1  Bitcoin / Pools / When KnCMiner pool switches on 240+ TH/sec will these other pools fold up? on: September 03, 2013, 04:16:45 PM
I'm a noob, so humor me as I wrap my head around what might happen when the KnCMiner pool switches on.  Only Jupiter machines will be involved.  Each ASIC box capable of .4+ TH/sec.  So figure 600 boxes (my guess is 10% of units sold) all hosted by KnC = 240+ TH/sec round the clock, right?

Metaphorically speaking, that's like 600 Bucyrus RH400 hydraulic shovels vs a few hundred guys with teaspoons.

Thoughts?  Are my numbers way off?  Corrections appreciated.

3  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / KnC Hosted Jupiters on: September 01, 2013, 02:15:17 PM
I recently ordered a Jupiter (hosted by KnCMiner) as my newbie entry into mining.  I am a bit anxious as to when the ASICs will be delivered to them and how long it will be before they plug mine up.  The site currently says units will ship in October, BUT I am thinking that it would make much more sense for them to plug up all the hosted boxes first before shipping boxes out the door since they also get transaction fees.  Doing so would also help them identify and resolve QC issues.  It doesn't make sense to ship boxes out the door first only to have problems discovered after they leave.  I can only imagine my anger if I were one who waited for shipping and delivery only to find out there are problems...

Anyone have any insight as to what KnC is actually thinking regarding the above?

[I chose hosting because of the time savings, support, electrical/cooling costs, shipping costs, and the BIG whammy: import duties and customs delays were they to send it - not to mention that I am a newbie and have no business at all putting my hands on it or attempting to manage it myself.]

Also, according to their site, they are testing the arrived boards using FPGA at a fraction of hash capacity, but allegedly the same power and other metrics.  Running the boxes full-out with ASICs mounted will likely have different results...just my thinking...

I am also thinking maybe the global hash rates have been jumping because KnC is testing.  I would think they would not test on the live network.  Then again, if you are going to test, what better way than to also make money doing it?  Thoughts?
4  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / The BitCoin Mining Curve (same as oil) on: September 01, 2013, 08:02:32 AM
I'm just throwing it out there as I wait to get out of the Noob jail...

It seems to me that BitCoin mining should be expected to follow the same curve as oil, but within a much more compressed time frame.  BitCoin mining has behaved exactly like oil.

While it was at the surface, everyone could get it.  Just pick a spot and dig a hole.  Over time, it became more scarce and difficult to get out of the ground.  2009-2012, one only needed some retail parts to be a miner.  Now, with ACIS boxes set to zerg within the next few weeks, all that easy BitCoin mining is a goner.  Only very high-end players from then on out need plug into the mining market until eventually, just as it is with Exxon now making profit at the rate of $5M/hr, so too will BitCoin mining become limited to just 2-4 ACIS-powered swarms.  One needs to be in that swarm to survive.  Standard Oil or Exxon - pick one.

WHEN that consolidation happens, will BitCoin be less attractive and thus not as readily adopted?  Or even dumped?  Will the price soar because most BitCoin holders are hoarders and supply/demand fully kicks in?  Or will BitCoin tank because the price rise would have been too much faster than the BitCoin rate of adoption and proliferation?

I don't know.  I'm just a Noob wasting time until I can post elsewhere...
