1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Scrypt ASICs compared on: March 19, 2014, 09:48:22 PM
So I can't find a thread that looks at all the different Scrypt ASICs that are around/due. AFAIK only the gridseed is actually available now, but there are more in development, so here's a quick compare/contrast thread.

FlowerTech Orchid                - 10MHs - 300W (30W/MHs) - $1900 ($190/MHs) - Q3 2014
AlphaTechnology Viper          - 5MHs  - 100W (20W/MHs)- $2230 ($446/MHs) - Q2/Q3 2014
Gridseed Infinity Mini Lil Bit   - 3MHs  - 70W  (23W/MHs) - $2285 ($762/MHs) - now

If anyone else knows about more ASICs that are due, feel free to add the details to the thread, and I'll keep this updated. Seems like GPUs might have another 6 months left, though perhaps the next generation of faster video RAM will change things.

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Installing a second GPU kills the hash rate on the first GPU on: January 27, 2014, 05:34:20 PM
I finally managed to get a 7970 up to speed today, so I then added a second card, a 5770 as it's low wattage and my PSU will handle it. As soon as I installed the second card, the hash rate on the first dropped by about 50%.  I've removed the second card, that made no difference, tried different slots with the 7970, even removed and reinstalled the SDK and Catalyst control centre, and I'm getting nowhere. I'm hoping at this stage to avoid re-installing Windows, anyone got any suggestions for what to try?
4  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Fried a generic 850w PSU with 2 R9 280Xs on: January 22, 2014, 03:13:50 PM
A cautionary tale about cheap/nasty PSUs; I've just watched sparks fly from my supposed 850w generic PSU when trying to run two 280Xs off it. One card was drawing around 320w, the other around 300w, the machine itself around 80w, so total power draw was in the region of 700w, i.e. 20% less than the PSU was supposed to be able to cope with.

This has got me slightly paranoid about a replacement PSU; I'm looking at the Corsair RM750, as it's gold rated and I read that Corsair are a good brand. Even without undervolting the cards, the maximum usage should be 700w, is that a reasonable ask of a decent 750w PSU?
5  Bitcoin / Mining / A possibly stupid question on: December 16, 2013, 12:23:47 AM
Having spent the past week getting my first 2 mining rigs up and running, I've read in the CGMiner readme files that the figure I should  ultimately be paying attention to is the WU, rather than the kh/s, despite the fact that everyone seems to obsess over this. I've been researching Block Erupters a bit, and I see 3 of them running at 1gh/s, but producing a WU of 13.8/minute, in contrast to the 435 WU/minute I'm getting from an HD7970 (yes it's a crappy version of this card, unfortunately). I understand that USB block erupters are using loads less power than a GPU, but given that the auction linked below is for a similar cost to the 7970 I bought while producing 23 WU/min rather than 435 WU/min, I'm wondering if I'm either missing something (my electricity costs to run the 7970 are 100 times that of the USB sticks, but still less than a dollar a day), or if Block Erupters are a waste of money.
