1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON [2017-04-23: update to 0.9.12.0] on: August 06, 2017, 11:12:59 AM
I believe Aeon should consider changing its ticker from AEON to XAE to conform to the ISO 4217 standard for currencies, much like XMR (Monero) and XBT (Bitcoin, on some exchanges like Kraken).
I've already posted similar comments on other crypto threads, but here's my general take on this:

  • The code space for X** is quite limited with only two variable letters. This has worked fine with just a handful of codes like XAU and XDR, but it will be confusing if all major cryptos start adopting the scheme.
With only two letters the codes cannot be very descriptive.
  • ISO codes are mainly for national currencies, and as such represent the old world where only nations can issue and control money. In cryptocurrencies, we have a much improved system for the new world, and I see no need to pander to the old powers. "Please give me an ISO code, I want to be taken as seriously as EUR and USD which can be printed willy-nilly at the whim of governments."

While there are many crypto coins, the reality is that there are not many crypto currencies. At this point the majority of new cryptos are not currencies but tokens for smart contract systems and various things like that. Currencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Monero, and Aeon, are quite different from tokens like Ethereum, Sia, Counterparty, etc. In other words, there isn't any reason for these tokens to use a standard meant for currencies, but since Aeon is meant to be a currency it should probably consider adopting this standard.

I don't disagree with you that there isn't a need to conform, but I do think the standard is nice and gives an air of professionalism to the project.

A four letter ticker doesn't look as nice in my opinion, but of course if people prefer it then that's perfectly fine too. Smiley

I think I would prefer to keep it the same and not risk any issues with Bittrex. Changing it would just confuse most people too since this isn't a super well known coin that many people are following regularly for updates etc...

Bittrex may not change it now, and that would be okay if that's how it has to be, but they'd eventually change it when Aeon gets more popular probably (and in the worst case they'd be the odd man out). The key point is that if it isn't changed soon, it will be nearly impossible to change in the future when Aeon is on as many exchanges as Monero, for example.

I don't think it would confuse anyone actually, since you already type "Aeon" into the search bar regardless since its the name of the coin as well as the ticker. The new ticker would be alongside the same name and people would easily figure it out on places like CoinMarketCap, for example. Most people would probably notice just from Bitcointalk/Reddit/Slack/IRC/etc.

I don't think being afraid of a single exchange refusing to change the ticker is something to put so much weight on, since years from now they might not even exist for all we know. The most important thing is to consider whether the ticker is preferable, and I personally think it would be a large improvement as a four letter ticker isn't very pretty.

I've mentioned this on Slack/IRC and a few people seemed to like the idea, so I figured I should also mention it here so it can be discussed.

I believe Aeon should consider changing its ticker from AEON to XAE to conform to the ISO 4217 standard for currencies, much like XMR (Monero) and XBT (Bitcoin, on some exchanges like Kraken).

Please voice your opinion on whether you think this is a good idea or not, as it is better to agree upon this early on when its easier to change this (as there are less exchanges to make the change on).

I love it when projects have quirks, like a way of speaking or something. If I would love monero for nothing else, then I would definitely love it for the fact that the plural form is moneroj Smiley brilliant!

Wondering how you people pronounce it when you read it outloud? The correct way in esperanto would be something like moneroi right? but i always read it like Moneroj with a jay sound at the end...

Esperanto can be read how its written, since it was made to be simple to learn in this way (unlike English), so once you learn how to pronounce a letter it is the same in every word.

The J sound in Esperanto is closest a Y sound in English.

To hear the pronunciation of the J sound, as well as how it sounds after a vowel you can check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wvOsT-Nju4 (@8:30-10:00)

100 @ 2.75 mil M - send 275 mil        / DeptStore::412
650 @ 2.75 mil M - send 1787.5 mil    / Loaf::680

Congratulations to the winners, please send required amounts to Gringotts [1963]

The auction values Phoenix Trust at 27.5 Billion M

edit:
The next S-PT auction will happen AFTER the depository has opened
The next distribution of Phoenix Trust shares will be 1000 S-PT, paid as depositor bonuses during Gringotts opening phase

WooHoo, can't believe I picked up 100 shares for 275 mil, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but with Clans dead the CK land mass is fixed at current level for the foreseeable future, and Phoenix Trust owns 5 whole chaps, plus a load of palaces and high paying buildings. 27.5 Bil for the whole portfolio is ridiculously cheap. If building payouts ever restart S-PT income alone from existing buildings will probably be +250mil per year.

@KH, very generous with the depo bonuses too, how will they be paid?

The current number of payouts for all buildings when added up equals 840,987,701 M per year, though this will likely be adjusted whenever payouts function again.

At current building material prices, the building costs of all the buildings adds up to roughly 62,354,016,000 M. This is based primarily around the BLD cost of 100,000 M which accounts for 80-90% of the building cost, and if you consider that BLD (to my understanding) is intended to be pegged to this price, then perhaps this can give some perspective on the potential value of the portfolio. Of course, that doesn't include the land value itself (as well as the fact that quite a few lots don't have buildings at all), and other various factors that could influence the price of any piece of land.

Phoenix Trust Update
For those who haven't noticed yet, Phoenix Trust has listed ask prices on all of its land.

The prices will serve as a starting point for negotiations.

Some people have already made bids, and we hope to see more interest soon.

Our strategy is to begin selling once offers are good enough, and provide liquidity to the market by acquiring new land as opportunities arise.

Feel free to make contact via PM on Bitcointalk or IRC.

Announcement

Great news, Phoenix Trust has appointed mulu (ID: 1258) as trustee, he has full control of the Phoenix Trust account.

The trustee fee is 5% (500 shares), and the Trust is starting off with 300M M, plus the remaining property assets from OZ & Hokusai.

He has authority to control all day-to-day operations of the Trust from this moment on.

His mandate is simple:
'in consultation with the shareholders, maximise the return to shareholders of the trust'

What strategy he pursues is up to him!

I wish mulu well, good luck, and thanks for taking on this position!!

Thanks, I'm happy to have the opportunity.

For anyone interested in discussing a building or lot in the future, feel free to message me on Bitcointalk or on IRC.
