Local / Suche / [CLOSED] Suche ElePHPant (Stofftier)
|
on: March 09, 2013, 02:17:44 PM
|
Hallo!

Bitcoin / Press / 2012-04-29 nytimes.com The Post-Cash, Post-Credit-Card Economy
|
on: May 09, 2012, 09:38:43 PM
|
The Post-Cash, Post-Credit-Card Economy Somini Sengupta 2012-04-29 https://nytimes.com/2012/04/29/sunday-review/the-post-cash-post-credit-card-economy.html... A BRITISH start-up, called Blockchain, offers a free iPhone application allowing customers to use a crypto-currency called bitcoins, which users can mint on their computers. ... It is still early days for each of these companies, and as the Pew survey suggests, it is difficult to say whether they will gain widespread acceptance or freak people out — or whether, indeed, they will improve our well-being. With so much vital data in our cellphones, what happens when we lose them? Could we one day load up the cellphones of our teenage children with money for cab rides but not beer? Would cash be reserved for purchases of sex, drugs and, in repressive countries, banned books? Or just for people with bad digital reputations?

Bitcoin / Project Development / What to do in case of an attack on Bitcoin?
|
on: November 04, 2011, 09:33:03 PM
|
Suppose the Bitcoin blockchain or network is under attack (maybe because of a flaw in the protocol, a bug in the client, malicious miners, DDoS on nodes, attempts to isolate parts of the network, ...). What would be the emergency steps for counteracting the attack or mitigating the harm? Who is in charge? Have Bitcoin devs and mining pool operators (possibly others) worked out a plan on what to do in case of an emergency? Just a few ideas of what I think such a plan could cover (feel free to disregard any or all of them): - list of possible attack scenarios with rough guidelines for countermeasures
- ensure that key people have each others phone numbers and GPG keys
- decide on a voting mechanism in case of possibly controversial hot-fixes for the client
- a way to activate standby hashing power (inform cooperative owners of unused capacities)
- make sure that mining pool operators can quickly implement blockchain checkpoints
- a blueprint for a signed public announcement
- an efficient way to inform the community
- a documented format for messages over the alert system
- a secure information channel over which merchants/exchanges could be informed so that they can (automatically) suspend accepting Bitcoin payments for the time of the attack
I understand that some of those things might seem to go against Bitcoin's decentralized nature, but in case of an attack it could make a big difference for the whole Bitcoin ecosystem, if a few people know what to do and cooperate efficiently. With more and more people and businesses relying on the operation of the Bitcoin network, an emergency plan would be somewhat reassuring - especially since some attacks might require quick action to prevent major turmoil. Your thoughts?

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [POLL] How many Bitcoins did you have on mybitcoin.com?
|
on: August 03, 2011, 06:33:14 AM
|
The mybitcoin.com incident has hit many of the Bitcoin community as well as their friends and families. It could very well be the biggest theft in Bitcoin history so far, shaking the confidence of many believers in this great but still infant project.
This poll should help everyone to get a feeling for the total magnitude of the fiasco - maybe for estimating the impact on the market, maybe to help possible further investigations or maybe just to serve as a clearer warning for the future.
For discussing the incident itself, we already have enough other threads so I'd kindly ask you to keep this thread free from any "I saw it coming all along" and "It's all your own fault" type of comments.
Please feel free however to post the exact amount you lost or any other comments regarding the nature of your loss.
I myself lost a total of 24 Bitcoins spread over accounts of a few not so tech-savvy friends who I introduced to Bitcoin and set the accounts up for them. Since I'm going to reimburse them, I consider this my loss although I keep my own wallet safely encrypted and backed up on offline storage.

Local / Deutsch (German) / Erinnerung: Wiener Bitcoin Meetup am 22.07.
|
on: July 21, 2011, 03:22:06 PM
|
Hallo Leute!

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Mt. Gox: SEPA deposits offline until July 18th
|
on: July 11, 2011, 07:43:58 PM
|
Fresh from Mt. Gox: Euro deposits are currently offline until Monday 18th 2011. Deposits made this week will be processed until Friday morning. Any transfer received after Friday morning will be rejected by our bank.
A new EUR bank account will be announced on Monday 18th 2011.
If you have an urgent need of depositing funds, it is possible through our GBP account, however you will most likely lose on the currency exchange. Please check "GBP Deposit" in the menu. You can also send an international wire to Japan as we have a EUR bank account here. Please confirm the fees with your bank first.
I don't know how long this has been up there but I haven't read about it anywhere so I think it's quite new. Not sure how large the portion of EU citizens trading at Mt. Gox is, but about 6% of the leaked accounts had EU national ccTLDs emails. Based on the non-representative distribution from my personal mail contacts I'd guesstimate about 20% EU users - all having difficulty getting funds into Mt. Gox for about a week. This sure could somewhat limit the trading volume for the coming week(s). At least it made me buy somewhere else.

Economy / Trading Discussion / How long to wait for MtGox EUR withdrawal?
|
on: May 18, 2011, 08:29:26 AM
|
I would love to hear from anybody who has successfully withdrawn an USD amount from MtGox via direct deposit to an EUR bank account (SEPA zone). Normally this should take no longer than 5 bank business days as far as I've heard but it has been 7 now and still nothing received I'm starting to get worried, so please: if anybody has already done this, tell me how many days you had to wait. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
