1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why Cypherpunk Witches Love Bitcoin on: February 10, 2020, 09:20:00 PM
Claire Gallant, an ethereum fan who founded the Future Witch Facebook group, along with a corresponding art installation to fundraise for the crypto research startup Open Privacy, said she sees many similarities between cypherpunk values and witchcraft. (Open Privacy founder Sarah Jamie Lewis cheekily refers to herself as a cyberpunk witch on Twitter.)

“I think witchcraft and crypto are deeply involved with each other,” Gallant said.

After all, Gallant said, technology is “a little bit magic to us,” something that is spoken (and coded) into existence. Beyond that, cryptocurrency can enhance witches’ power by letting them transact beyond the grasp of restrictive mainstream commerce platforms.

2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin’s Lighting ‘Torch’ Reignites, Blazes Through 38 Countries in 3 Days on: January 22, 2020, 10:36:50 PM
Bitcoin's lightning torch is back, and it's zipped through at least 38 countries already.

The torch is a digital game first ignited in January 2019 by pseudonymous bitcoin enthusiast Hodlonaut, known for his Twitter avatar of a cat in a spacesuit. Each "torchbearer" sends a tiny amount of bitcoin to the next. A key rule is to add a little bit more money to the payment each time it moves to someone new.

The goal is to highlight the speed and global nature of the lightning network, a payment technology that could solve or at least greatly ease some of bitcoin's most critical problems. Started on a whim for fun, the torch became a global event, even carried by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, showing how frictionless and indifferent to borders the form of payment is compared to legacy methods like Visa and Paypal.

On Sunday, Hodlonaut lit the torch for the second time, in what he described as a "spur-of-the-moment decision." Since then, many enthusiasts have been posting lightning "invoices" on Twitter to which the torchbearer can send the next lightning payment.

7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Ex-Trump Advisor Steve Bannon: ‘Global Populist Revolt’ Helps Crypto on: August 04, 2019, 07:56:15 PM
Steve Bannon, former Trump staffer and head of conservative news site Breitbart, said cryptocurrencies “have a big future” due to the current geopolitical atmosphere.

think they could be a very important part going forward particularly in this global populist revolt,” Bannon said.

Echoing Trump, Bannon said the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy has been too tight and that cryptocurrencies present a meaningful alternative to fiat-based investments.

When asked about Facebook’s digital currency project Libra, Bannon said it will not find friends in the banking community.

“The central banks and actually the banking community want to get in and regulate crypto. They want to still stick to fiat currency,” he said on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

The development of alternative payment rails like Libra presents a challenge to the dollar’s reserve currency status.
