261  Other / Beginners & Help / Bitcoin Rewards From Mining - Still Economically Viable? on: June 06, 2018, 12:41:35 AM
So the question is with so many people all over the world mining Bitcoin especially those with Bitmain type miners and farms, apart from the pool operators who continue to benefit, is the share received viable for others to mine Bitcoin when keeping electricity, time and effort in mind?

263  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / US Government Opens Criminal Probe into Bitcoin Price Manipulation on: June 03, 2018, 09:40:58 PM
https://www.ccn.com/us-government-criminal-probe-bitcoin-price-manipulation/

"The United States’ Justice Department has reportedly opened a criminal investigation into possible market manipulation of prices of cryptocurrencies including bitcoin by traders.

Citing sources familiar with the probe, Bloomberg is reporting that the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is working alongside the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the markets regulator, to focus on illegal trading activities in cryptocurrency markets.

Specifically, the investigation is narrowing in on ‘spoofing’, a form of market manipulation wherein traders enter a flurry of false orders to deceive other market participants into buying or selling, as well as “wash trading” – wherein traders sells and buys with themselves to purport heightened market activity in order to stroke confidence among other investors and lure them into the market.

The investigation is said to be in its ‘early stages’ with prosecutors reportedly looking into a cryptocurrency trading markets including that of bitcoin and ethereum’s ether token."

Maybe some "big" players have to look over their shoulder just in case the long arm of the US law agencies want to have a word with them Smiley
264  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Wallet Type Percentages on: June 03, 2018, 10:48:40 AM
Of all the wallets out there does anybody know the percentage of users for Bitcoin wallet type? Curious to know the breakdown.

https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet
What percentage of users are using for example Bitcoin Core, Electrum, Armory etc and which percentage are using smartphone wallets over PC such as Arcbit and Airbitz?
265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Roger Ver Apology Video - Give Him Some Credit Please on: June 01, 2018, 04:04:20 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8uNkcvtRtA

You  have to admit that it was actually a big step for Ver to come forward and apologise for his conduct during the infamous "Rage Video". We all know he did not have to do it but it was a step in the right direction. Personally I think it falls short because there is less apologising and more blaming the other party going on but nevertheless he stated why aspects of that interview got to him and he lost his temper.

Now when it comes to Ver and what people perceive as his failed attempt to take over Bitcoin and his current attempt to disrupt Bitcoin by trying to conflate it with Bitcoin Cash, I am with the majority in that what he has done and what he is doing is wrong but when someone tries to make some amends it should be appreciated and accepted by the community. Sure, his apology was all about his conduct during the Rage Interview and not about him creating confusion with his bitcoin.com domain but that might be a start, an avenue to a new beginning which might result in Ver being welcomed back to the community with open arms as long as he changes slowly but surely towards helping Bitcoin while still keeping and promoting his Bitcoin Cash.

Though Bitcoin is king and will remain for many years to come the truth is Bitcoin would be a little stronger having Ver advocating it and promoting it. Bitcoin will go on and move forward regardless of whether Ver is on its side or not but having someone with his profile and history (the positive parts) to promote Bitcoin will only be a good move. This morning I spent an hour or so looking at his posts from when as a newbie here. There was no indication at that time that he would be so disliked in the community because he was so helpful promoting Bitcoin with billboards and radio ads that he paid for, surely that counts for something.

Something obviously went wrong in the thinking and psyche of Ver which was the reason why he began to have a dislike of Bitcoin. If there is any way to get Ver back on side then it will be a win-win situation all round.

Does anybody know the actual specific grievances Ver has with the Bitcoin developers apart from fees, transaction times and block size?
266  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / MtGox wallets with thousands of BTC inside on: May 30, 2018, 10:52:56 PM

https://bitinfocharts.com/bitcoin/address/1PxGTuJzDx1ceFHx4Z5CHaWuhiPBNovmZD

What does the information in the link mean? If those BTC are still sitting there then why were they not seized by the police and distributed between those people that were scammed?

There are so many wallets listed as belonging to MtGox, why are balances still sitting on them?
267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / thebitcoincore.org (BTCC) is the new bitcoincash.org (BCH) on: May 30, 2018, 09:20:34 AM
With 1TB blocks it seems they have done to Ver what Ver tried to do with Bitcoin but without having the bitcoincash.com domain  Grin

https://hype.codes/coingeekcom-funds-eu36-mln-scale-bch-1-tb-blocks

"CoinGeek.com, the cryptocurrency media outlet and blockchain company, announced on Monday that it is funding of up to 3.6 million Euro to support Terab, an open source initiative that will solve a key technical issue to enable the Bitcoin Cash chain to massively scale to terabyte size blocks and 7 million transactions per second. The Terab project will be managed by Lokad, the French quantitative supply chain technology provider, and will receive technical support from nChain, the blockchain research & development specialist."

Does that mean we can start calling BTCC the real BCH Bitcoin Cash as long as Ver keeps calling Bitcoin Cash the real Bitcoin?
268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ripple enthusiast with $1 billion in XRP dies - nobody has keys/passwords ! on: May 28, 2018, 11:24:24 PM
Matthew Mellon was a man with a reported $1 billion of Ripple (XRP). Sadly he died but nobody from his attorney to his friends to his family are in possession of his keys or passwords to access his crypto:
https://www.tweaktown.com/news/62046/ripple-enthusiast-1-billion-xrp-dies-unexpectedly/index.html

What do you think is the best way to ensure you can leave your crypto-assets behind for your family in the event of your death BUT not let anybody have access to those crypto-assets while you are alive?
269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Newbies Note: Wu Jihan + Roger Ver Collaboration = Bitcoin Cash on: May 09, 2018, 10:55:07 PM
Wu along with Ver are main players in Bitcoin Cash but is the heading of the thread correct? "Wu Jihan + Roger Ver Collaboration = Bitcoin Cash". Should Zhouer or others be added to that list?

Newbies, I hope you find at least some of the information here useful.

Wu is part owner of Bitmain and according to some reports Bitmain miners (antminer and other brands) are involved in producing 70% of all Bitcoins and according to other reports his Antpool holds the largest hashrate distribution amongst mining pools and currently mines 16.4% of all Bitcoin blocks. Believe what you will. Some reports cited Wu saying he swaps ALL his mined Bitcoins for Bcash/Bitcoin Cash because he does not believe in Bitcoin (though very happy to mine it and trade it).

Ver is an early investor who purchased some Bitcoin in 2011 and then some more and then got rich. Then he invested in some startups and got more rich. Then he invested in some altcoins and got even more rich. Then he invested in creating Bitcoin Cash because he could not influence the way forward for Bitcoin and in the process of the fork added multi-millions of dollars US or more to his already rich status. Some time back when the Bitcoin team registered the domain bitcoin.org they should have added bitcoin.com too but Ver registered it after he got involved in Bitcoin and that website has conflicting and confusing information on it referring to Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin, BCH, BTC and whatever else.

So why did they make Bcash? Well, both of these Bitcoin speculating fortunate-to-be-at-the-right-place-at-the-right-time people are extremely wealthy thanks to Bitcoin. They would be nowhere if it were not for the innovation that is Bitcoin. They are now saying the fork called Bcash or Bitcoin cash is the real Bitcoin and the bitcoin.com domain (registered by Ver) is pushing that view. There are theories as to why but in most opinions all views and road lead to greed/money/power/control in one aspect or another.

So newbies, just to make it clear, Bitcoin is Bitcoin and there is only one Bitcoin (bitcoin.org). Everything else is a fork or derivative of Bitcoin

Bitcoin Atom is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Cash is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Dark is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Diamond is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Fast is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin God is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Gold is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Green is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Interest is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Planet is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Plus is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Private is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Scrypt is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin X is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Z is not Bitcoin

If you buy BTC/Bitcoin then you need to have the appropriate wallet for it.
If you buy BCH/Bcash/Bitcoin Cash then you need to have the appropriate wallet for it.

bitcoin.org = bitcoin
bitcoin.com = bcash

Goldren Rule:
BCH is not Bitcoin
Bitcoin Cash is not Bitcoin
Bcash is not Bitcoin

BTC is Bitcoin
270  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum Dash 2.9.4 - How to Install on Ubuntu? on: May 09, 2018, 09:31:36 AM
Does anyone have a step by step instruction list of how to install electrum-dash on Ubuntu server or any other OS?

https://electrum.dash.org/
https://github.com/akhavr/electrum-dash

Electrum Dash runs on python2 and older software so not all of the dependencies are downloading. I cannot find a workaround.

Getting an Electrum Dash desktop wallet for Windows 10 is not a problem it works fine but trying to install it on Ubuntu using sudo commands is just not working.

Does anyone have any ideas to get this working on Ubuntu server or any other OS??
271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin/Crypto Wallet Protection Against Hacking: Seeds and Private Keys on: May 07, 2018, 11:06:38 AM
How safe are your Bitcoins and other crypto? I see two types of problems, one being wallets on devices and one being accessibility from online websites.

If someone has access your device then hacking your wallets is difficult but very much possible.

Dictionary
A dictionary attack is the simplest and fastest password cracking attack. To put it simply, it just runs through a dictionary of words trying each one of them to see if they work. Although such an approach would seem impractical to do manually, computers can do this very fast and run through millions of words in a few hours. This should usually be your first approach to attacking any password, and in some cases, it can prove successful in mere minutes

Rainbow Table
Most modern systems now store passwords in a hash. This means that even if you can get to the area or file that stores the password, what you get is an encrypted password. One approach to cracking this encryption is to take dictionary file and hash each word and compare it to the hashed password. This is very time- and CPU-intensive. A faster approach is to take a table with all the words in the dictionary already hashed and compare the hash from the password file to your list of hashes. If there is a match, you now know the password

Brute Force
Brute force is the most time consuming approach to password cracking. It should always be your last resort. Brute force password cracking attempts all possibilities of all the letters, number, special characters that might be combined for a password and attempts them. As you might expect, the more computing horsepower you have, the more successful you will be with this approach

Hybrid
A hybrid password attack is one that uses a combination of dictionary words with special characters, numbers, etc. Often these hybrid attacks use a combination of dictionary words with numbers appending and prepending them, and replacing letters with numbers and special characters. For instance, a dictionary attack would look for the word "password", but a hybrid attack might look for "p@$$w0rd123"

There are so many softwares out there that try to crack passwords. If someone has a wallet that can be accessed via a seed or private key then that too can be very problematic no matter how unlikely. For example, if you have an Ethereum private key you can go to myetherwallet.com and access funds. If you do not have a private key however low the chances of success it is possible to use the Brute Force attack to try to get access. That same Brute Force style attack can be used with so many different types of seed related online and offline wallets.

No matter how you secure your crypto whether using hardware wallets such as Ledger, Trezor or Keepkey or using Offline Paper Wallets or using Online Web Wallets or using Desktop Wallets or anything else, the problem is your crypto is only safe as long as nobody has your private keys.

How do you keep your crypto safe and do you feel more could be done to keep them safer?

272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Spot the Newbie Problems: Bitcoin or Not? on: May 05, 2018, 10:08:59 PM

So, some newbies go to bitcoin.com and see BTC and BCH plastered all over the website.

In some places on the bitcoin.com website the words "Bitcoin" and letters "BCH" are conflated, in other places they are not. In some places mentions specific to "Bitcoin" are being made and in other places "Bitcoin" and "BCH" are mentioned as one and the same. In other places "Bitcoin" and "BTC" are used.

Stands to reason newbies wanting to learn about Bitcoin will go to bitcoin.org or bitcoin.com and those wanting to learn about Bitcoin Cash will go to bitcoincash.org

How are newbies supposed to navigate the disaster created by Bitcoin Cash team?
273  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ripple Labs Sued - Is this a new trend? on: May 05, 2018, 11:37:56 AM
https://coinpedia.org/news/ripple-hits-class-action-lawsuit/

Users suing crypto companies is a dangerous trend. The action against Ver and Bitcoin Cash was dropped through lack of funding but this new one againt Ripple Labs is interesting.

If this action succeeds then what will it mean for other investors holding all sorts of crypto?
274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Domain Ownership: bitcoin.com on: April 30, 2018, 02:02:54 PM
There are so many examples of how domains can be forcefully transferred to another party, here are just two:

RICHARD BRANSON: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/21/richard_branson_xxx/

FRANCE.COM: http://www.alphr.com/business/1009214/france-seize-france-com-domain

So considering Roger Ver and his bitcoin.com domain is deliberately (or otherwise) all about "Bitcoin Cash" and is not about "Bitcoin" and the downloads lead to Bitcoin Cash wallets then should the bitcoin.org team try to take the bitcoin.com domain from Ver?

Too many people are conflating Bitcoin with Bitcoin Cash when it comes to anything from bitcoin.com and even sending funds from Bitcoin Cash wallets to Bitcoin wallets and vice-versa.
275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Spam Attacks 2017 on: April 30, 2018, 09:30:31 AM
When the Bitcoin network was recently flooded with dubious and high numbers of strange transactions was there any evidence to point towards someone or some group?

During the time all this spamming was going on the case for Bitcoin Cash was being made by certain whales so it seems people concluded that maybe the people or group that wanted to create the fork might use the existing network as 'not suitable for purpose' therefore maybe they had the most to gain from the fork therefore maybe they may have been behind the spamming. One reason cited for the creation of BCH was that the network was clogged so hey presto Bitcoin Cash was justified by its creators.

I am not saying for sure who it was because I do not know but when one particular group of people stand to gain phenomenal amounts of wealth at the predicament of another then usually the ones that have most to gain are looked upon suspiciously as they are the obvious benefactors.

Was there ever any evidence pointing to those behind the spam attacks?

276  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum Bitcoin Cash "Q" Addresses on: April 29, 2018, 11:53:02 AM
So, I tested a desktop wallet and the receiving addresses start correctly with: "1" prefix

When I used the MPK to add to Ubuntu Digital Ocean all addresses on the server start incorrectly with: "Q" prefix

When I use testnet faucet I can receive BCH on "1" prefix addresses but when I use "Q" prefix addresses the transaction fails

Why is the Ubuntu server showing all addresses starting with "Q" when the same MPK desktop wallet shows all addresses starting with "1"?
277  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / YOUR TOP REQUIREMENTS FOR INVESTING IN ICOs on: April 26, 2018, 10:20:18 AM
What are the main things you look out for when investing in ICOs?

Is it the potential ROI

Is the team behind the ICO

Is it an innovative concept that would benefit others

Anything else

There are far too many ICOs these days so what are the main things you look for when you buy in to ICOs?
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Dev Needed To Generate ETH Addresses & Populate Database on: April 24, 2018, 03:19:00 PM
Price Negotiable:

I need some help please. I paid a dev to make a script for me that is bascially not working properly. I would say it is 95% functioning. We are not on talking terms so there is no chance he will fix the script and I no longer trust him. There is much more to this story but will not bore you with the details as he will no doubt dispute it.

I wanted a script that would generate ETH and XRP addresses to populate the database and then get updated with transaction details when payments are received. Unfortunately without fully testing it by making ETH testnet transactions to ensure the database gets updated, I paid him. I then asked him to make the same structure for Ripple too but he could not get it to compile properly. I ended up with a compiled file which does exactly what the Ethereum one does. It generates addresses and keys but does not get the database updated when transactions are made.

I really need to test using ETH testnet and Ripple testnet before using small amounts of real ETH and XRP to ensure it works properly. The ETH addresses are generated, the api is set to testnet, the database tables are created and everything is fine except when payments are received transaction details are not being sent to the database.

If you can help out, please post here first before PMs so others can see and warn me off if they deem you to be a scammer. No offence intended but we will negotiate a fee after I know you will not waste my time or try to scam me.

279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Previous 7 Days: Bitcoin +14.62% Bitcoin Cash +98.16% on: April 24, 2018, 10:31:06 AM
Current price:

Bitcoin: $9,271.27

Bitcoin Cash: $1,533.55

Effectively anybody who invested in Bitcoin Cash around a week ago would have doubled their investment but they would have had a ROI of 14% for Bitcoin.

Now there is a big surprise. I always link Bitcoin Cash with whales and crypto-exchanges that wanted to destroy Bitcoin so have no interest in buying Bitcoin Cash as I do not agree with the way it was created and I do not agree with the whales behind it but right now the question is what is pushing people towards investing in BCH?
280  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How To Avoid ICO Scams Such As CrazyBet on: April 21, 2018, 09:45:09 PM

https://icobench.com/ico/crazybet

https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@danipay/crazybet-ico-crowdsale

https://twitter.com/CrazyBETio

They raised over $2.5 million but the WHOLE project from start to finish was a scam. They stole images of people from online and created fake social media profiles for them and then used them in the "About Us" and "Team" pages. There was no real business or project, they duped a lot of people.

When scammers set out with a whole program of lies and deceit including using bonafide ICO and crypto promotion sites to fool investors to steal their money, it is difficult to avoid being fooled. What advice would you give to investors to protect themselves?
