62  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Dust Collection on: March 08, 2013, 09:49:34 PM
Without any changes to the protocol itself miners could make it economical to create transactions which reduce the UTXO set by changing their transaction rules to favor transactions which reduce dust. Once this happens, clients could be programmed to do that automatically.

One way it could be done: if all outputs are above the dust cutoff, and if N inputs are below the dust cutoff, prioritize the transaction as if it included N*the minimum fee in addition to fees which are actually present.

64  Bitcoin / Armory / New Wallet Format on: February 24, 2013, 07:30:50 PM
If I understand correctly the new wallet format is primarily intended to support BIP 32, but will it also support non-deterministic or even "single-key" wallets?

The reason I ask is because I have imported my blockchain.info private key into an Armory wallet so that my ability to spend those funds is not limited to blockchain.info's uptime. In order to do this I had to make a regular deterministic wallet and manually add the key (which is fine), but I never had the option to dispense with the unneeded deterministic keys. It also means that any time I use Armory to initiate a transaction instead of the web client I must be careful to manually specify the change address to avoid sending it to the deterministic addresses.

65  Bitcoin / Armory / Segmentation fault on: February 14, 2013, 12:01:17 PM
Since the last time I upgraded (0.87.2) I've noticed that Armory only runs for a few days before crashing. I finally ran it from the console so that I could get the error message. This most recent time I started up at block 220285 and it ran fine until this:

66  Economy / Service Discussion / blockchain.info Android app on: February 07, 2013, 02:08:04 AM
What's going on with the Blockchain app for Android? The original one has been removed and a new one has taken its place.

This isn't how upgrades normally work and so the situation does not inspire confidence.

69  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Bitcoin mining will not be profitable in the long term on: December 29, 2012, 11:09:21 PM
A lot of people seem to think that even in the most optimistic scenario in which Bitcoin becomes widespread and ubiquitous, mining then will look like mining today from a profitability standpoint. That mining would still be profitable in that future is inconceivable, because the interests of retailers would dictate otherwise.

The act of moving currency around incurrs fees for retailers. They pay fees to card processors, they pay fees for cash movements, they pay fees to payroll processing companies, and they pay fees to their banks. For the purposes of this though experiment let's assume they pay out 5% of their gross revenue in the forms of various fees that Bitcoin could potential eliminate for them.

That's a lot of incentive to switch to Bitcoin. 5% of the gross revenue of the top 100 retailers is over $100 billion. Consider that number to be a first order estimate of how much these companies would be willing to spend on mining to make Bitcoin a viable replacement for existing currencies.

If a store like Walmart wants to accept bitcoins instead of credit cards then they want their customers' transactions processed quickly. They don't care about prioritizing transaction by fee because their big picture is the profitability of the company as a whole. They don't need mining to be profitable. If they decide the providing complementary mining to the network will benefit their business they will provide it, for the same reason they provide complimentary public restrooms.

Given that the retail sector alone has up to $100 billion to spend on mining as a loss leader, don't plan for it to stay profitable if Bitcoin becomes ubiquitous.

74  Bitcoin / Meetups / Dallas, Texas on: November 09, 2012, 05:40:15 PM
The Dallas/Fort Worth area is deficient in terms of organized Bitcoin meetups, even though there are enough people involved in the area to have one. I know of two or three people not on this board who would be interested in a biweekly or monthly meetup so with a few more people we could get a regular event started.

As far as a venue there's a resturant in Dallas owned by a Libertarian (actually this district's LP candidate for Senate in the last election) who I think might be persuaded to accept Bitcoins if enough people ask for it.

75  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Effects of network propagation delay on: October 27, 2012, 09:00:07 PM
As of block B my address A has a balance of 10 BTC.

I decide to spend some of it so my client generates and broadcasts a transaction (T1) with a 1 BTC output to destination address D and 9 BTC to change address C. At approximately the same time someone else broadcasts a transaction (T2) with a 5 BTC output to address A.

The miner which ultimate solves (B+1) includes T2 in the block but not T1 because it saw T2 first and had already started working on the block before T1 arrived.

T2 gets included in (B+1). T1 gets included in (B+2).

As of (B+3) what is the balance of address A?
76  Economy / Service Discussion / A service I'd like to use if it existed on: October 27, 2012, 06:24:42 PM
One bitcoin-funded debit cards become available my need to hold dollars in a bank account will be virtually eliminated. If I wanted to I could could convert up to 100% of my traditional income into bitcoins but presently this would require a fair amount of manual intervention.

What I would like to see is a service that assigns me a routing number and account number which I can then give to my employer for direct deposit deposit purposes. Then I'd like for any dollars that are sent to that account converted to bitcoins at a reasonable exchange rate and sent to me.

This can't be difficult technically - are there any laws or regulations that would make it impractical? If not, it would make sense for the payment processing companies especially to consider offering such a service. If a payment processor can get some of the dollars it needs to pay merchants directly from other customers instead of from an exchange it would be result in lower costs for everyone involved.
77  Other / Meta / [REQUEST] Automatically skip to the page with unread commend on thread load on: September 28, 2012, 01:29:00 AM
I always use the "all" link to open threads long-running threads with new posts because I can't memorize the last page number of every thread I've read to know exactly which page I should start at. Then I have to scroll until I find the last post I remember reading and go from there.

Since the database already knows what the last post I saw was, why can't it automatically load the correct page when I click on the topic link, and as a bonus, scroll to the newest comment via an anchor?
78  Other / Meta / Ignored user threads on: September 27, 2012, 09:11:10 PM
When a user is ignored threads he started show up in a smaller italic font when viewing a particular forum but this style distinction is not applied in the "unread" or "watchlist" pages.

Could this behavior be applied to those pages as well?
79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / [poll] Importance of the mining reward on: September 19, 2012, 03:17:48 PM
How important is the fact that Bitcoin is limited to 21 million units to your willingness to use it?

Hopefully this poll is less confusing than the other one.
80  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / P2P coin mixing on: July 15, 2012, 12:38:56 AM
These are some thoughts I had while considering the problem of anonymous coin mixing. Not all of the features exist currently in bitcoin but I believe they are possible:

N agents meet over an anonymous communication channel. They collaborate to create an N-of-N multisig address (M). They also agree on a time limit (L) in the form of a future block number and a payout amount (A).

Once those preconditions have been met the begin constructing a transaction (T) which takes M as an input and several outputs of size A. They nominate output addresses in a manner which can not be traced to any particular participant.

When all N agents are satisfied with T they sign the transaction but wait to broadcast it until M is sufficiently funded.

Now it's up to all participants to fund M before the time limit expires. In order to prevent cheating, the transactions they use to fund M expire if they are not included in a block prior to L and are invalid unless they are included in the same block as T. Each participant should include additional input beyond the outputs they have specified as a contribution to the transaction fee. They can attempt to contribute less than their share but that makes it unlikely that T will be processed.

If M is not sufficiently funded prior to L then mixing fails. T never happens and everybody gets their coins back because all the transactions which have M as an output are invalid.
