24  Other / Off-topic / Just what is a clock buffer anyway? on: November 29, 2012, 12:32:13 AM
Hi Everyone,

We've been very busy recently, unfortunately I couldn't catch up with the forums. There is a correction to be made: Chips are not and were not flawed. We decided to add certain clock buffers to improve noise-resistance and possibly increase frequency even further. The improve in noise resistance was our real goal (average frequency increase across a full wafer can be a bi-product). The decision was made to increase the near 100% chance of success even more. We'll keep you posted. If you had any questions, please let us know.

Regards,
Nasser

So just what is a clock buffer?  What does one do, where is BFL likely to be adding them to their product, how many will they be adding, and why that number and location?

From the name, I can imagine some of the things one might do.  I could just google it, but discussing it here sounds like more fun.

Discuss.
25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Need help understanding litecoin mining calculator on: November 03, 2012, 09:38:24 PM
I'm having some trouble understanding the numbers I'm seeing on litecoinpool's mining calculator.

http://www.litecoinpool.org/calc?hashrate=325&difficulty=22.36096172

Putting in my hashrate and current difficulty, the graph puts 50% probability of finding a block at about 2.4 days.

But the numbers shown in the Expected Rewards section don't seem to match.  If I'm finding a block every 2.4 days on average, I would expect to earn 145.833 LTC at 7 days, but it shows 102.332 LTC.

Why the difference?
26  Other / Politics & Society / Lawmakers seek to restrict your right to resell the things you own on: October 27, 2012, 02:17:27 PM

From the page:

Next week, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether you have the right to sell your stuff on eBay. Do you really own the smartphone or computer you’re using to read this? If you sold your books, would you be breaking the law? A federal court in New York says you would be, even if you legally paid for and bought them.

It's unbelievable, but trademark and copyright holders are trying to use a legal loophole to take away your right to sell things that you own. The mainstream media is starting to catch on, with the Wall Street Journal just running an article headlined, "YOUR RIGHT TO RESELL YOUR OWN STUFF IS IN PERIL".
27  Economy / Speculation / Strange activity on btc-e on: October 27, 2012, 01:33:14 AM
It looks like someone just made 2 huge market orders on btc-e, a buy then a sell, on LTC/USD:

http://www.ltc-charts.com/period-charts.php?period=10-days&resolution=hour&pair=ltc-usd&market=btc-e

Look at the volume.  Around 250k LTC each, or around $20,000 in USD.

Why would anyone do that and take the huge loss from buying high and then selling low?

I have also noticed that as the BTC price has been falling over the last few days, btc-e always led the decline, with mtgox trailing (perhaps as arbitration bots evened things out).

Something seems fishy here.  I'm not quite declaring that btc-e is hacked yet, but it's kind of looking that way to me.
28  Economy / Currency exchange / [resolved] Bitinstant.com is offline, anyone know why? on: October 26, 2012, 05:15:09 PM
Edit: Looks like they're back online now.

The normal bitinstant.com site has been unavailable for at least 14 hours now.  Going to the site now just presents:

Quote from: bitinstant.com
BitInstant.com is currently down due to site revisions

All orders placed up to this point will process as normal. If you have any questions or issues feel free to contact support@bitinstant.com or call 716-712-4846

I came across this bit on IRC describing how Roger Ver, the marketing director of bitinstant is currently stuck in immigration holding in Macau.  I don't know if it has any bearing on the site being down:

29  Economy / Marketplace / Perl CGI script for displaying dynamic BTC price images based on mtgox rate on: April 24, 2011, 04:31:12 AM
# What: This CGI script will:
#   * Accept a single parameter: 'usd_value'.
#   * Fetch the current exchange rate for USD vs BTC from mtgox.
#   * Calculate an amount of BTC to equal the value of the USD input.
#   * Return that value, rendered as a PNG image, normalized to 2 decimal places.
#
# Why:   Some people would like to advetrise goods for sale online and accept BTC as payment, yet want to base their pricing on USD currency.
#      To continually update BTC prices as the rate of exchange varies can be a chore.
#      With this script hosted on a web server, an advertiser can embed a reference to the script URL as an image, with their USD price target as a parameter.
#      A PNG image showing the appropriate value will be dynamically generated for each viewer, based on the current mtgox exchange rate.

I hope this is useful.

I would host it myself for people to use, but I'm having some trouble with my web host, and have been unable to install libgd onto it.

To use the script, you will need to have the perl modules CGI, LWP, JSON, and GD installed.  You will also need to have libgd installed.

Install libgd first.  I was able to install it on Ubuntu 10.04 using:

sudo apt-get install libgd2-xpm-dev

Then install the perl modules:

sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install CGI, LWP, JSON, GD'

It will probably want to install some other modules that these depend on.

Here is the script:
http://www.illumina23.com/usd2btc/1.0/usd2btc.pl

If the script fails to execute giving 500 Internal Server Error, try executing it from the shell and see if you receive an error message:

$ ./usd2btc.pl
