1  Other / Off-topic / How many of you use reddit? on: July 23, 2014, 01:35:50 AM
Just curious to see how many people on here use Reddit. I get most of my bitcoin news from their /r/bitcoin community, and also read a few other subreddits like /r/worldnews. Please vote in poll  Grin
2  Other / Politics & Society / Ohio 2014 Governor's Debate - Hilarity ensues! on: July 02, 2014, 11:33:20 PM
I ran across this video by total chance. Absolutely hilarity ensues when 2 "fringe" candidates for the Ohio governor's seat are invited to a debate. Is this really what people in Ohio are like?  Grin

I would totally vote for Harley Brown, though. Pro gay-marriage and doesn't like all of that political-correctness bullshit.

3  Other / Politics & Society / Is the US press really that free? on: July 01, 2014, 04:15:16 AM
I hear people say over and over that the US press/journalism is nothing like in authoritarian states like Russia and China where journalists can't write anything negative about the government. But is this really the case? Mainstream media in the US ignores the corruption of the US government, while reporters that try to break the silence by releasing important stories get harassed and silenced. Just recently I read about the story of James Risen, a New York Times journalist who is about to go to jail for refusing to give up a source he used to write his anti-government book "State of War".

What do you guys think?
4  Other / Off-topic / What is the thinking behind bailouts of large coprorations? on: June 25, 2014, 04:19:44 AM
So I looked at this list http://projects.propublica.org/bailout/list  and it looks pretty insane - 611 billion dollars total in bailout money for large corporations in the US. I'm assuming most of that is taxpayer money.

All I really know about the bailouts is that everyone seems to be very upset about them. And on the surface level I agree, why would failing companies be kept afloat by taxpayer money? The whole point of capitalism is that competition will make the best companies survive, and the ones that aren't up to the task are cut. But I'm not an economist and I don't know enough about this. What is the explanation behind the bailouts? Are they actually a good thing for the public and the economy? Why or why not?
5  Other / Politics & Society / What is going to replace neoliberalism? on: May 24, 2014, 08:57:00 PM
I've been reading about neoliberalism in my university course, and there are a lot of critiques that I agree with. It seems like neoliberalism is not working as an economic/political ideology and is only dragging us into further problems as economic polarization gets worse. So what do you think is going to replace it? Another form of capitalism? Socialism?
6  Economy / Service Discussion / Problems using Bitcoin on Overstock on: March 22, 2014, 08:10:36 AM
Not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask but...

I decided to try out purchasing some items with bitcoin on Overstock.com but I'm running into problems. I sent the exact amount of BTC requested to pay for my purchase but I got an error saying that I sent the wrong amount. I assume this has something to do with transaction fees? So a small amount was deducted for the transaction from my wallet to Overstock's wallet.

So I got my money refunded and tried again. Assuming that the transaction fee is anywhere from 0.0001 to 0.0005 (to the best of my knowledge),  I paid 0.0008 BTC over the requested amount. However I still received the "wrong BTC amount sent" error. Can somebody explain what the issue is?
7  Other / Off-topic / GIF Fun Thread! on: February 24, 2014, 09:28:51 AM
I'm bored so let's try something new. Your job in this thread is to respond to the previous poster's comment with a GIF, and then write something to keep the thread going. You can write literally anything, goofy and funny things are encouraged. Since I'm first I won't use a GIF. Let's have some fun!

10  Other / Off-topic / Gambled away my tuition bitcoins on: January 29, 2014, 03:36:27 AM
I feel like a fool right now and I really need to just talk about this. This isn't an attempt solicit donations.

I didn't lose a ridiculous amount of money. In fact, I *only* lost about 7.7 bitcoins, which would currently equate to about 6000 dollars. But the problem is that as a full-time university student, this was 90% of my savings. And since student loans don't cover the full cost of my expenses, I don't have any money after this semester.

I was never a gambler. I've never gone to a casino. I've never played poker. Hell, I never even bought a lottery ticket. But for some reason when I saw a post about a website called just-dice.com, where you can bet bitcoins on a dice game, I was immediately hooked. I created a plan for myself - I said that I would play careful and control my bets. I would withdraw BTC after winning 50% of my initial deposit. Everything was going rather smoothly; although I went down a few times, I ended up hitting 9.5 bitcoins yesterday.

But then I couldn't control myself and thought that I could keep going, even in face of mathematical logic. I lost 1.5 bitcoins. Then I deposted two more. I lost those too. Then again the same. Until I saw all my money vanish and I realized the horror of what I had done. In case anyone is curious, here is the image of my loss (-7.7btc).

I didn't sleep last night and all I could think about during class today was how much of a loser and moron I am. I just hate myself for throwing away my own hard-earned money.

edit: updated to final lost value of money from 5.7 to 7.7 I'm a broke ass fool.
