121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BitPico throwing down against Roger Ver on: June 27, 2018, 03:38:34 PM
So while enjoying my morning coffee I was enlightened as to more of the upper echelon of BTC adopters.

I had never heard of BitPico, but it sounds like they know what they're doing, and are most likely BTC purists. This is probably why they have an issue with Ver and his attempt to make BCash the new BTC.

This group is stress testing "his" baby with a sustained 51% attack, and they aren't even hiding about it. They told him, lol.

I read this article and it discusses how they did this with the lightning network to test it's merit and see how well it addresses previous issues with network scalability. This group was apparently a driving force behind Segwit2x, and had seemingly dissapeared before giving the lightning network a good working over.

I don't think the idea is inherently malicious like other 51% attacks, except with the obvious intention of making Roger Ver cry. They are just performing due diligence for a coin that came out of nothing and was "given"/pumped to #2.

122  Local / Pilipinas / Question about Bitcoin in the Philippines [English] on: June 17, 2018, 05:02:33 PM
First sorry I do not speak Tagala.

I live in a community in Canada that hosts a large Filipino community, most of whom are working here to send money back home.

This brings me to my question. How well adopted is cryptocurrency in the Philippines? Is it easy for a local to convert say BTC, and LTC into FIAT?

I want to consult/offer the service of sending their funds home via crypto to reduce fees, and timelines with waiting.

Any insights into the system would be great.

Note: At this time I am not looking for a partner.
123  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] T9+ under warranty [Still available] on: June 06, 2018, 02:57:46 PM
I'm looking to sell my T9+ US or Canada buyer
I will also include a 100$ bitmain coupon - Expires July 31, 2018

asking .06 .047 BTC or equivalent LTC . OBO
Shipping included. Escrow accepted at buyer expense.

This unit is under warranty and currently has an issue with 1 chain not hashing. Runs at 9.1 TH/S
If you are located in the US, I will ship the item for warranty repair and then have it sent to you. Bitmain can't seem to wrap their head around this concept
If you are in Canada, I am open to offers but I will not ship it to China for repairs.

I am located in Canada, and it is not cost effective for me to ship the Miner to China for repair.

Photos will be updated tonight when I get home.

124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Double spend transactions-BTG- Confirmed on: May 24, 2018, 02:11:45 AM
So I have always heard the theory behind a 51% attack and how improbable it would be these days with BTC. However since I've been dabbling in mining some smaller lesser known coins I've seen the ease with which some of them could fall prey to an attack.

This is is a confirmed link detailing how a malicious attack has been taking place affecting exchanges on the BTG Network.

https://forum.bitcoingold.org/t/double-spend-attack-on-exchanges/1362/21

It appears that the only victims in the end are the exchanges themselves, but just because it doesn't affect your pocketbook at the moment doesn't mean it won't in the future when they raise fees.

Currently it appears they are trying to combat this by raising their confirmation requirements. If it keeps up you may see them go as high as 100.

If anyone knows more about this, feel free to drop some knowledge bombs.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/money/topstories/unlicensed-bc-bitcoin-trader-jailed-in-us-after-federal-sting/ar-AAxvxVe?li=AAgh0dA

Scrolling through today I came up on this guys story. I guess I'm a little surprised, but I am ignorant to the laws in the US.

I'm wondering is there something wrong with buying and selling BTC not using an exchange? I would have thought as long as you claimed your profits come tax time that everything would be fine.

I could understand if the only reason they went after him was because he tried to maintain "plausible deniability" in regards to where the funds had come from; but they were already investigating him at that point.

I know weird question, but does anyone know how much you could bring??

I wanted to bring a few bottles as gifts and couldn't find a definitive answer.

So I was doing my general reading through threads I've posted in this evening and I spit coffee out on my work desk reading this one.

I took out quoted posts, not relevant to my laughing
This term, "more than" is being used quite a bit about these miners, to justify it's shortcomings. To further the justification, the resident Bitmain Haters, ignore these shortcomings in a spiteful bliss. There's no changing their minds about it. 1 out of the 5 they ACTUALLY received, hashes near or slightly above spec, so it's instantaneously proven, to them, the Dragonmint is supreme. Nevermind the other 4, that have to be tinkered with, just to come close to the 1, with a efficiency loss. These consumers are oblivious, simply for the bragging rights of having this miner. <-------insert face palm here!!!

Here came the spit take

the Dragonmint is supreme.
Sure, because they use 10nm chips produced by Samsung, while Bitmain uses 16nm chips.

But I wonder why efficiency is so low -  16TH/s , comparing with Bitmain's 14Th?    10nm should have at least 60% performance over 16 mn, doesn't it?

And Shazam!!! with an understandable response.

I'd prefer you not snip my post, making it look as if I feel they are supreme. They are not and that's my point. Thank you!!!

To note Cuteman was called out by a Legendary member, who asked MODS to have a chat with him, lol. He did "apologize" on the next page; post remained unedited.  Grin Grin

Oh I see, pardon for misunderstanding  Roll Eyes

So I'm guessing people have come across things like this before, post away if you still have them. I have seen the Legendary feud/pissing/hissing matches where they regularly edit the thread title, or each others posts but this was the first lower ranking member I've seen pull this.

128  Other / Off-topic / Loss of a family pet on: May 09, 2018, 05:33:07 AM
So as this is the only online community I'm engaged in and it is vast so I thought I'd talk here.

So yesterday me and my family said good bye, to a good boy. It hit us all pretty hard, me and the wife hardest I think.

We adopted both our doggos within a month of each other a little over 10 years ago. They were hopefully friends at the Humane society but if not they developed one and became each others 4 pawed companions, when we were out, or travelling for more than a few days. We also have a kitty they adopted as their own or she adopted them, hard to say she has been with us longer.

While we did get 10 great years with Mcduff, his passing came out of nowhere; Lily our other pooch has been suffering seizures for the last 2 months, and you can see it has aged her; in both energy and demeanor. So when Mcduff began to act ill and show signs of abdominal issues, we figured he ate something he didn't agree, the vet agreed after a visit on Friday,  and pampered him throughout the weekend. Considering he has been our beast with the iron stomach forever we thought nothing of it until he stopped eating and began hiding under the deck(always a terrible sign)

So Monday morning while I was sleeping off a nightshift my wife brought him to the vet, and by Noon we had to make the uncomfortable/sad decision to euthanize our poor boy. The Vet ran bloodwork that morning and it turned out he had developed a form of diabetes and his readings were off the charts.

As I've been logging into the Forum, it does remind me how the last 6 months or so I've dedicated more and more time to my mining rigs and research. With it all still feeling pretty fresh I just wish I had taken a few extra minutes/hours to sit down and pet Mcduff.

Feel free to share your stories, or do as I did last night and drink a toast to all the animals that make our lives great
129  Other / Meta / New feature for Marketplace on: May 05, 2018, 04:41:53 AM
So every now and then I like to scroll through the Marketplace, to window shop, and ask the basic questions to prove validity of the Merchandise.

1 thing that pisses me off is when I see an Offer of goods, in a locked thread with no option to respond; sometimes a self moderated thread is just as bad.. This is generally a scam. Here is an example

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3545002.0

Now the OP covers one of my questions which would be a picture with username and date, but makes no mention of Escrow. I have not contacted them but it was an example I came across this evening.

What I would like the ability to do is link a new thread to that one, so that it stays either below or above it at all times. This way you could post a title that specifically points to that thread and has questions you want answered or the responses you receive from communications with the OP.

I get it the Forum does not actively fight against scams, but some members here chose to try and prevent this from becoming a thieves den.

And yes it won't be perfect, but only in the same sense that any troll can spam a thread anyways, or leave retaliatory feedback.
130  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Looking for resources to learn about GPU mining on: May 01, 2018, 04:16:55 PM
I'm wondering if anyone has a good resource to learn more about GPU mining commands and settings. I just got into GPU mining this year and have so much to learn I don't know everything I don't know  Tongue

I'm not looking for the generic plug and play walkthrough. I have already done that and have a rig up and operating. I have watched videos about how to OC and undervolt settings on the cards themselves, and have performed BIOS mods. I would still be open to more info about these as well.

What I would like to do is hone my skills and knowledge in regards to running different miners, playing around with commands and understanding what I'm actually doing.

Thanks in advance for anything you have.
131  Other / Meta / Blatantly selling Merit on: April 21, 2018, 06:43:27 PM
So this is likely just a scam, or they have an alt account with Merit to sell.

Either way here is the link.

User already has red trust. Not sure if this is the kinda thing that gets a permaban/nuke.

Also reported to MODS.

Let me know if there is no need for this thread I'll lock it and let it drift into oblivion.

EDIT: Fixed spelling in title
132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [crime] Thumbs up for the balls it takes, thumbs down for being a dirty thief on: April 21, 2018, 02:19:26 PM
So I wanted to talk about the new face of bitcoin crime. Sindri Thor Steffanson the face of "The Bitcoin 11"* caught my attention when it was announced he escaped prison, boarded the same flight as the prime minister of Iceland while using a fake passport. Shocked Then poof buddy is gone. I use the term escaped lightly as he pretty much just walked off the grounds of his fenceless minimum security prison; because why not.

What is super interesting is he was 1 of only 2 people that were ordered to remain in custody. Now for the part about the loot. We are used to hearing about hackers/scammers and other douchery in general; but this team was bold.

In this financial ecosystem they chose to steal the physical item: 600 miners... I have no idea what style, I would assume s9's considering the heists... yeah plural 4 total took place in December 2017 and January 2018. At the time of this post  the police do not have any leads on the equipment but are hoping the group is dumb enough to plug them in and essentially send out a beacon of electrical consumption... just like a grow op. Has anyone bought some ridiculously cheap hardware from northern Europe??  Roll Eyes

So I'm wondering does anyone know any more about this heist, parties affected, types of miners, or any other facts in general? Have your own story to add by all means post away. I myself am still just amazed at the crime itself of 4 heists before getting caught and then the escape.

*Thought of that one myself... I so witty. Tongue

Best description of original heists

The escape

EDIT: Not doing an investigation, just looking to discuss this as it interested me.
133  Other / Off-topic / [Merit Review] For Support/Troubleshooting posts - Read OP before posting on: April 20, 2018, 03:02:49 PM
My intention is to spread my 14 merits. My plan is to reward the types of posts that drew me into the forum.
I feel that Miner support and troubleshooting is an under merited segment of posts; not based on fact more an observation/feeling.

What I'm looking for

  • Posts that you made directed to a problem OP has/had
  • Posts that help OP plan out their electrical, cooling, or any other logistical issues related to mining.
  • Posts that relate to troubleshooting OS systems, new miners, monitoring.

Feel free to submit posts along these lines that aren't specifically mentioned but are inline with what has been stated

Rules/Stipulations

For the time being I will only review 1 post per submission.
Do not post within 7 days of your last submission

-The only rank that I will not be providing Merits to is Legendary.   -I will lock the thread when I run out of Merit to provide   -If I am unsure that your post is helpful I will do some research before awarding Merit.
134  Economy / Computer hardware / Canaan 8 series bundle deal 44 Miners on: April 17, 2018, 09:44:42 AM
I was just browsing through the Canaan official page and thought I would post this here for anyone looking to buy 40+ units

https://canaan.io/product/avalon-821-841-bundle-qty-40-shipping-now-100-per-thash/

What it boils down to is:      40 - 821's , 4 - 841's this includes 3 controllers as well.

I am not selling these, you will need to buy them direct from Canaan, but it is below the usual 60 unit minimum. PSU's are not included.
135  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Raven coin on Hive OS low hashrate problem on: April 01, 2018, 11:34:10 PM
I just switched over to Hive and thought it was a great time to mine Raven as well.

My problem is my 5 RX 570 cards are only pulling 430 KH/S total

Looking into it I should be able to get 5 MH/S each.
I reset my bios to stock to try and help and the improvements were minimal.

Also I am using miningpanda for the pool.
Any help?
136  Other / Meta / PSA message to all BCT accounts explaining Merit on: March 29, 2018, 10:24:23 PM
Just wondering if Theymos or another staff member can create and send a mass message to all current and future accounts explaining the Merit system.

I have seen people posting almost endlessly either through ignorance or indifference asking what is this? How does this work?

This doesn't even include all the complaining or whining about it. (It is what it is, move on)

The message really just has to encompass the original announcement by Theymos, maybe the established Do's and Dont's. Also any links deemed relevant to the subject could be included.

Side thought while typing this, for new accounts. Let's put a link in directing to the forum rules. With a twist, you know how you have to accept the terms of use on everything these days let's add that in. Not at the bottom like suckers but somewhere in the middle so that people have to actually read it.

Just to be sure it gets through to everyone we would need it to be translated for all local boards.

137  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Diet bitcoin... really? on: March 23, 2018, 01:11:54 AM
So it appears Roberto Escobar wants to revolutionise the crypto currency market. With his brand new idea of forking bitcoin. Lol

There is an article here talking about it and among other things he claims the CIA  created bitcoin and will sell all their coins and tank BTC's price in the process.

I am shocked that he would point fingers at the CIA. Roll Eyes

If nothing else it's an funny read. I guess it's easier to fork BTC than to sell tons of cocaine.

EDIT: link should work now

138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Did you stick to the HOLD philosophy on: February 06, 2018, 11:47:21 PM
I just wanted to gauge what people did and why.

If you had BTC from October 2017 or earlier, maybe 1 maybe 100 and some with more I'm sure.

Did you sell in December? With the insane rise in price which was due for a correction how many people sold at or near peak and maybe set aside some for a correction to buy back in the Dip.

I ask because with the opportunity to cash out for FIAT which still makes the world go around it seems like selling at 20 000+ (CAD) makes sense. I hear a lot of people who say HOLD and hoard essentially, and to each their own; but I find myself wondering at what point do you sell if that is your philosophy.

Maybe you didn't sell; maybe you sold a few or dumped it all.

I myself didn't have much; I had amassed a small amount that I was portioning off to HOLD, but what I was holding was instantly sold at the peak or used to buy equipment mostly because I had a feeling that it was going to be worth about 50% in the near future. The price stayed higher for longer than I though but it also fell lower than I thought. I might have been completely wrong it may have continued to rise but in the end I was happy with the decision I made. I can always mine more...well some (damn difficulty lol)
139  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] In canada - Rx580 or 1070 on: February 02, 2018, 09:51:56 AM
Hey Just thought I'd put this to the community first.

I have a line on a few RX580's already but thought maybe there is a better deal to be had in the forum.

Like the title says, I'm looking for 6 cards, preferably 8GB. If you have these available let me know what you are asking.

Not going to pay anything crazy like current ebay, newegg or amazon pricing.

Thanks in advance.
140  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Massive drop in global hashrate on: February 01, 2018, 04:44:05 AM
I was doing my daily rounds through some of the pages and noticed on my pool info that the global hashrate had dropped.
Then I looked into it and it was significant. It looks like 25% of the network hashrate just up and disappeared.

https://blockchain.info/charts/hash-rate

Not sure where it went, I'm guessing some of it has to do with the price drop and higher difficulty that some of the equipment that became profitable again might have come offline.
Then I thought that's an odd level of everyone being on the same page. It also seems really high for it to just be the next batch of Miners getting ready to be shipped out.

Not that I'm complaining it is nice to see a difficulty adjustment in the red as opposed to +20. At least for now.
