1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Problems with Bitcoin Core on: July 13, 2015, 05:02:42 PM
I don't run the bitcoin core program regularly, I normally just run it once a month or so to synchronize the latest transactions.

Anyway, I ran it a couple weeks ago for the first time recently, it started downloading transactions but after some time it failed with an error indicating a corrupted database of some sort. I don't have the exact error message saved, unfortunately.

I figured I could simply remove the existing database and re-download all the transactions to fix this, so I attempted doing that. I deleted my bitcoin directory, downloaded bitcoin-qt 0.10.2, installed and ran. It started downloading transactions, and this process took over 24 hours (as expected) to rebuild the database.  However, it never finished- it hung up on some error message before completing, and never worked. After 0.11 was released a few days ago, I tried the same with that, and a similar result occurred- after over 24 hours of downloading and confirming transactions, it threw an error and stopped working.

Is this indicative of a hardware problem on my computer? It really never crashes, it's been perfectly stable generally, and other programs work fine. I ran some memory tests and disk scans just to be sure, and I tried switching the bitcoin data directory to an alternate drive and nothing has improved.

Is there some part of 'bitcoin core' that is saved somewhere other than the install folder and the bitcoin folder (the one under my profile)? I have been deleting these to try to do a clean install, but maybe there is some other folder I need to be deleting also?
2  Other / Archival / SOLD on: October 16, 2013, 02:45:18 PM

Both keys sold.  Thanks.

I have two Hearthstone beta keys for sale.  Asking .6 BTC each, but may consider any offers.  I'm not a key farmer, blizzard's distribution system just messed up and sent me two keys when I already had hearthstone activated on my account.

I will also accept payment in XPM (primecoin) or PPC (peercoin) at exchange equivalent to .6 BTC.

If you do not have sufficiently high trade rep, I will need you to either pay first or use escrow.
3  Economy / Digital goods / [WTB] Hearthstone Beta Key 1.3 BTC on: August 26, 2013, 03:24:23 PM
Willing to pay 1.3 BTC for a hearthstone beta key.

This is how it will work: we will use escrow, or you will send the key first.

Thanks.
4  Bitcoin / Hardware / alternative power supply for ANKER hubs? on: August 13, 2013, 01:51:18 AM
I bought 6 of the anker branded usb hubs for running asicminer usb devices.  They've worked okay, except so far a shocking 3! of them have had failed power supplies.  The first I RMA'd the whole hub, got a new one working great, but for the second failure I noticed it was just the power supply so I told anker as much, and they just sent me an extra power supply.

Well, now that extra ended up being DOA and another hub's power supply has failed in the meantime.  I understand anker support is supposed to be good, and I'm sure they will try and send me more replacements, but the downtime and waiting is rather annoying.  I'm thinking about just buying a 12v 5a power supply and seeing if it lasts a bit longer than the 4 amp supplies anker ships the hubs with.

Any recommendations?  Anyone else have problems with anker usb hub power supplies?
5  Economy / Goods / Magic: the Gathering - Zendikar Fat Pack on: June 20, 2013, 03:19:58 PM
I bought several of these when the Zendikar set was released, because of the amazing full-card land art.  As an added bonus, apparently a very very small percentage of Zendikar boosters (there 8 booster packs per fat pack) contained authentic beta or unlimited cards that could be worth hundreds of dollars.

Anyway, I bought a box of these fat packs and opened a few, but I have several still brand new and sealed which I have decided to sell.

I am asking 2 BTC per fat pack, including basic domestic USA shipping.  Shipping insurance available for extra based on the actual cost to me.

I will not ship first, but I am perfectly willing to use a escrow (which may require additional charge for shipping).
6  Economy / Speculation / What do you see here? on: April 30, 2013, 01:41:33 PM
I've noticed an interesting thing.  Instead of looking at hourly or daily charts, look at the weekly average chart.

The spike and crash doesn't look so big, does it?  It looks a lot more like a tiny dip and then continued growth.

I wonder where we go from here?
7  Economy / Speculation / The end of tax-free internet shopping in america... on: April 24, 2013, 11:29:58 PM
http://www.nbcnews.com/business/end-tax-free-online-shopping-draws-nearer-6C9576838

Could thus be the spark bitcoin needs to reach a greater level of acceptance?  Is a bitcoin merchant required to collect tax, if his merchandice is not sold for USD?  Or if so, is there any reason he couldn't declare the USD value of his items being 10% of the bitcoin value and only charge a small fraction of the tax?

Actually, I'm a dummy.  Someone posted the same image already.

I swear I came up with this completely independently.
9  Economy / Speculation / We are in an Unsustainable Bubble on: April 15, 2013, 04:07:48 PM
Each day that the bitcoin price remains fairly stable, and doesn't deviate by more than 15% from $100, bitcoin speculator boredom increase.  Furthermore, this increase is exponential, the actual boredom level is doubling with each consecutive day.  You don't need to be a rocket scientist to realize that this sort of bubble can't last forever.

In a matter of days, the boredom level will exceed all realistic limits for boredom.  I expect a spectacular crash in stability in the next few days.
10  Economy / Speculation / how to short bitcoins, 3 easy steps on: April 13, 2013, 11:22:44 PM
I don't know why people think it's so hard or think you need some special trading platform to do it.

Step 1: buy bitcoins at price A, as an early adopter

Step 2: lend bitcoins to yourself, and sell at price B

Step 3: buy back those bitcoins lent to yourself, preferably at a lower price than B

If you didn't already buy bitcoin as an early adopter, buy coins now, and then wait 2-3 years before moving on to step 2, as I am certain current coin prices will feel like early adopter prices by then.
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / BFL is Probably doing fine financially. on: April 09, 2013, 02:41:23 PM
A lot of speculation about how they are bleeding money and losing pre-orders right and left.  However, think about the basis of their business for a minute.  If bitcoin fails, they fail.  Wouldn't it be logical for them to make at least a modest investment in bitcoins directly if they are going to invest millions in ASIC development?

I'm guessing that BFL probably has tens of million worth of bitcoin stockpiled (remember, they were around back when BTC was a small fraction of the current price), and is in no danger at all of going under or failing due to lack of funds.
12  Economy / Economics / could bitcoin eventually *cause* a global economy meltdown? on: April 04, 2013, 03:11:11 PM
I see a potential chain-reaction occurring in the future.

1- Some incident occurs, (Cyprus) which in the absence of bitcoin would cause a hiccup in the economy but not total collapse.

2- Citizens flee the euro in favor of bitcoin, but at this point bitcoin is more well known and instead of being the 0.001% who go for bitcoin, it's more like 5-10%.

3- The mass exodus from the euro causes further dips in other countries and encourages more and more bitcoin adoption, combined with the fact bitcoin climb higher than ever due to new adopters.

4- Panic gets the other 90% interested in bitcoin, total collapse of the euro as everyone tries to dump it for bitcoin or alternate investments.

5- Global collapse as China and USA trade is affected due to loss of major European economic influences.

In the absence of bitcoin, the "incident" would just result in a minor hiccup of the system, and would eventually get worked out, after a number of people have their lives ruined.  But with bitcoin added to the equation, it seems like things could tumble out of control very quickly in the right situation.

Impossible?  Plausible?  Good sci-fi movie idea?
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Can I double-spend against myself to fix a transaction sent with no fee? on: April 03, 2013, 04:47:29 PM
I send several bitcoins from one wallet of mine to another, using the default bitcoin client, version .8.1

The client didn't ask me to include a fee and I didn't think to add one manually.  It's now 2 hours later and the transaction is still sitting at 0 confirmations.  I understand that it may EVENTUALLY go through when some generous pool wins a block and decides to include some 0 fee transactions.  But, isn't it theoretically possible for me to simply double-spend those bitcoin, since they haven't actually be officially spent, and send the same transaction again, with a fee?

I just can't seem to figure out any way to fool the regular client into letting me do this.  I'm a little bit afraid to go searching google for a hacked client that will allow double-spending, because it sounds like the exact sort of program favored for planting trojan infections.

Is there a possibility of doing what I want?  Is there a legit tool or utility I can use to try to double-spend my coins?  Or do I just need to wait it out, and get my coins when they come?
14  Economy / Speculation / dwolla is down on: March 28, 2013, 04:47:18 PM

I wonder if we would be passing $100 already if it was possible for more people to deposit USD into mtgox?
15  Economy / Speculation / Difficulty vs Value, and Bubbles! on: March 28, 2013, 01:22:51 PM
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I noticed this today and thought some others might find it interesting:

Historically, as far as that goes with bitcoin, the first major bubble occurred after price exceeded difficulty for more than a few days.

More recently, our brief correction after hitting $74 last week occurred immediately follow a breakout of the value above difficulty.

However, difficulty adjusted a short time later and the current value per bitcoin is well supported.  We may break out again shortly, if value continues to increase, so it'll be interesting to see if there is a correction, following the pattern, until difficulty adjusts again and keeps everything in line.
16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / AMD Radeon "Sky Series" on: March 27, 2013, 10:15:58 PM
http://hothardware.com/News/AMD-Reveals-Radeon-Sky-Series-For-Cloud-Gaming-Previews-Radeon-HD-7990-at-GDC-2013/

Intended for cloud based gaming, but 3584 stream processors in one card is insane, makes me think these could do some nice bitcoin mining as well.

Probably cost an arm and a leg though, and they just might be hitting the market too late to be useful, since ASIC are finally coming online.

18  Economy / Speculation / If you bought in June of 2011, at the worst possible time... on: March 20, 2013, 06:29:59 PM
If you bought $10,000 worth of bitcoins at the peak before the crash of 2011, your investment would be worth double that today, approximately $20,000.

So, if you buy something, and 21 months later it is worth double what you paid for it, did you really fall victim to a bubble?  If so, I welcome further bubbles!  Bring on the bubbles!  I'd love to double my investment every 21 months!
19  Economy / Speculation / my wild prediction for tomorrow: cheap coins (but not for long) on: March 12, 2013, 01:43:59 AM
I suspect the fork issues going on now will scare out a lot of people, and value will plummet early in the AM tomorrow.  But I also suspect that a lot of long term investors who experienced the crash of '11 and kick themselves every day for failing to buy in at $3 will jump at the chance to get some bitcoins for under market value.  My guess is this will just be a very brief and temporary blip in the value of bitcoins, which quickly recovers thanks to lessons learned in the previous major crash.
20  Bitcoin / Project Development / www.btcboard.com - alternative bitcoin forums, perhaps something else? on: September 18, 2012, 03:25:46 PM
Looking for some ideas to use on the site.  I bought the domain btcboard.com a few months back when I was frustrated with how slow these forums were running and lack of tapatalk support, thinking I'd just create my own alternative bitcoin forum.  Since then these forums have been running pretty smoothly and I have lost much of my motivation.

Is there even a point in having another bitcoin discussion forum, does the web need one?  Should I use the domain for something else?

I'm not too attached to any particular idea at this point, and I'd be interested in working with someone motivated with a good plan if they can convince me they have a good idea.

http://www.btcboard.com/forum/ is all that is setup on the site so far.  I just haven't felt motivated enough to clean it up and fix the homepage.
