Sierra Leone just ran the first blockchain-based election
John Biggs@johnbiggs / Mar 14, 2018

The citizens of Sierra Leone went to the polls on March 7 but this time something was different: the country recorded votes at 70% of the polling to the blockchain using a technology that is the first of its kind in actual practice.

The tech, created by Leonardo Gammar of Agora, anonymously stored votes in an immutable ledger, thereby offering instant access to the election results.

“Anonymized votes/ballots are being recorded on Agora’s blockchain, which will be publicly available for any interested party to review, count and validate,” said Gammar. “This is the first time a government election is using blockchain technology.”

“Sierra Leone wishes to create an environment of trust with the voters in a contentious election, especially looking at how the election will be publicly viewed post-election. By using blockchain as a means to immutably record ballots and results, the country hopes to create legitimacy around the election and reduce fall-out from opposition parties,” he said.

Why is this interesting? While this is little more than a proof of concept – it is not a complete voting record but instead captured a seemingly acceptable plurality of votes – it’s fascinating to see the technology be implemented in Sierra Leone, a country of about 7.4 million people. The goal ultimately is to reduce voting costs by cutting out paper ballots as well as reducing corruption in the voting process.

Gammar, for his part, sees the value of a decentralizes system...

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Zilliqa - What are your thoughts? on: February 15, 2018, 05:28:38 AM
It just came off of ICO recently, and the price has dropped a bit during this crash, but is still 14x from ICO. I'm considering investing, since it could be a potential Ethereum-killer. What are you guys' thoughts on it?
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Does Bloom have a MVP or Working Prototype? on: February 05, 2018, 02:10:40 AM
I've been checking out Bloom lately. It's a credit-scoring and risk assessment protocol that has recently come on the exchanges from its ICO. The price is great, and the team is packed with all-stars. It's a great product that I'm leaning towards investing in, but I don't know if they have a MVP or Working Prototype. I read the whitepaper, and it seems like they don't, based on what I read. But I could be wrong. Could someone with more info let me know for sure?

6  Other / Meta / How about a merit bounty & services subforum? on: January 28, 2018, 07:14:22 AM
It would make things a lot easier for people. People could agree to do jobs, etc. in exchange for an increase in merit. It would help users find a predictable and reliable supply of merit, and it could help encourage rapid distribution of merit throughout the forum.
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Cobinhood is a great deal right now on: January 27, 2018, 12:55:54 AM
Seriously, it's at $166 mil market cap right now, almost 1/4 of its all time high. The product is great, and so is the team. I'm looking to take a position soon.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / What are some great upcoming ICOs that allow US investors? on: January 23, 2018, 07:38:45 PM
I've seen tons of great ICOs that, unfortunately, are closed to US investors. Which ones are quality ICOs that US investors can participate in?
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Anybody think the crash is due to market manipulation for Bitcoin Futures? on: January 22, 2018, 09:16:43 PM
I recently watched a video that explained this as being a possible reason. The cutoff date for some of the bitcoin futures was Jan 17th, and I think another one is coming on the 26th. Could it be possible that some whales tried to short the market in order to get a good futures return?

It would be a good time to do so, especially given the annual dip in prices because of the Lunar New Year in Asia. What do you all think?
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How are you feeling about Monero right now? on: December 24, 2017, 11:48:46 AM
These past few days have been awful. And the privacy coin space has become a lot more crowded recently, with some good competitors such as Verge and ZCash. Is Monero still a good choice? Hopefully the Coinbase addition turns things around.
