Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Good bye and farewell lite.coin-pool.com on: January 04, 2014, 07:24:23 PM

This pool will be CLOSING on January 11th, 2014. A hacker stole the LTC out of the wallet via a mysql injection exploit. I am pretty sure I fixed the hole but the damage was done. Anyone who had a balance before Jan 28th has been reset to 0 due to the LTC being stolen. Anyone who continued mining with the pool has been paid for all blocks found after block 487,780. Payouts are enabled again.

This pool never charged a fee to mine. That is why there is no funds to repay users. Most users had a small balance because they did withdraws on a regular basis. Several users lost 10+ LTC because they kept their LTC on the pool instead of withdrawing. I apologize for your loss. I never wanted this to happen but it has. I tried to dream up ways to keep the pool open and pay back users but none were feasible due to constant DOS attacks, increased costs to try to mitigate the attacks, and the server costs.

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Show me your Vanity (address). on: January 01, 2014, 07:07:13 PM
I have been playing with Vanitygen (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0) and see potential for making the various coin addresses more friendly and engaging than just a bunch of random stuff. Potential to build brand awareness is evident along with making the address look more acceptable to people.

I would like to see which address you have generated and which coin its for.

for example, I have for BTC:  1CoLin4dZkecGinkw2YcjioXJ2QUGLKbzm

and for a fun altcoin I am playing with GRDT:  GrdtCoinU2DuGbaQxNwjBkb5YaaeLKs2F9

4  Economy / Goods / Bitcoins being sold for 1 oz gold bullion coins in London on: December 09, 2013, 03:06:09 PM
An interesting development I have stumbled across, Bitcoins being sold for 1 oz gold bullion coins in London.

Sounds like the turbulence in the bitcoin exchange rate have woken someone up who thinks gold may be a safe bet?
