1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / GPU Miner shut off, now Black Screen? on: May 24, 2018, 02:25:15 PM
I'd been hashing away happily, mining Eth, with my 4x RX 580 rig. It shut off for some reason and now when I start it up it shows the Asus screens, but then Windows won't open, it just shows a black screen. Is there anything I can do in the UEFI or anything, instead of just trying to reinstall Windows from a usb stick?
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Is Anyone Mining with Halong Dragonmint B29/Innosillicon D9 DecredMaster? on: May 22, 2018, 06:21:13 PM
What kind of numbers are you seeing? Decred is pumping pretty hard recently and these are hard to find, but I've seen eye-popping numbers. Is anyone running one of these bad boys?

4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Will My One GPU Rig Cause Problems With its Heat This Summer? on: April 18, 2018, 08:09:56 PM
I have a 4 GPU rig (rx 580s) in the basement. Been mining since January. I live in the midwest USA and it gets hot in the summer. My basement is usually significantly cooler than upstairs though. I'm running the cards on stock settings, no bios modding yet, just haven't had time to really understand how to do it correctly.

Is this going to be a problem in the summer because of the heat it puts off, or not so much since it's just one rig? What about adding one more rig, possibly in a different location in the house?
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Is this a good price for a 1060? on: April 16, 2018, 11:58:05 AM
I found some 1060's for $165 each, that seems like a steal, what do you think? Not looking for an opinion on whether mining is bad or not
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / How much could I get sell a 4-GPU (RX 580) rig, right now? on: March 27, 2018, 02:34:51 PM
I loved building it, and love mining, but kinda thinking that with prices the way they are (gpus overpriced, coins underpriced) it might be worth it to flip it, buy some BTC/alts, wait for a pump and then sell and the buy more gpus and build another rig. Might be crazy but I see people asking insane prices for ready-built rigs on craigslist. Thoughts?
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Mining shed in the backyard - what do I need to know? on: March 19, 2018, 10:02:59 PM
I'm running one mining rig in my basement, but am trying to see if I can scale up a bit. I don't really want to do it in the house, and I don't really want to spend the $$$ to rent warehouse space.

(However, if anyone thinks that one of those is the way to go, please tell me!)

So it seems like it might be worth it to buy a shed, and go that way. I am looking for advice only in the practical aspect here: I want to learn how to do this, and I'm not asking for advice about the investment side. I can run the numbers fine, I just am in a bit over my head as far as building stuff.

1. The Shed itself - any recommendations? What materials are best?

2. Electric - Can I just hire an electrician for this? How much cost am I looking at here to get this set up, potentially?

3. Ventilation - This is the part that gets me nervous. I understand the basic concepts here, but when I start thinking about exactly how I would go about doing this, my head spins. Could I do any of this myself? What kinds of intake/outtake fans should I use? What about when it rains or snows? etc etc. The more help and hand-holding in this area, the better.

4. Security issues - it would be in fenced-in backyard, lockable and I could hopefully put a door sensor from my home security system on there. What kind of fire protection would I want here, ideally? Is there anything I'm not thinking of?

What other issues am I not thinking of? I want to keep this as simple as possible.
8  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Pow Idea - tell me why it wouldn't work on: March 13, 2018, 10:13:37 PM
So I had a thought about proof of work and delegated proof of stake. So if I understand correctly, the main advantage of dpos is that you can "schedule" block producers, and thus have blocks produced quite quickly since the producers are known ahead of time. Steem has nearly instant transactions - actually more like 3 seconds I think? - and I think EOS is claiming to have even faster ones. Of course there seem to be serious issues with dpos as we've seen with Lisk and the monopoly that the delegates there have. I also like PoW for a number of other reasons.

So I was thinking about why PoW is slow, and I was thinking about how it could incorporate this dpos advantage, and I had a thought: couldn't PoW achieve essentially the same thing, simply by having miners compete not to produce the current block, but for the opportunity to produce several (smaller) blocks in the future?

So just as a simplistic example, let's say Joe is mining, and let's just say that we are using BTC's algorithm, and a miner will find a solution on average once in ten minutes. So Joe is hashing away, and after a while, he solves the current hashing problem. So then he essentially gets 200 slots where he can be scheduled to produce a block. These 200 slots would get added and mixed in to the queue of slots on the blockchain and he would be scheduled to produce those blocks, and upon producing them would them get the mining reward. Joe would have to be running a node with near 100% uptime even after he finds the hashing solution, much like a delegate in dpos has to do to produce blocks.

I assume there is something I am missing or not understanding, since much greater minds than mine have not used this, to the best of my knowledge, so I'm trying to learn - what would be the issue with this?
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / amdgpu-pro drivers for my rx 580s on ubuntu not working on: February 19, 2018, 12:52:43 AM
I'm trying to install the drivers amdgpu-pro drivers for my rx 580s on ubuntu, and when I reboot, it keeps going black and won't ever get to the login screen. I can access the tty and uninstall them, and then everything is fine and dandy.

Are there alternative drivers I can use? Can anyone advise? I'm not a huge linux guy, just trying it since Windows was not very stable, so please forgive my ignorance.
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / First Eth Pool Payout from First Rig - Feels Good, Man on: February 07, 2018, 03:39:38 PM
The spark that got me really interested in mining was hearing Notsofast on the Crypto Street Podcast. So I built a small 3 GPU rig (supposed to be 4 but still havent gotten 4th GPU to work, grr) - it was fun as hell to research, buy the pieces, put it together, and see it get going. I started mining ethereum and it was such a thrill when I first saw the console displaying hashrates and shares found. And now to see actual ether in my wallet, new ether that was produced in part thanks to the hash power that my own computer added to the network - it's an awesome feeling.

Sure, I haven't hit ROI yet. And it's a fairly modest amount of ether. But it certainly is a LOT more than my electricity cost. And it is so so, so much more satisfying than just buying and investing/trading (which I do also), or even staking. There's just something about building your own machine from scratch and actually producing your own new cryptocurrency that is so exciting.

Thanks to everyone who answered any dumb questions I had. And to anyone looking to get into mining, I would highly recommend it - but go slow. Build one modest GPU rig and get it going before you dump that $50k that you and your friend pooled together to make a whole mining farm. It's doable if you are at least somewhat tech savvy but it's not as simple as "$50k = x amount of gpus/asic = x profit". But it is certainly rewarding as heck.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / At what point will there be heat issues? on: January 26, 2018, 07:40:09 PM
I am currently running a 4 GPU rig in my basement. I'd like to expand, but am sort of worried about the heat during the summer. At this point, it's not even noticeable; you can put your hand right next to the GPUs and they feel a tad warm, but that's about it. It might change during the summer, but it doesn't seem to be an issue at this size.

If I add another 4 GPU rig, let's say, is the heat already going to be an issue? Or not until I had 8 more? Or more than that? I'm just not sure how to proceed, I want to start expanding slowly but I don't want to run into a situation where all of a sudden the heat is a big issue and the AC is not cutting it anymore, and I haven't addressed it. The basement tends to be much cooler than upstairs all year round.

Also always looking for simple/practical ideas of how to deal with heat running a rig in the basement, if anyone has any.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Guidance on Basement Rig Expansion on: January 18, 2018, 11:22:32 PM
I have one GPU rig (3x gpus) running, and it's great - I would really like to build more.

Aside from consulting with an electrician, I am trying to figure out how to ventilate properly. I can have the rigs right next to a window that opens into a lmedium-large window well. I'm probably going to end up hiring someone to put this part together, but what kind of ventilation system would make sense here? I'm looking for the simplest solution possible that can comfortably allow at least a few more rigs.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Adding 4th RX 580 degrades hashrate of all cards? on: January 15, 2018, 04:38:42 PM
I have been running a 3 GPU rig with RX 580s, mining ETH, and it's been very stable. I had a 4th card that I wanted to add, and it was crashing until i realized I needed to enable Above 4G decoding. So that worked, and I now can run all 4.

The only thing is, they all used to get 22 Mh/s, and now they are down to about 17. What is going on?

Other details:

- mobo is asus prime Z270-P.
- I'm using risers for all the cards.
- I have 8 GB ram and set the virtual memory to 16GB min.

Any ideas how to fix this?
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Built first rig, want to slowly expand - Concerns about location, heat, etc. on: January 04, 2018, 08:17:56 PM
So I just built my first small GPU mining rig last week and have been happily mining Eth since then. I would really like to expand and build more, and in all honesty I'd like to do it soon. The gains from my recent crypto investments would potentially give me the funds to be able to start, but practically I'm not sure how to proceed.

I live in a house with my wife and 9 month old son, and with a growing family, I don't feel like I can start loading the basement or garage with these things. And I don't think the wife would be wild about it, either.

And I have thrown around the idea, in my head, of renting some kind of warehouse/industrial type space, but all the places I'm seeing online are way too big, and I don't want to just sign a 12 month lease and have to go all out all at once. And I also just worry that places would not like the heat/noise/electricity use, so I'm really sure how to broach that either.

I also worry about the heat issues. I live in the Midwest (US) and it gets awfully hot and muggy in the summer. I'm a software dev, though, and physics wasn't ever my thing, so I feel like setting up cooling systems is sort of beyond me.

Anyone have any practical advice or guidance here? What would be your next step?
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Some Newbie GPU mining questions on: December 28, 2017, 08:29:00 PM
I am in the middle of building my first GPU mining rig and had a couple questions:

1. Is there anything wrong with using Windows 7? I don't want to spend the money on 10 if I don't have to, and I really don't want to use Linux if I can help it.

2. How much heat is a 4 gpu rig going to generate? I'm not worried about the winter, but the summer is making me nervous. What's the easiest/best way to deal with the heat? I currently have my rig in the basement, but I could move it if need be.
