1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Hypothetically speaking... on: July 31, 2013, 10:27:25 PM
What if it was possible to switch the entire bitcoin or even all cryptocoins power to some other use for a day? Like switching a train to a different set of tracks. Where would you choose to switch it too? What kind of damage could be done? In the wrong hands could it be the end of the world? Personally I would love to see a SETI day happen once a year or even a folding day movement to help find any cure for the thousands of diseases that need our help. Just a thought.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Coin for a Cause? on: July 30, 2013, 10:40:28 PM
Just a random thought. As much as I hate bringing one more coin into the mix :/ How about creating one that will also help finding cure? For example : http://folding.stanford.edu
That would be one way to help gain some new mainstream acceptance into the world of digital coins and get a whole new swarm of people involved. Thoughts?

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How many Coins by 2015? on: July 26, 2013, 07:31:20 AM
With the recent trend that we have all witnessed the past 6 months with new coins being popped out weekly I am curious how many one might expect to have by the end of 2014?

Will they all fight to the bitter death until a Gold, Silver and Bronze is officially adopted and we all just mine the crap out of those. Or will the coins just keep stacking and stacking constantly evolving with thousands to choose from that will certainly cause a migraine headache? Or will too many coins have been launched causing everyones promotion, support, development and hash power to be spread to thin in the end causing it all to die a slow horrible death?

IMO I see around 500 coins having been produced and chugging along by then although I really would like to see just 10 staying put that we can all decide on to finally take over the world. Your thoughts?

4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Setting up 7970 with NVIDIA motherboard? on: July 04, 2013, 06:44:10 AM
ok here it goes :

I just bought a used Sapphire 7970 and am trying to install it onto a older pc with looks to be some Nvidia fans connected to the Motherboard and maybe a chip as well. I pulled everything out of the case this time around and bought a AX1200 to get me started. I plugged the new GPU into the motherboard, attached DVI and started up just fine even with no other GPU attached. Of course it did not recognize but gave me funky desktop size until I went and installed catalyst 13.6 beta 2 as is on my other machine working AOK. Opened cgminer and everything i tried came up with HW errors so am thinking because it is a 32 bit maybe I need to go back to 12.8 and 2.7sdk and decided a uninstall of all drivers would be needed.

I then noticed a bunch of NVIDIA drivers and misc programs and thought maybe they were interfering so maybe an uninstall would do the trick on everything. Upon deleting NVIDIA and AMD drivers/catalyst i restarted and got nothing but one big black screen. no startup logo, info, nothing. I tried some other working OS hard drives and same thing with a black screen but did sound like computer might be doing something.

I then added an older NVIDIA GPU onto the 2nd x16 port along with the 7970 beside it and was able to get the computer to start back up when the DVI cable went to the NVIDIA. System then did a restore to be able to load properly. Now I am assuming because of the NVIDIA fans maybe chips, etc on the motherboard deleting all of those NVIDIA programs/drivers maybe wasnt a good idea. So upon that restore it might of patched what i deleted for the mean time? Now when I try to install any type of Catalyst it does not recognize the 7970 only the Nvidia which the monitor is connected to. If i connect DVI to 7970 I just get black screen. The 7970 fans/lights are on and moving so that is a good sign but now I am not sure where to go from here.

Should I take another drive and install with a fresh windows 7 after reformat and go from there? side note when i tried using other working OS 7 hard drives connected to NVIDIA GPU it was unable to start but the original HD would. Now I am thinking it definitely needs some type of NVIDIA program to even run this motherboard?

Any help or ideas on how to move forward is greatly appreciated! not a noob but by far no whiz kid..thank you!
5  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Pre-Buy Question for Sapphire Radeon Vapor-X HD 7970 GHz OC 3GB on: June 30, 2013, 08:36:36 AM
Was hoping anyone could help with a little advice on if I should buy this card for $300 used :

Radeon Vapor-X HD 7970 GHz OC 3GB

http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DL-DVI-I-SL-DVI-D-PCI-Express-11197-12-40G/dp/B008PQAE98/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372285900&sr=8-2&keywords=sapphire+radeon+7970

I have read the GHZ editions seems to cause a lot of problems and am curious if anyone has any recent experience with using them for Bitcoin as well as scrypt mining and what type of PSU power you will need for one of these? two?

Also am I going to need to BIOS flash this to get 700+ speeds since it is a GHZ edition? I have a 650w PSU running 1 x GIGABYTE 7970 and am curious if I will need to upgrade to a 850plus to get both working in same pc rig? Thanks for any help or advice in amping up my hashpower Smiley

6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Low Hash- Gigabyte HD 7970(R797OC-3GD) BIOS Flash Help on: June 15, 2013, 07:31:45 AM
I think I am ready to flash my bios but need a little help as this will be my first time doing a flash but am confident with a little guidance on the right BIOS I can make it happen. I bought a used Gigabyte HD 7970 3072MB GDDRS the other day on craigslist and have tried everything to get past 550 Kh/s via scrypt mining. When mining BTC i get around 650 Mh/s but havent played to much with that area as I am trying to get the scrypt mining down. At this point It seems I have tried almost everyones configurations on the forums and even started from ground up with the README file and still nothing above 550 Kh/s. That is also using -g 1 as when i use -g 2 it stays under 390 kh/s? I am thinking at this point my BIOS may be too old on the card as these are my current stats on my windows 7 rig:

Display device       : AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series on Tahiti GPU
Display driver       : 9.14.10.0969, Catalyst 13.4
BIOS                 : 015.022.000.004
GPU: Gigabyte HD 7970 3072MB GDDRS - GV-R797OC-3GD

Looking at http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?manufacturer=Gigabyte&model=HD+7970 there seems to be much newer BIOS versions although I am not sure which BIOS to flash with since i have a OC model and I have read that is not the best for scrypt mining hence needing to try a TO??

My current config for cgminer is :

Code:
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
cgminer --scrypt -w 256 -g 1 --thread-concurrency 8192 --intensity 13 --gpu-engine 1100 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-fan 100 -o http://mining.usa.la.hypernova.pw:9332 -u worker.1 -p xxxxx

As I mentioned I tried -g 2 as suggested from everyone and every time it drops dramatically down to 380 Kh/s from 540 when using -g 1. When following the ReadME file for Cgminer my ThreadConcurrency speed came out to be 22400 but have read to use 8192 and see no difference in speed between the two. So at this point I am thinking a flash of the bios will be the way to go although I am still up for hearing anyones suggestions Smiley Thanks for the help in advance! this is driving me crazy..rawwr
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Site for Bidding on Coins? on: June 10, 2013, 10:26:31 PM
Just curious if anyone is working on a site like ebay but just for BTC,LTC and every other alt coin wanting to be sold? Seems like it would do well or would that basically just be an online exchange? It could be called "BitBay"

Just a thought Smiley

9  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Flash Radeon XT1900 Mac to PC? on: May 21, 2013, 10:53:36 PM
I am new to flashing a GPU but that seems to be what needs to be done to make use of this card. I have a perfectly good ATI Radeon XT1900 that I would love to put into one of my older pc's to help mine but its current state is the MAC format/edition. Anyone have any knowledge of going from MAC to PC in flashing? Will this actually work? I have a running mac and pc so I can flash it on either but can not find any good guides on making this happen. thank you!
