1  Economy / Scam Accusations / [RESOLVED] Adam B. Dada/7bucktees.com on: October 11, 2014, 04:04:10 AM
EDIT: After I made this post, I did get a refund from Adam. See the other replies in the thread. I'm now marking this as resolved.

Adam B. Dada runs 7bucktees.com, and ran the now-defunct coinsmiths.com. On July 5th, 2014 I ordered a wooden "Bitcoin Accepted Here" sign from CoinSmiths. It was $10, plus $3.45 shipping, which I paid via Bitcoin. Not a huge amount of money, but I feel that this is still worth warning others about.

By July 29th (24 days later), my order hadn't even shipped. The "from" address on my email receipt was adam.dada@gmail.com, so I responded to it:

Quote
Hi-

I ordered this item over three weeks ago, and it's still listed as
"processing". Why is it taking so long?

-Chris

The response was surprisingly prompt:

Quote
Chris:

I shut down CoinSmiths this weekend due to another team dropping the ball
completely.  I will be posting about it tomorrow, and I will be moving all
orders over to my other print shop at 7bucktees.com.  In addition, I will
be giving a store credit in an amount equal or greater to the order total.

This is the third team of people I have hired and paid in Bitcoin that has
failed the site.  I've been involved in Bitcoin since the first year, and
while I love the currency and use it daily, it's become impossible to hire
and motivate people for some reason.  Very frustrating, and costing me
thousands of dollars a month in wasted effort, ugh.

I'll email you tomorrow and I  have my guys at 7bucktees.com processing all
the failed jobs as we speak.

Me:

Quote
Thank you for the prompt reply. I had ordered one of your wooden table
signs, not a shirt. Will 7bucktees be able to deliver that?

Adam:

Quote
Yep.  I shut down the CoinSmiths shop on Saturday from out of town, and had
my 7bucktees manager go over and take the laser engraver, the sticker
printer (which weighs like 1500 pounds) and some other hardware.  I know
they're setting everything up, getting drivers to work, and trying to
figure out what orders shipped and didn't.  I am hopeful orders will start
going out tomorrow -- as long as the wood isn't warped.  I ordered a fresh
batch of wood on Monday but I haven't heard if it's coming today or not!

Would you do me a small favor?  Please go over to www.7bucktees.com/help
and create a new help desk ticket with your CoinSmiths order number.  This
is only so that my customer service people have a better view of the
discussions.  I am on that help desk as well (you'll see my name and face
when I reply), but my customer service reps will do a better job of
updating you!

Me:

Quote
Will do. Thanks!

Quote
I don't see a way to create an account on 7bucktees without placing an
order, and I need to log in in order to create a helpdesk ticket.

Adam:

Quote
Oh crap.  Stupid me.  Sorry about that.  Give me an hour, I have my webdevs
on speakerphone right now!

Quote
Oh that was easy.  Please try one more time.  There should be a "register"
link now:

http://www.7bucktees.com/help/

My ticket on 7bucktees:

Quote
Haven’t received CoinSmiths order

I ordered the medium-size wooden “Bitcoin Accepted Here” table sign from CoinSmiths on July 5th, and have yet to receive it. I talked to Adam Dada via email, and he said I should open a helpdesk ticket on this site. My order number is 540.

The receipt from my order:
(snip)

Me to Adam via email:

Quote
All set now. Thanks again.

Adam posts a comment on the ticket:

Quote
Got it, thanks.  One of my customer service reps will bounce in here when they open for the day!

Adam via email again:

Quote
i responded to it just to get myself in the updates.  i believe we open the
shop at 11am today (an hour from now), so someone should bounce in after
that.

i just hired a stay-at-home mom yesterday who will monitor the help desks
outside of regular business hours, but we haven't trained her yet, so i
doubt she'll be saying anything yet.  her job is to make sure everyone else
does their job!

sorry again for the confusion.  bitcoin is awesome, i love it, but it's a
real headache when you let other people into wallet access, etc.  learning
lesson for me, big time.

Me:

Quote
No worries. I'm actually not in a huge rush to receive my order, I just
wanted to make sure it hadn't been forgotten about.

I don't know if he took that as a cue that I'm safe to ignore or what, but all of my communication attempts after this point have gone unanswered.

On September 17th (50 days after my conversation with Adam, 74 days since my original order), I posted a comment on the support ticket:

Quote
So it's been another month and a half or so. What's the hold up?

No response. On September 24th (7 days later, 81 days since the order), I try emailing Adam:

Quote
Hi Adam-

After you had me open up the support thread on 7bucktees, I never
actually received any further communication from your customer service
staff. Is this thing actually going to get made? If not, can I get a refund?

Here's the support thread link:
(snip)

-Chris

Still nothing. On September 30th (6 more days, total of 87 days), hoping to get the attention of the support staff, I open another ticket on 7bucktees:

Quote
Refund Request – it’s been THREE MONTHS

I placed an order for a “Bitcoin Accepted Here” sign on CoinSmiths on July 5th. My order number is 540. I’ve waited nearly three months to receive it. At this point I just want a refund. The total cost of the order, including shipping, was $13.45. I have a previous ticket here which has been ignored: (snip)

You can send the money to my Paypal account (snip), or I can give you a Bitcoin address to use if you’d prefer that.

I also sent an email to Adam directly:

Quote
No one has responded to my support ticket, so I've opened up a new one
requesting a refund (see below):

No response to those either. It's October 10th as I'm writing this up, 10 days since my last communication attempt, and a grand total of 97 days since I ordered the sign. I have not received the product that I ordered and I have not received a refund. I have not gotten any response from Adam Dada or from anyone working for him since July.

It looks like this isn't just an isolated incident either:

According to the Reddit thread, some people apparently do receive their orders. I'm not sure if this is an intentional selective scam on Adam's part, if he's just incompetent, or if he's simply too lazy and indifferent to make sure that his customers receive the products that they pay for. In any case, beware of any business that he's involved with.

I have around 2 to 3 years of professional programming experience.  I work mainly with Python and PHP, though I've used many different languages.  My rate for contract work is $30 per hour if paid in BTC, or $40 per hour if paid in USD, and I offer new clients 50% off on the first 10 hours of work that I do for them.

My resume is available here.  You can see some of my work on my GitHub account.

3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [Public Beta now open!] Want Bitcoin to have a real user/merchant support site? on: July 17, 2011, 01:18:17 AM
EDIT (9/7): Public beta is now open!  Thanks to everyone who helped out!

EDIT (8/30): The site has launched, and is now in the "private beta" phase, which lasts one week.  It will be open to the public on September 6th.  You can see the site right now by going to http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/

EDIT (8/20): "This proposal has reached 100% commitment. We are preparing for its launch and expect to create it soon."  Thanks everyone!  Once the Stack Exchange staff set up the site, there will be a one-week private beta with those that are currently signed up, after which it will be open to the public.

If you want Bitcoin to have a better user support site than these forums, please join the Bitcoin Stack Exchange.

For those who aren't familiar with it, Stack Exchange is a network of question & answer sites, the most well-known of which is stackoverflow.com.  The sites feature a reddit-style reputation system, with high-rep users being granted moderation abilities.  Acceptable and unacceptable topics are also defined in advance for each site.  The Bitcoin SE will be strictly for technical and conceptual questions, not for politics or philosophy.  This should nip trolling and general nonsense in the bud, leaving us with a clean and professional site.

At the time of this writing, we need 71 more people to launch the site, 48 of which need to be established Stack Exchange users.  We've been growing steadily, and should launch around the end of August at this rate.  I'd like to see it happen sooner, so please join up!

EDIT:

We've been getting a lot of people signing up, which is good.  Unfortunately, we're lagging behind on established, high-reputation Stack Exchange users.  In the 4 days since this thread was started, we've gained 21 users, but only 4 of them have 200+ reputation on another Stack Exchange site (3 if you don't count me getting my rep score above 200 during that time).  We need 100 users with 200+ reputation; we're currently at 56.

For those of you who've already signed up, or are just signing up now, please consider participating in one of the existing Stack Exchange sites and building up your reputation.  Getting a score of 200 isn't too difficult, it just takes patience.

Some tips:

Each upvote on a question that you ask is worth 5 points.  Upvotes on your answers are worth 10 points.  Getting your answer accepted as "the answer" by the person who asked the question is worth 15 points.  Answers tend to get upvoted more often than questions, so it's easier to gain reputation from answering questions than from asking them.  Make sure to upvote the questions that you post answers for; it helps those questions get more attention, which means more upvotes for your answer.

Stack Overflow is the most popular of the SE sites, so the pacing tends to be a bit frantic.  Questions will tend to get answered while you're still typing your answer.  If this is a problem for you, consider going with one of the other SE sites instead (I went with Super User).  However, keep in mind that you don't need to be first to answer, you just need to contribute useful information that hasn't been presented yet.

Each tag on an SE site has its own RSS feed.  For example Super User has a bitcoin tag, and here's its RSS feed, found at the bottom of the page.  Watching specific tags that you're interested in is a good way to find questions to answer.

Make sure your account on Area51 (the new site staging area, where the Bitcoin proposal is located) is linked with your other SE accounts, so that your reputation score gets counted.

5  Economy / Trading Discussion / Questions for in-person BTC/cash exchangers on: July 01, 2011, 03:36:01 PM
I'm thinking of buying and selling bitcoins locally, mainly as a way to make it easier for people to get involved in the bitcoin economy.  I know some other bitcoiners are doing this as well, so I'm interested in getting some advice on how to go about it.

  • Do your customers come to your home, do you go to them, or do you meet somewhere?
  • What safety precautions do you take?
  • What kind of fees do you charge?
  • How much business do you get, and what kind of area are you located in, population-wise?
  • Where do you advertise?

7  Economy / Goods / [SOLD] PowerColor 5870 PCS+ -- $220, free priority shipping and insurance on: June 22, 2011, 03:16:22 AM
I'm selling my last serious mining card:

Asking $220 worth of BTC for it.  I'll cover priority shipping and insurance within the US.

8  Economy / Goods / Remains of my Magic: The Gathering collection, make me an offer on: June 03, 2011, 10:11:40 PM
I used to play competitive Legacy-format Magic tournaments, and I've still got a decent chunk of my collection left.  A friend offered to buy it from me a while back, but he's been taking too long while the price of BTC keeps rising.  Cards are listed below.  I've priced everything out according to magictraders.com, which tracks the average price of cards sold on eBay.  These are generally the lowest prices around, and in practice it's hard to actually get the cards for those prices.

I cut out any cards worth less than $5, and what remains is worth a bit over $1700 (according to the lowest standard available).  I want to move them sooner rather than later, so I'll consider reasonable offers (post them in this thread).

Update: I finally decided to break up the collection and sell the individual pieces.  Here's what I've got left:

QuantityNamemagictraders.com price
1gilded lotus$6.15
1chalice of the void$6.57
1emrakul, the aeons torn$7.71
2umezawa's jitte$15.87
1null rod$9.12
2concordant crossroads$18.10
1genesis$6.69
1knight of the reliquary$7.43
1flooded strand$19.04
2polluted delta$24.21
1aether vial$11.86

I will consider any reasonable offers.

Update #2:  I've received inquiries about what else is in my binder, so I'm listing them here.  This is just stuff that I considered trade-worthy, and doesn't include the bulk of my commons and uncommons, or my sub-$1 rares.

9  Other / Obsolete (selling) / [SOLD] Mitsubishi xd206u DLP projector - Make me an offer on: June 03, 2011, 05:48:37 AM
Specs: http://www.projectorcentral.com/Mitsubishi-XD206U.htm

I paid $400 for it 6-8 months ago.  Make me an offer.

The bulb has 450 hours of use on it, out of an estimated total lifetime of 2000-3000 hours.  Comes with a VGA cable and a PS3->RCA cable.  I'm selling it because I haven't been using it very much, and would rather have more bitcoins.   Grin

The case has some sharpie markings on it.  Also, red parts of the image can sometimes get a bit fuzzy.  Image quality is still fine for ordinary (non-videophile) users.
10  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Free shipping: Sapphire 4870 - $75, Corsair vx550w - $60, USB thermometer - $8 on: May 31, 2011, 09:16:59 PM
My room is not big enough for the both of us.  The noise made me consider selling.  The heat finally convinced me.

I'm selling off my mining rig's parts and turning it back into the mild-mannered computer that it once was.  Prices are listed in USD, but will be settled in BTC.  I'm willing to use Clearcoin or Paypal/Dwolla if you can provide good trade references.  Please post questions and offers in this thread.

Here's what I've got left:

Sapphire 4870 - $75
Not an amazing mining card, but not too shabby either.  Includes box and all accessories.  About 95 mh/s when overclocked to stock limits.  Free standard shipping within the US.

Corsair VX550W - $60
High-quality single rail power supply.  Free priority shipping within the US.
11  Other / Obsolete (selling) / [SOLD] XFX 5870 - $200 (worth of BTC) on: May 27, 2011, 09:57:09 AM

Selling a 1GB XFX 5870, Model number HD-587X-ZN.  Comes with the box and all accessories.  I'll take $200 (worth of BTC) for it, unless I hear any better offers.  I paid $240 for it, but I'd rather move it sooner rather than later.  $15 for standard USPS shipping, $20 for priority mail, $50 for express mail.  Shipping outside the US probably won't be worth it.

Full disclosure: this is an XFX card.  It runs kinda hot (around 75C for me with the fan speed adjusted) and the fan is loud.  You'll want decent airflow and/or a tolerance for the sound of a hairdryer.  To the best of my knowledge, the card is in good working condition.  I did have some very minor stability issues with it, but I believe those were due to an inadequate power supply.  I was able to get 380 MH out of it when overclocked to stock limits.  I haven't replaced the BIOS or anything like that.

I have some extra PCIe extenders that I don't need.  I believe they're the same ones that you get from Cablesaurus.  I have four x1 cables and two x16 cables.  $8 (worth of BTC) each, free shipping within the US.  For an extra $3 each I'll cut the x1 cables down for you so that you can fit an x16 card into them.

13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Bounty: development of efficient open-source FPGA/ASIC mining solution on: May 17, 2011, 09:25:36 PM
I'm splitting this off from the FPGA mining for fun and profit thread.

Current contributors:

$2.00 USD per MH/s and 0.3w per MH/s:
  • BitterTea - 20 BTC
  • teknohog - 10 BTC
  • cacheson - 10 BTC retracted
Milestone Total - 30 BTC

$0.60 USD per MH/s and 0.3w per MH/s:
  • cacheson - 10 BTC retracted
  • gmaxwell - 10 BTC
  • riX - 20 BTC
  • gusti - 20 BTC
Milestone Total - 50 BTC

Grand Total - 80 BTC

Those of you who are interested in making sure that Bitcoin remains a distributed system through the transition from GPU mining to FPGA/ASIC mining are encouraged to contribute.  I know the total isn't much yet, but if enough of us chip in we should be able to provide a decent incentive.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I will offer a 10 BTC bounty to the first person who either:

1) Makes publicly available the source code and complete setup instructions for an FPGA-based Bitcoin mining device that can be created with off-the-shelf hardware.

or

2) Offers an ASIC-based Bitcoin mining device for sale to the general Bitcoin community, and makes publicly available all schematics, source code, and other relevant information used to develop said device.

Either of the above devices must cost no more than $0.60 USD per megahash per second that they provide, and must consume no more than 0.3 watts per megahash.

Designs must not be encumbered by any sort of "intellectual property" restrictions, with the exception of GPL-style copyleft licenses.

I will gladly match Chris Acheson's bounty of 10BTC on his terms.

A basic FPGA miner isn't a lot of work and it would be a fun project
for someone who hasn't done this kind of work before.  A _fast_
fpga miner which will achieve competitive performance would be a decent
accomplishment.

I think it's important to the health, security, and public confidence
in bit coin that a few large private parties do not retain a substantial
long term advantage in their ability to control the hashchain.

Making sure that the public has the lowest cost access to the mining
state of the art should be helpful for this purpose.
