I've not used it. The message "Share Above Target" really means that your miner submitted work that is not above the minimum share difficulty ie. 1/1 and 2/1 when what you need at mmpool was at least 2.5k/2.5k Diff.
Probably a stupid question but is there any way to increase the difficulty on my stick? It starts out around 20 but then over time increases drastically (currently 829 after 5 minutes). Is there any way to accelerate that process? I'm very new to this so I don't completely understand what the difficulty factor is related to (I assume it has something to do with hashrate).

EDIT: I learned a little more by playing around with it. I'm using slushpool now for its very low minimum share difficulty of 9 and I'm submitting shares at a rate of about one per second. However, something like 80-90% of the shares the stick tries to send are still below the minimum difficulty. Is there a way to prevent it from even attempting to work on shares below the minimum difficulty? It seems like a waste of power and efficiency.

I think the one accepted share was a fluke. It's only sent one other accepted share and is reading 0.00GH/s. Here's a screenshot.

EDIT: After ten minutes it started operating normally. That's one hell of a start-up time but I'll take it over a dud unit.

Did you let it run for very long, or turn it off immediately? I got the same error testing 2Pacs on solo.ckpool, but after a minute or so it started accepting shares regularly. Not sure what's the cause.
I let it run for about a minute or two. I'll try letting it run for longer to see if there's a change.

EDIT: I've left it running for about 10-15 minutes now with no change.
Then something else is up outside of my realm. I don't use CGminer though the new sticks look like I'll have to for them. The delay should only be a few min or less. I think with mine and BFGminer it's like a min or 2.

edit: and if you try BFG - remove the Zadig USB driver that CG requires. As I recall it and the one built into BFG do not play well together.
I let it run in BFG for a little bit and got one share to go through so far, which is better than I've done in the last 5-6 hours of trying to troubleshoot so thank you Grin

I just purchased and installed this miner and I've gotten it to run in cgminer, however trying to mine only ever creates rejected shares with the description "Share above target". I'm completely new to cgminer (and to Bitcoin mining in general, I've been dabbling in GUI mining with Nicehash) and am totally baffled as to why this is happening or what to do about it. I've tested multiple mining pools and they all produce the same result.
