1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / HELP: 7x 7950s running on MSI Z77A-GD65? (reward for help) on: February 18, 2014, 09:26:28 PM
Hi all,

I am having problems trying to get 6 (or ideally 7) MSI 7950s running on my rig. At the moment I have 5 running stable on a MSI Z77A-GD65 and from looking around the boards, many people have had success getting 7 cards running on this motherboard. I have plenty of power and mem I think (tethered dual PSUs + 8gb mem). I've tried 13.1 and 12.2 drivers from TechPowerUp ...people seem to have divided opinions on the driver making a difference. I'm running Windows7 at the moment and was hoping to stay on this OS but can move if required.

I've read conflicting posts from people saying you don't need to presence short this particular board to get all 7 on there but have also read that you have to. So a little confused at why the separation in opinion.

Any advice would be much appreciated! I can swing a few LTC to anyone that can assist and help me get up and running.

Thanks,
Nick.
2  Bitcoin / Mining support / Molex to PCIe ...is it REALLY ok to do? on: December 11, 2013, 02:11:18 PM
Hi all,

I have been reading conflicting posts from people that say it is fine and people that say it is not.

I am setting up a 6 gpu (MSI 7960s) rig powered by a 1600W Lepa PSU on a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard. So I am short 2x PCIe cables.

I was going to get a couple of these... Athena CABLE-MPCIE4628 2 x 4Pin to 2 PCI-Express
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Athena-CABLE-MPCIE4628-2-x-4Pin-to-2-PCI-Express-/280686303841?pt=US_Power_Cables_Connectors&hash=item415a351a61

But then I started reading posts about this can cause all sorts of problems because the cards a too powerful and draw too much W. Even reviews that advise against it.
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_radeon_hd_7950_twin_frozer_iii_review,8.html
"...converting them from a Molex Peripheral connector anno 2012 we feel is a no-go"

So is there a definitive answer here or is it always going to be subjective? Really don't want to destroy my hardware or worse burn down my house while at work Smiley

Thanks for any advice!

Nick.
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Hardware advice on Power on: December 08, 2013, 08:06:15 PM
Hi all ...noob here looking into this mining business. Doing some research!

I've looked at everything but I am left with two questions - both relating to power...

- PSU: I'm looking at a 6x GPU setup. Is it better to go with one big 1600W PSU beast (like the LEPA 1600) or two 850W (like the Corsair AX850). Both high quality platinum 80Plus units. The 1600 I imagine would be far nosier than two tethered 850s. What would people advise?

More on the above. If you advise the later and suggest a 2 configuration setup then I have been looking at the Add2PSU board (http://www.add2psu.com/) ...I've been talking to them about how this unit is used and their customer service is amazing. The product seems perfect and takes all the hassle out of tethering. I'm just not sure how to hook it up so there is no risk of power feedback or any way I can cause damage to my rig.

- PCIe Powered Risers: From my research it appears that powered GPUs draw around 30W on the PCIe slot so a powered riser takes the stress off the m/b. I've read mixed replies from people saying all should be powered and some saying just the 1x to 16x. What's your take on this?

Also ...if you suggest a two PSU setup, would the same PSU powering the m/b also power the riser cables OR should the PSU powering the GPUs power both cables and card. From talking to Add2PSU it seems a 3rd PSU might be advised. 2x 850W tethered using their board and used to power all the cards, fans, hdd etc and the first PSU the master to power just the motherboard.

Thank you all for your advise. Much appreciated!

Nick.
