Money, among other things, is amoral. People lie, cheat, and kill over these things. That makes the person immoral, not the thing. It seems everyone is an extremist these days. You would think that with greater access to information and greater freedom, people would think instead of adopting other people's views unquestionably. Truly a shame.
2  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Question about PSU on: May 16, 2013, 04:02:15 PM
Seasonic is top brand. Pretty expensive too. Builders who care about the PSU use seasonic.
3  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Anyone heard about these guys? on: May 16, 2013, 04:00:02 PM
Can anyone see a simple adsl modem motherboard in that picture on the main site? i can see a phone line plug (the grey port) next to a inductor coil (the yellow and black box next to it) the yellow network connector, next to a switch, next to a barrel type power plug? with the caption under the picture: "mage above: main control board + my ipod and mouse for scale." and that soldered aluminium can is EMS shield for the SoC...

sorry, when i looked at the post, clicked the link, passed all other posts and went eh, no, obvious fake...

That aluminium(?) plate shield near the top taking 1/3 of the board space looks like something from a telecommunications board. I've seen it is modems, cable phone equipment. Yellow ethernet slot...
4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / how are the asics? on: May 15, 2013, 10:25:57 PM
How are the ASIC operations so far? Good crunching? Any problems? Is heat a problem? Do they live up to expectations?
5  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CISPA: Congressperson's reply on: May 15, 2013, 06:32:02 PM
What to make of it?
Form letter, your congresscritter probably was never even aware you sent the message in the first place, and wouldn't care if they did.

Al your dataz are belong to them.

Well, I got 1 reply before this that was definitely a robo letter. This one is probably written up by a staffer to all the ppl who wrote on behalf on this bill.
6  Other / Politics & Society / CISPA: Congressperson's reply on: May 15, 2013, 05:38:50 PM
I sent a msg regarding the Cispa bill and got this reply back:

Quote
Our current patchwork cyber security policy is both antiquated and fails to ensure much needed cooperation amongst various agencies. We need to develop a 21st century policy to protect the country from cyber attacks, both in the public and private sectors. An attack could have a potentially debilitating impact on our national and economic security.

Experts in both government and the private sector agree that one of the biggest obstacles to strengthening cyber security and preventing a disruptive cyber attack is the sharing of threat information between these sectors.  That is why I supported the Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act (CISPA), which passed the House of Representatives on a bipartisan basis in April. CISPA provides the government, private entities, and utilities with the legal authority to share "cyber threat intelligence."

This version of CISPA includes strengthened privacy protections. It requires the government to eliminate irrelevant personal information. To address concerns that the cyber threat data will be sent to a military entity or the National Security Agency (NSA), it directs the President to designate a civilian entity within the Department of Homeland Security to serve as the entry point for cyber threat information and an entity within the Department of Justice for cyber crimes information.

It is my hope that the bill's privacy protections will be strengthened as it makes its way through the legislative process. For example, private companies should be required to minimize personal information before sharing cyber threat info with the government or other companies.

What to make of it?

8  Economy / Marketplace / Re: What to make&sell for BTC? on: May 11, 2013, 10:38:12 PM
I want a D'alessandro's cheese steak frozen and shipped to Colorado.

hmm, easy to obtain but shipping how? Food, kinda risky. Wouldn't want you to get sick. It's not like I run Omaha mail order steaks.
9  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: PSA: Malta 7990s are NOT suitable for mining! on: May 11, 2013, 02:44:10 PM

Nope.  You said 1 card costs $2000, and 1 card will use over 500 watts to get the same hash power or it will hash a lot less.

He said, she said... I hate taking sides but just post the quote where dogie said 1 card cost $2k. I looked at the first page of this thread and did not see that.

dogie probably overreacted. What does "suitable" mean anyway? It's all relative to the buyer. It's not a Nvidia vs AMD mining comparison. It's more of a power-draw vs price vs hashrate suitability discussion.

Edit: changed 1k to 2k typo
10  Economy / Marketplace / What to make&sell for BTC? on: May 10, 2013, 07:43:05 PM
So what products can I make that might be of interest to others here? My one idea is to write articles or guides and have people tip BTC if it's helpful.

What kind of things do people want (legal stuff only) that are hard to get? What kind of stuff do you want, but can't find anywhere?

I'm just trying to see what folks would like to spend BTC on. Amazon and eBay give you the chance to buy almost anything these days.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A new Catchy name for 0.0001 BTC? on: May 10, 2013, 06:52:08 PM

It currently has a value of ~0.12 US cents.

A dollar is a dollar even if it is only 0.77EUR. Should be the same for BTC. If mBTC (1/1000 th) is no longer used, then it will get discontinued. Just like 50 cent pieces or 2 dollars.

So what's the penny, nickles, etc equivalents of bitcoins? Make the Satoshi=100BTC?
12  Other / Off-topic / Re: Who DeathAndTaxes is? on: May 10, 2013, 06:33:20 PM
Now Satoshi's coding (nuts and bolts)?  Blech that is another story but nobody complains that Einstein's notes are hard to read because he had bad handwriting.

U have placed two spaces between sentences! Just like Satoshi!  Wink

EDIT: The text I made bold was a hint! U r very smart, I suspect u just make appearance that u r not so smart...

Maybe D&T is just part of the older generation. The 2 space after sentences was something they did in the early days of typing, I think. I had a teacher in middle school who told us to do that in reports.
13  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Help needed exhausting my rigs on: May 10, 2013, 12:56:39 AM
I have an idea, but don't know if it's an good. Instead of blowing air horizontally like you do now, blow air from floor to ceiling. The cooler air is lower because of density and you blow that over the fans and up to the ceiling. Like this:

-----------------ceiling

[-------------] Miner
[-------------]

{^^^^^^^^} Fan blowing air up
|                  |
--------------------Floor

Probably a better recirculating setup?
14  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Excuse me miners , couldn't ask a few questions please. on: May 09, 2013, 06:37:59 PM
Yeah thanks for your advice guys
Was a little quick in ordering but hay I soon will be mining our electric costs are zero as it's combined in our rent.

The motherboard can hold two more cards!! so which cards would you buy?

Might want to check the temperatures that the 2 cards put out before adding another 2 more. They're so close together. The bottom one might be heating up the other card.
15  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: BTC accepted for Solar + Mining? on: May 08, 2013, 11:25:32 PM
You guys keep looking at it the wrong way. It's not just about using BTC to support mining ventures. It's about using BTC to pay for real-life objects and services. Once you got an economy around BTC, the volatility might decrease.

The panels are not just for mining. It's to decrease the amount you pay for electricity, to do your part for the environment, and get some tax credits. I'm not too sure how the tax credit and BTC thing will work.

Stop being so narrow minded.
E  x  p  a  n  d  your views.
16  Economy / Economics / Re: banks and BTC on: May 08, 2013, 11:03:58 PM
maybe I'm old skool but I didn't want to thread-jack. Better to start a new topic instead of embedding it in the middle of a list thread.
17  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Seasonic X-850 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply for $100 AR on: May 08, 2013, 01:30:04 AM
PSUs are much harder to sell on eBay than any other computer component (maybe besides cases).  Brand names like Corsair seem to sell a little easier than Antec, Seasonic, OCZ, PC P&C, Rosewill, or NZXT.

Hell I tried selling my Antec TPQ-1200 OC for $125 for several months before I eventually got a buyer.

Only Corsair is brand name? Seasonic is the top brand out there. My NZXT is Seasonic guts + 5 year warranty + 3-day replacement of failed units.
18  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Government Response to Bitcoin on: May 06, 2013, 03:56:14 PM
I still don't understand statements like the ones above. If everyone is focused on exchanging with fiat, then how can BTC anything more than a commodity? Sure, countries and import/exporters need to look at global currency and exchange rates, but many people within countries trade only their currency without exchanging.

Isn't the strength of the currency based on its inherent value? Won't the value increase if it can be used to trade products/services?

Just some ideas; I'm not an expert on currencies.
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How can we make a coin/hardware that will go the poor, in the third world on: May 06, 2013, 03:27:26 PM
Why are you all trying to make mining accessible to those who can't afford it? Why not focus on building a BTC based charity? Build the use of BTC and not the mining of BTC. It's hard to buy things with BTC now but it is possible to trade BTC within the community, like a real currency.

So trade for services or community-created objects that can be provided to the poor. If all you people think about is mining, you can't advance BTC as a currency.

Maybe we can work with an NGO for logistics of the final service/product delivery. This might shift the image of BTC from bad (silkroad) to good (benefiting society).

Otherwise, BTC is only useful for llama socks and speculators.
20  Economy / Economics / banks and BTC on: May 06, 2013, 03:18:29 PM
I saw the list of friendly/unfriendly banks. Can someone explain how they are unfriendly to individuals? I haven't bought or traded BTC so I don't really know the process. Are some of the sites where you trade BTC blacklisted?

What are you guys using for BTC trading? Bank transfers, wires? I only ever used a credit card or paypal on online purchase.

Thanks
