2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / We Can Be Heroes - people are dying of famine on: March 28, 2012, 03:21:03 AM
So I have recently become addicted to comics. And I have started to notice heaps of ads in DC Comics about the huge starvation epidemic taking place in Africa. Here is what is printed in the back of Aquaman #6. Note I hate Aquaman but love Mera that's why I bought this issue. Anyway here is what is printed:

"Countries in the Horn of Africa
(Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya)
are facing the worst drought
in 60 years, causing a severe
hunger crisis. According to the
U.S. government, the crisis
is unlike any other in terms
of displacement, death and
starvation of the population. More
than 13 million people are in need
of critical assistance. In Somalia
alone, more than 250,000 people
face starvation. Hundreds of
thousands have fled to refugee
camps seeking help. The situation
is so critical that the United
Nations officially declared famine
for the first time in 21 years.

Humanitarian aid organizations are
on the ground working to provide
much needed relief to the drought
and famine-stricken areas. But
they need more help. They need
our help.

Join the Justice League and
DC Entertainment in raising
awareness and funds for three
nonprofit partners, Save the
Children, International Rescue
Committee and Mercy Corps,
who are delivering aid where it is
needed most. DC Entertainment
will match donations 100%, and
50% of the purchase price from
We Can Be Heroes merchandise
will go to saving lives.

The people of the Horn of Africa need us now.
One small act can make you a hero.

Give Now: www.WeCanBeHeroes.org"

Normally I detest charity for the destructive dependencies it creates, but this is something that even I see as vital. As a community I do not see why we cannot help. I'm sure there are some coin farmers who can think up innovative ways to help.

What say you ladies and gentlemen?

DO NOT DONATE TO MY ADDRESS, we need to sort out a secure system.
3  Bitcoin / Mining / Internet Disconnecting - Losing Money, Help - 1.5 BTC Reward on: March 26, 2012, 08:07:06 PM
hello everyone,

I have a 1.5 BTC reward up for grabs to whomever can help solve my internet woes

First up, I am mining on a 3G mobile broadband connection. The place I am living in has no phoneline, but it has fixed electricity @ $10 a fortnight (hehe) so I am quite happy to stay

The problem is that I go to bed and wake up to find that all my hardware is offline, the single point of failure being a lost connection

I have considered an alarm on disconnect but honestly, i'd rather not be woken up every night along with waking up the neighbours with a blarring alarm (loud speakers)

So this is the software I am working with:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

now I basically wake up and have to click that damned connect button, there is no auto reconnect feature anywhere in the software, I am a computer programmer (out of work for like 3-4 years now though) so I can understand advanced concepts

I just want to be up 24/7! can anyone here help, pretty please with 1.5BTC on top?

cheers

4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Namecoin - one huge step closer to being a big market player on: June 20, 2011, 07:04:45 PM
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/06/20/domain.names/index.html?hpt=hp_bn7

"(CNN) -- Coming soon to a website near you: dot-anything
A group charged with overseeing the development of the Internet voted Monday to relax the rules on website naming conventions -- potentially triggering a virtual domain name gold rush to rival the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.
At a meeting in Singapore, the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers -- also known by its acronym ICANN -- approved the change to allow domain names using any combination of letters and numbers, including non-Latin characters.
"ICANN has opened the Internet's naming system to unleash the global human imagination," said Rod Beckstrom, president and CEO of ICANN. "We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind."
In past years, there have been requests for new top level domains such as .kids, .shop, .nyc and -- for porn sites -- .xxx.
The group said "strong efforts were made to address the concerns of all interested parties, and to ensure that the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet are not compromised.""

I'm pretty sure this increases the chance we will see .bit domains that just work.. What do you guys think?

Namecoin helps the stability of Bitcoin lets not forget that!

6  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Quantum Computing on: June 13, 2011, 04:08:35 PM
I think there needs to be a technical discussion on this; I put to everyone a simple question:

Once Quantum Computing is in a form that is available to any social entity (ie not just a lab, but a government/company/person can buy one) will this seriously threaten if not outright destroy bitcoin mining? And the entire Bitcoin economy?

Thanks
7  Other / Meta / Should we have mining subcategories? on: June 12, 2011, 11:14:08 AM
Consider:

At the rate of current influx of people & now stickied threads that are taking up the top half of the page and the fact that it gives preference to the largest pools; Should we have a few Sub-categories

ie:

Mining Pools
Getting Started
Mining Software/Miners
Profitability and Speculation
Mining Hardware

+ what other brilliant ideas the community comes up with

cheers

13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Help the newb, how is my bitcoin address tied to me? on: June 03, 2011, 01:44:55 PM
I am confused, maybe I am just reallllly tired; i've dedicated my life pretty much to being a geek so feel free to ridicule me if it's an obvious oversight here

how is the number of bitcoins for the address stored?
where is it stored?
how is it secured?
if I format, and lose my address, do I lose all my bitcoin cash?
what the hell stops someone else using my address?
what lets me use my own address?

I am so confused  Huh

edit: I guess I want to know, how do I CONTROL my address; protect my assets so to speak

maybe the whole lack-of-account creation has completely thrown me :/ what generated that address anyway?

thanks guys
