Bitcoin / Press / [2014-07-11] Bidding on Bitcoin
|
on: July 12, 2014, 04:17:54 AM
|
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/currency/2014/07/bidding-on-bitcoin.htmlAn old book that seems prophetic regarding bitcoin is “Denationalisation of Money,” published in 1976 by the Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedrich Hayek. Hayek advocated for multiple competing currencies, which would be independent from governments, rather than hundreds of national currencies. Over time, he wrote, “the appearance and increasing use of the new currencies would, of course, decrease the demand for the existing national ones.”

Economy / Scam Accusations / Class Action Lawsuit Opportunity Against Tradefortress, Coinlenders, Inputs.io
|
on: November 24, 2013, 07:04:49 PM
|
Below is an email from an attorney in Sydney who I found through on online search so I cannot personally vouch for him or his law firm although his resume looks respectible. Date: Fri, 22 Nov 2013 17:36:54 +1100 Subject: RE: Action Required:
Dear [dwdoc]: Thank you for your email. Having regard to the cost of pursuing a claim for USD 100,000 or so in this jurisdiction (which, frankly, would be out of all proportion to the amount in dispute as commercial litigation is very expensive here), I think that it would be much better to explore the possibility of bringing a class action together with other complainants from the bitcoin community. Although there are differences, class actions work in Australia in a way which is broadly similar to how they work in the USA. I should also mention that lawyers in this jurisdiction are prohibited by law from acting on a contingency fee basis (i.e. to enter into a costs agreement whereby the amount payable to the law practice was calculated by reference to the amount of any award or settlement that may be recovered in any proceedings to which the agreement related). However, some firms in this jurisdiction (ours not being one) are content to act on a “no win, no fee” basis. Class actions here are often financed by litigation funders, which will pay all of the costs of the action but will expect a “success fee” which is typically between 25% and 45% of what is recovered. The leading Australian litigation funder is IMF: http://www.imf.com.au/ We know the senior personnel at IMF (including their Chairman and Managing Director) very well and we could facilitate an introduction if you were able to assemble sufficient other complainants to get a class action together. In that regard, one would normally need at least 7 plaintiffs in order to commence a class action but IMF operates at the big end of the market and is generally interested only in claims worth $5 million or more. There may, however, be other litigation funders who would be interested. Regards, EDIT: Attorney has asked me to remove public display of his contact information at this early stage until level of interest is determined. PM me for details if desired.Thoughts? Alternatives? If this lawsuit is an option for you then please alert gaston909 or post here. He is keeping track of CL balances due.

Bitcoin / Hardware / KNCminer 48 hour controller board slogan challenge (ENDED)
|
on: August 27, 2013, 03:45:26 PM
|
Competition time!
We have a new challenge for you. We require a slogan for our controller board and we have 48 hours to make up our minds. You may remember we made a couple of minor mishaps with our Mars board. On our original Mars PCBs we printed: Bitcoins make the world go around! (Grammer is not our area of expertise, chip design is). So we have chosen to open this part of the design process to those following us on this forum. This is your chance to be immortalised in Bitcoin tech history. Please design the phrase you wish to see. There is still a space for one sentence on our boards. The 48 hours start now. Competition ends at 5.30pm (local time). We will decide the winning entrant which will then be seen on all our hardware; Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
Thanks,
KnCMiner team.
Timer removed. End time: 2013-08-29+10:30:00

Economy / Scam Accusations / DANISH IS A SCAMMER WANTED BY THE US POSTAL SERVICE
|
on: August 13, 2013, 05:56:46 AM
|
Unfortunately looks like there is another big scammer: this one (danish) claiming to sell USB block erupters. He accepts bitcoin payment and sends you a tracking number. Then you get some miners (not the correct number in my case) from ebay sellers paid for by a dummy or hijacked paypal acount. Please see the 2 pm's from Plesk below (Post Office Police!): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=49919https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=264543.msg2921913#msg2921913Hey. I'm the seller from Eagan, MN.. "augiekid". You emailed me. I also replied to your email. When you mentioned "danish" I was immediately suspicious since I got screwed by somebody with the same name a month ago. I looked up the thread on bitcointalk.
Yes I sent you those 3 erupters and the purchase came through and looked completely legitimate - verified shipping address and all. Though the payer is unregistered w/ paypal. maybe a bit strange. Somehow your address made it into the verified address spot. This guy is good.
I was screwed on eBay a month back by a guy named "Danish Javed" ? connection? hmm
If you want to talk on phone, you can call me tonight.
Otherwise, I can post in the thread with what I know. I hate to see all these people w/ BTC lost =(
Do you have a link to the thread of the prior scam? I want to alert the moderators (Theymos, etc.). How were you paid?
I wasn't scammed thru bitcointalk. It was an eBay purchased and I shipped to a guy named "Danish Javed" in CT, USA. The package was intercepted by the US Postal Inspection Service and held. It's been 1.5 months and I may finally get it back this week now that Paypal revoked my money. I was paid thru paypal originally but when the chargeback came thru ($800+ dollars!) Paypal didn't cover me under seller protection because the package didn't get delivered - was intercepted by US Postal inspection service! I got called by the US Postal Inspection Service (Basically the Post Office Police) and asked all kinds of legal questions about my involvement with this "Danish" who apparently is wanted for mail fraud / scamming. I couldn't answer them much, I just had the name/address because that was what paypal told me to ship to.
