61  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-10-12]Double Standards? The Coming Push for Blockchain Interoperability... on: October 12, 2016, 02:07:38 PM
Not everyone wants to copy the world's most successful blockchain.

While bitcoin's public-facing, immutable ledger has proven resilient to attacks (and a mostly reliable way to transact peer-to-peer), businesses are still looking for something else to meet their volume and privacy requirements.

Yet, this search for alternatives has prompted problems of its own. In an effort to build products that meet diverse demands, using varied and often incompatible technologies, consortia have formed to help standardize the way financial institutions and enterprises build with blockchain.

At the core of the effort is a conflict over whether numerous blockchains with different technological features might replicate the complexity and inefficiencies of the current system, or otherwise slow down innovation.

Shake is launching the open beta after a successful six-month alpha testing period. Famously, the test saw BitGo engineer Mason Borda order a Tesla Model 3 using a virtual Shake card for the deposit.

The Canadian company currently offers apps for Android and iOS. Users with NFC-enabled phones can also use them to make tap-and-pay payments at store terminals. Those without can still use the apps to create “virtual cards”. Still others can use the Shake website to create cards without any mobile device at all.

(Reuters) — The technology behind the controversial bitcoin electronic currency could lead to sweeping improvements in how financial transactions are carried out worldwide, Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard said on Friday.

But only if it can be safeguarded from hackers and terrorists, and not grind to a halt in a crisis.

Those assurances may still be years away, Brainard said, though the Fed is closely tracking the evolution of so-called blockchain systems, and sees it as “the most significant development in many years” in how financial assets trade hands.

“We recognize the potential of distributed ledger technology, or blockchain, to transform the way financial market participants transfer, store, and maintain ownership,” Brainard said at the Institute of International Finance annual meeting. At the same time, “we want to maintain public confidence.”

Genesis Mining, a Bitcoin cloud mining provider, sent Bitcoin to space. As a part of its promotional campaign, the company conducted two successful Bitcoin transactions from the earth’s surface to somewhere 20 and 34 kilometres up in the sky, respectively.

Genesis Mining’s “To the Moon!” campaign saw the company sending a 3D model of Bitcoin and a Bitcoin paper wallet to space on a weather balloon. Genesis Mining has recorded the journey using a GoPro camera placed inside a Styrofoam box. The camera was focused on the Bitcoin 3D model with paper wallet address written on the other side.

The meteorological weather balloon with Bitcoin payload was launched from an unknown place in the United Kingdom. Once the weather balloon attained an altitude of 20 kilometers (Armstrong Limit), the ground team from Genesis Mining reportedly made the first transaction to the paper wallet from their mobile device. After almost 16 hours, the team sent another transaction to the paper wallet now at a maximum altitude of 34 kilometers. (view transactions on blockchain)

Marco Streng, in an interview with a tech magazine Hacked explained that the transaction to space symbolizes the phrase “to the moon!” once used in reference to the rising Bitcoin price. He was also quoted by the magazine saying,

“As cryptocurrencies grow in popularity it’s important to remember that they are the most secure form of currency out there, and by demonstrating how this transaction can be seen on the blockchain, we make it clear that no matter how far bitcoin goes, it’s always secure.”

This one's named HDDCryptor (or Mamba), and has been around since January 2016, according to a Bleeping Computer forum topic where users reported their infections.

Technically, HDDCryptor was around before the overhyped Petya, and later Satana ransomware families, which got a lot more media attention, and behaved in the same way, by rewriting the MBR and preventing the PC from booting.
"New wave of HDDCryptor infections"

Based on available reports, it appears that a recent malware distribution campaign has been delivering a new version of HDDCryptor to users around the world.

Using a brainwallet has one advantage and quite a few disadvantages. The upside is how there is no software to trust when it comes to generating mnemonic recovery seeds for addresses. Users do so from memory, by using long strings or sentences that are not overly complicated to remember. This is also the fatal weakness of brainwallets, as humans tend to get sloppy when it comes to passwords, passphrases, and security.

Thankfully, the number of Bitcoin brainwallets is relatively small compared to the overall numbers. But that is not keeping researchers from trying to crack these wallets. Brainflayer is a tool often used for this type of purpose, and the tool has undergone several upgrades so far. With a 215% speed increase over the past year, the tool is hammering away at testing private keys.

The European Commission's war on Bitcoin continues as EU authorities announced Friday plans to create a working group at Europol to deal with digital currency money laundering operations.

Three organizations will be in charge of the group's day-to-day operations: Europol, INTERPOL, and the Basel Institute on Governance.

The working group comes as the latest phase in a plan set in motion last autumn, after the Paris terrorist attacks from November 13, 2015.

A steady week in bitcoin preceded a drop of almost 5% overnight. The Bitcoin price was bullish the entire week, starting at $609, but ends the week at $602. 80% of Bitcoin trading volume is in CNY, followed by 11% in JPY. USD is 3rd with 5.6%. More detailed information can be found in the Bitcoin technical analysis.

In Bitcoin news; Deloitte, the largest of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms, unveiled the company's first Bitcoin ATM. The machine is operating in their Toronto office, where there is no regulation for BTM machine owners or manufacturers as they are not considered money transmitters. New BTM’s are being installed globally at a rate of 1.29 per day.

The SWIFT Institute released a Bitcoin report in which they assessed whether the global financial community is accepting Bitcoin as a valid currency. SWIFT found that a third of all the Bitcoins are held by investors and only a small minority use it as a medium of exchange. As an investment, however, it offers diversification since there is no correlation between Bitcoin and traditional asset classes.

There has been a flurry in recent days of activity about blockchains among the graybeards of the financial world, those who ponder the Really Big Picture and who have the ear of important regulators.

Let us start from the beginning. What is a blockchain? It is a chronological, virtual, and disseminated ledger that covers a history of transactions for a single unit of account. The term arose in the world of bitcoins specifically and alternative currency in general, where a “bitcoin” is a cyber spatial fact that incorporates its own history, going back to the moment when it was “mined.” (For now, let’s leave out of discussion the issue of how mining/creation works.)

A London-based start-up said on Wednesday it would launch the first fund to track an index of digital currencies such as bitcoin in the coming weeks. DLT Financial said it hopes the tracker fund will make such currencies a more attractive investment asset class.

The new company was spun out of fintech start-up Tramonex, which earlier this year received a 250,000 pound ($333,000) grant from the government to develop a new prototype for currency settlements using the technology that underpins bitcoin.

Brazil is the world’s seventh-largest economy with a population of 207.8 million and GDP of US$1.775 trillion in 2015. An independent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), published in August, shows a thriving payment cards market in Brazil. Approximately 40% of adults held a bank-issued debit card in 2014, with a transaction volume of US$109 billion. 35% of the adult population held a Credit Card, generating US$272 billion in transactions.

However, settlement times are abnormally slow in the Brazilian market. “The average settlement period for credit card transactions in Brazil is D + 28,” PwC wrote, indicating the number of days it takes for banks to internally settle each payment. In most western markets it only takes two days, prompting the Central Bank of Brazil to ask the Brazilian Association of Credit Card Companies to formalise the fundamentals of the local model that would justify the existing settlement period and evaluate a potential change.

In an ideal scenario, the education sector works together with the industries to ensure a balance between the skilled workforce and job opportunities. But it is not always the case, especially when it comes to digital currency technology. The mismatch between job and education sector has led to many professionals and students registering for various online courses on Bitcoin and blockchain technology.

At present, there are only a handful of universities offering professional courses on these topics. But thankfully, there are few online course platforms that allow people to learn the much-required skills so that they can benefit from the increasing requirement of blockchain professionals in banking, financial and IT institutions.

No LocalBitcoins Access For Russian Users

This news comes on the heels of Russia announcing their plans not to ban Bitcoin entirely. While the country is not openly embracing cryptocurrency, they want to keep a somewhat open mind. Blocking platforms such as LocalBitcoins contradicts those messages entirely. Moreover, with WebMoney announcing their plans to accept Bitcoin, blocking access to LocalBitcoins seems even stranger.

The decision to block LocalBitcoins was made on July 5th of 2016, albeit it did not go into effect until recently. Most of the internet providers in the country have adhered to this new ruling and blocked the site completely. It is expected the remaining ISPs will apply these measures in the coming days.

Now that cryptocurrency will not be subject to legal punishment in Russia, it is impossible to tell what the future will hold. These conflicting messages will not do Bitcoin adoption in the country any favors. Then again, cryptocurrency adoption does not necessarily hinge on governments playing nice.

It is not the first a country decides to take action against LocalBitcoins. Over a year ago, the company had to halt services in Germany as well. Restricting access to the website by the government is a whole different matter, though. For now, the company has not responded to this decision.

The UK Economy Continues Its Hibernation

Albeit it is still a bit early to gauge the full ramifications of the Brexit, things continue to look bleak in the UK. With the status of “major trading nation” on the line, a wake-up call will need to take place soon. Liam Fox, the International Trade Secretary, paints a very visual and worrisome picture for local companies.

Although Fox was for Britain leaving the EU, the outcome so far is relatively disappointing, in his opinion. Forging new trading relationships should be a top priority yet very little efforts are undertaken. In fact, it appears the local enterprises are resting on their laurels a bit, while the time for action is now.

The report, Micro Gold: Assessing the Use Case of DLT and Physical Gold, determined that the blockchain could transform the way gold is utilized as a form of currency, delivering the benefits associated with bitcoin.

According to senior analyst in Celent’s securities and investment practice, John Dwyer, a currency needs to have three qualities, reports EuroMoney. These are a store of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account for valuing goods and services.

Apple has announced that the iPhone 7 will enable bitcoin payments and hints that Ethereum may be next. One of the phone’s apps for its growing messaging system will be Circle, a peer-to-peer payment program that utilizes bitcoin along with traditional fiat currencies.

The announcement came shortly before the bitcoin price endured another impressive spike. Now sitting past $620, analysts are projecting that bitcoin is again rising to $680, and will do so without strain. The addition of bitcoin to the phone is also slated to increase usage throughout certain parts of the world, including China.

The company has enabled Bitcoin purchases through their website, for now, the minimum amount of bitcoins to be purchased stands at the $50 mark. Taking into account that the minimum wage in Venezuela is hovering the $50 per month mark one can realize that not everyone will be able to use Xapo’s services. However, users will enjoy the security and easy of mind that comes when dealing directly with a multi-million dollar Bitcoin startup can offer.

Xapo has opened a bank account with Banesco, the leading privately-owned Bank in Venezuela (most of the financial institutions were seized and nationalized by the government). Users will be able to send Fiat from any bank in the country to make deposits, a standard fiat wire takes about 1-2 business days to complete in Venezuela.

79  Bitcoin / Press / [2016-9-10]Apple Seems to Have Changed it’s Mind About Crypto-Currency After All on: September 10, 2016, 04:07:47 AM
Apple’s iOS 10 update includes Circle in its iMessages messaging application.

In an attempt to keep up with competitor’s chat applications, Apple has given developers the go ahead t integrate Circle, the bitcoin payment platform into iMessages in the upcoming update. This shows that Apple has realized that the modernization of its products are going to have to include cryptocurrency in some way.

Apple has shown us that they haven’t been a big fan of the unavoidable cryptocurrency integration. One example is when Apple asked Jaxx Blockchain Wallet to remove Dash support from their iOS app. They also blocked bitcoin applications from the store, only to allow them later down the road.  Ethereum wallet apps were treated the same way earlier this year.

This integration of Circle as a third party to iMessages is expected to allow users to execute instant transactions from within the chat application. CEO of Circle Financial released this statement:
“Integration of Circle into iMessages reduces friction…There’s a hurdle to have to install a smartphone app so that I can pay my buddy and all the inputting and setup. To do it all within the iMessages app is a lot easier.”

The price of bitcoin rose close to 10% this week, pushing higher as bullish market sentiment and low liquidity created an ideal environment for gains.

The digital currency enjoyed notable increases during the week, surpassing $600 on Sunday, 4th September, while largely avoiding any significant pullbacks or corrections.

Sentiment is so strong "players are not willing to bet against the rise of BTC/USD," according to Petar Zivkovkski, director of operations for Whaleclub.
