"Pakistan mob kills woman, girls, over 'blasphemous' Facebook post"

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/28/us-pakistan-islam-murder-idUSKBN0FX0GF20140728

"(Reuters) - A Pakistani mob killed a woman member of a religious sect and two of her granddaughters after a sect member was accused of posting blasphemous material on Facebook, police said Monday, the latest instance of growing violence against minorities.

The dead, including a seven-year-old girl and her baby sister, were Ahmadis, who consider themselves Muslim but believe in a prophet after Mohammed. A 1984 Pakistani law declared them non-Muslims and many Pakistanis consider them heretics.

Police said the late Sunday violence in the town of Gujranwala, 220 km (140 miles) southeast of the capital, Islamabad, started with an altercation between young men, one of whom was an Ahmadi accused of posting "objectionable material".

"Later, a crowd of 150 people came to the police station demanding the registration of a blasphemy case against the accused," said one police officer who declined to be identified.

"As police were negotiating with the crowd, another mob attacked and started burning the houses of Ahmadis."

The youth accused of making the Facebook post had not been injured, he said.

Resident Munawar Ahmed, 60, said he drove terrified neighbors to safety as the mob attacked.

"The attackers were looting and plundering, taking away fans and whatever valuables they could get hold of and dragging furniture into the road and setting fire to it... Some were continuously firing into the air," he said. "A lot of policemen arrived but they stayed on the sidelines and didn't intervene," he said.

The police officer said they had tried to stop the mob.

Salim ud Din, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community, said it was the worst attack on the community since simultaneous attacks on Ahmadi places of worship killed 86 Ahmadis four years ago.

Under Pakistani law, Ahmadis are banned from using Muslim greetings, saying Muslim prayers or referring to his place of worship as a mosque.

Accusations of blasphemy are rocketing in Pakistan, from one in 2011 to at least 68 last year, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. About 100 people have been accused of blasphemy this year.

Human rights workers say the accusations are increasingly used to settle personal vendettas or to grab the property of the accused.

Keep Calm: The Truth About The Huge Solar Flare That Just Missed Earth

Last night, a friend asked me if I had written about the huge solar flare that nearly converted all of us to an Amish lifestyle. It was a story I was familiar with, but I thought it was old news. After all, the huge Coronal Mass Ejection that could have wreaked havoc on our electric grid and other infrastructure had Earth been in its path actually occurred in 2012, and had been thoroughly covered here on Forbes and elsewhere months ago.

Yet today I was greeted with a new round of headlines about the storm, only this time far more hyperbolic or just flat wrong, like this one from news.com.au via the New York Post: “Solar Flare Nearly Destroyed Earth 2 Years Ago: NASA.”  Or the more sinister: “NASA Reveals 2012 Secret;” or the misleading Guardian thread: “What Have You Done With Your Life Since A 2012 Solar Storm Nearly Wiped Us Out.”

Um… what? Continue beyond the blatantly wrong headlines on these, and you’ll typically find the real story, which does not involve an extinction-level planet baking that we just missed. A near total collapse of all infrastructure that relies on the electrical grid was the real threat, but surely there’s a big gap on the continuum of possible space weather-caused catastrophes between losing electricity and the complete destruction of the planet. (Insert snarky discussion of whether life is worth living without Twitter TWTR -1.42% here.)

For all the details on the big solar flare that almost imposed a global moratorium on selfie-sharing, check out Brid-Aine Parnell’s post from back in March, when the researchers who studied the solar storm originally published their findings. That’s right, NASA hasn’t been withholding the details of this near disaster, they’ve been out there for some time now.
EV Lacertae

What seems to be going on here is that NASA put out a press release on Wednesday rehashing the details of the 2012 flare and the research that’s been dripping out over the past year. It’s actually a great primer on space weather and the potential damage that can be done by huge coronal mass ejections, including the last time the planet was actually in the firing line. That happened over 150 years ago. By the way, that event — known as the Carrington event — did not vaporize any people,  animals or planets, but it did do damage to telegraph lines and create some epic northern lights as far south as Tahiti.

There’s no new information in the press release, so it doesn’t qualify as a revelation of a vast conspiracy to cover up the fact that the storyline of that terrible Nicolas Cage movie about a solar flare is real.

So, no, life on Earth did not nearly end in mid-2012, and NASA hasn’t been keeping it a secret, but it would probably be a good idea to work up some infrastructure contingency plans should we actually come in contact with a big solar flare sometime soon. And it would also be nice if everyone actually researched and read the stories they’re writing headlines for.

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. (AP) — Police say a toddler crashed a Jeep into an Oregon home, then ran back to his home to watch cartoons.

Authorities say the 3-year-old boy wearing only a diaper climbed into the Jeep Tuesday evening and knocked it out of gear. Witnesses say it rolled down the street, through an intersection and into the house, causing minor damage.

KPTV reports an officer found the boy on a couch watching TV as if nothing had happened.

He said his parents weren’t home and another relative was sleeping. Police cited 22-year-old Brennan Pennington for failing to supervise a child.

Year of Manufacture: 1951

Offered by its privateer owner having been on long-term loan to the Eva Peron Museum (Museo Evita) in Buenos Aires, Argentina we are delighted to offer for sale this most significant of State Limousines, that of Argentine President Juan Domingo and Eva Perón.

A great icon of popular culture as well as history, María Eva Duarte de Perón, will always be affectionately remembered as Evita. Her life story was most famously told in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita, as well as the 1996 film of the same name starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.

Eva's rise from aspiring actress to political supremo and Spiritual Leader of Argentina began in 1944, in Buenos Aires, where she met Colonel Juan Perón. The couple were married in 1945 and Juan Perón was elected President of Argentina in 1946.

During the couple's time in office, Eva became a champion of the working class as well as women in Argentina, founding the nation's first large-scale female political party, the Female Peronist Party and supporting low income families. Over the next few years she built up swathes of support, leading for calls for her to become Vice-President. Her declining health meant that she could never truly make a challenge for the Vice-Presidency and she sadly died of cancer at the age of 33 in July 1952. More than three million people lined the streets of Buenos Aires at her funeral, proving her significance and popularity.

This fabulous 1951 Cadillac served faithfully as the official state limousine of the Peron presidency and has been proudly displayed at the Museo Evita for a number of years. There are many images of the President with the car and he and Eva in the rear seats en route to a state function. The owner has decided the time has come to part with this important treasure and the concours lawn of Salon Privé where the car will be shown and accompanying Silverstone Auctions sale is the chosen outlet.

The car has recently arrived on UK shores and discovered within was a glorious jewel from one of Eva's dresses which accompanies the sale of this car. The helpful staff of Museo Evita are very kindly trying to establish which item of clothing this jewel has come from.

The opportunity to own such a unique motorcar from a very poignant period in South American history is a very special proposition and one which cannot be overlooked. We anticipate significant global interest when this Cadillac is offered under the hammer.

Interested parties should note that import duty at the prevailing rate is applicable to the purchase price of this vehicle if it remains in the EEC.

Pit Bull cares for and carries her injured Chihuahua friend to safety
Posted 5:55 pm, July 23, 2014, by Kasey Babbitt, Updated at 07:18pm, July 23,

"SAVANNAH, Ga. — Earlier this month animal control officers made a surprising discovery when they came across an unlikely pair traveling together in one Georgia neighborhood.

According to the Huffington Post, Joanie the pit bull was found carrying Chachi the Chihuahua around in her mouth inside a Savannah, Georgia, neighborhood. Officers said the Chihuahua had a badly infected eye, which the pit bull would tend to. She would put the pup down every once in a while, and lick his infected eye. Chachi seemed thankful for the attention according the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Facebook post on the pair.

“It’s not every day we get to see such devotion between two special dogs like this,” said Animal Control Officer Christina Sutherin. “They are both such sweet animals. But the relationship they share just sets them apart.”

The Chihuahua’s bad eye had to be removed, so the pit bull had been living apart from her friend while he healed, but Sutherin told the Huffington Post, the two dogs were still getting together a least once a day.

“Staff is amazed at the dedication and love these two have for one another,” said Sutherin.

Although police expected Joanie and Chachi’s owner to come forward to claim them, no one did. Recently the pair has found a new home together in Florida according to WJCL.

“Neither one seems to care about another dog they are exposed to, only each other,” said Sutherin. “They truly appear to be soul mates.”

"Plan submitted to split California into 6 states
Posted: Jul 16, 2014 4:03 PM CST Updated: Jul 16, 2014 4:18 PM CST
By George Jones - email

(RNN) - A businessman who created a proposal to break up California into separate states said he has garnered enough support to put the issue up for vote during the next statewide election.

Tim Draper, who has made billions in the technology sector, submitted 1.3 million signatures to the state capital in Sacramento on Tuesday. That's enough to put the issue on the ballot in 2016.

According to the proposal, the names of each the six states would be Jefferson, North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California and South California.

Each state would have its own capital, though it has not been proposed what those cities would be.

Draper is the major backer of the nonprofit group Six Californias.

The group is pushing the idea on the basis that the state's 38 million residents do not have adequate representation and revenue is not used efficiently.

Draper has sold the idea heavily for at least a year, but it is now picking up steam with enough support to take the next step in the political process.

"You can frame your own constitution, your own system of government, your own services, your own state bird," Draper said at a news conference Tuesday. "Social media and rating systems allow us to determine how each state can best serve its people. We'll be launching sites for each state that can help you get started, then it is up to you."

Even if the measure passes, both Congress and the California Legislature have to approve it. Among the myriad national implications are more seats in Congress and the effect on future presidential elections."

First time I've ever heard of a forum which allows the posting of the personal information of others by forum users.

Seems a day or two ago a forum member posted personal information which he thought was about me in order to attempt to impugn my intergity.

He was wide of the mark but I nevertheless complained to the appropriate moderator.

Getting no respones, I complained again and again no response.

Figuring the squeaky wheel gets the grease, I complained yet again and received this response today:

In other words, your privacy on this forum is not guarranteed by forum rules.

Any Tom, Dickwad or Harry can try to figure out who you are and post it all over the place without penalty.

Now I replied to the Mod that I would handle it, so handle I have.

I think that we all need to petition Theymos for identity protection except for proven scam accusatioins here on this forum.

What say you?
