2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / keep seeing 'thought experiment' in reference to bitcoins on: July 04, 2011, 09:11:01 AM
please.. its NOT a thought experiment, its becoming en vogue to overuse this term... a thought experiment is like schroedingers cat, where nothing is actually done, just all in their head.

there are two ways i see this term overused one is 'thought'.. bitcoins isnt just a thought, there are thousands of people using it today
and the other is 'experiment'.. an experiment isnt just an idea or a hypothesis, it's a scientific procedure whose purpose is to MEASURE results.
With a thought experiment you play out the experiment mentally with the purpose of getting at RESULTS - not to pontificate or muse with stupid theories.

so if u have an idea or a HYPOTHESIS call it that.. dont call it a thought experiment, it cheapens einstein, schroedinger, etc.. when you overuse this term and yer too retarded to even know what it means.

3  Bitcoin / Mining support / Unstable Rig - how to diagnose on: July 04, 2011, 07:39:20 AM
4 x 6870's
biostar 890FXA
hextec 1050W power supply
2 risers for the gfx cards

stock voltage/clocks
default fan control on ubuntu 11.04

i got 4 rigs running and this particular one always seems to die on me, hard crash 4-48 hours after rebooting.  Problem is it runs for at least a few hours so im never able to catch it int the act.

Anyone know how to diagnose this problem?  I'm looking for tips/tricks something beyond standard trial and error.. maybe some kind of monitor program, crash log file i dont know about, whatever.

8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / WHERES THE MONEY? on: June 24, 2011, 07:57:39 AM
Guys this is the #1 question u should be asking right now and this drives at the heart of human motives.  Let me explain to you what's probably going on here

These guys are running an exchange/brokerage, whatever, maybe not legally so but typically the way companies like this are set up is

they have profits/operating expenses, etc (this for mt gox would be their 1.3% fees for profits, expenses would be rent , salary, utilities, etc)
but there's also another account which is typically in a TRUST that holds CLIENT BALANCEs.. to cover withdrawals and deposits.   This trust typically
put ths bank signer as a lawyer or accountant or some impartial third party who's fiduciary duty is to make sure THE SHIT DONT GET STOLEN.

Why... all this red tape and overhead?  Well... we've learned over the last 100 years or so that when u dont have this third party.. THE SHIT ALWAYS GETS STOLEN.

So here's what could very well be happening.  Mercedez or whatever gets fast and loose with the company books.. sure he's making alot of money but he overextends and buys i dont know.. a luxury apartment in tokyo,
or maybe he buys alot of call options on a 'sure thing', figuring he can put the profits back i nthe company account before anyone notices.

Now think what started happening the week before the hack?  They were having trouble with the 'dwolla API' and people were slow in getting money out.   This means he's using peter to pay paul, banking that
not everyone will ask for withdrawals at once, etc .  But then what happens? a hack.. a panic.. suddenly everyone wants their money out.  They issue reversals thru their banks and credit cards.

Only the money isnt there anymore.. because the owners have been paying it out to themselves as dividends, or salaries (whatever is most tax efficient), or investing it in stocks, or just outright hitting the casino with it, because there was never a fiduciary trust set up to prevent

when a crisis like this .. THE FIRST THING THAT SHOULD HAPPEN IS THEY SHOULD RELEASE A FINANCIAL STATEMENT (CURRENT BALANCE) THRU AN ACCOUNTANT FIRM IN JAPAN THAT HAS THEIR FIDICUIARY ACCOUNT BALANCE AND MAKE SURE ITS NOT ZERO!  Because if they cant produce this balance.. guess what guys.. you can be sure it IS zero.  Right now ALL  REAL information is going through 1 or 2 guys.. period.  This is a CLASSIC sign of fraud.

Them not releasing this information to the public is A MAJOR PROBLEM.  Then they start playing games with stalling and approving low balance accoutns first, cuz if theres a panic its not the price of bitcoins they worry about its their own solvency.

PS THIS IS HYPOTHETHICAL ( I DONT WANNA GET SUED FOR LIBEL )..  But this little scenario plays out  TIME AND TIME AGAIN and is the first place your thoughts should go
WHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS THE MONEY GUYS? Its not 'paranoid' to want to see the trust account balance, its  STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

13  Bitcoin / Mining support / advice on how to overclock 6870 on ubuntu 11.04 32-bit linux on: June 18, 2011, 09:06:29 PM
I've seen alot of threads regarding 6990 and other cards.

I would like advice on what utility to use, what clock/core settings to try.  Where to get the software too!

As of now I'm running around 250 MHash with default settings.  What kind of speeds can i get using just the amdoverdrive tool, without flashing BIOS

14  Bitcoin / Mining / Please bail me out - I'm an idiot bought mining gear at the peak on: June 18, 2011, 07:03:58 AM
I'm one of the newbs who got a bunch of 6870s and have em running.. 3.6 gigahash installed, and im calling newegg monday to see what i can return unopened.  I may keep a small farm going just for shits and grins but at chicago power rates of 15 kWh and 20% difficulty increases every 14 days I will never recover my costs (not even close).

Extra equipment i bought:

700$ electrician work, (individual circuits, breaking out circuits near a window for good airflow, etc)
100$ various fans
50$ tables/benches
80$ 16 port switch
10000$ computer equipment (6870 radeons, motherboards, semprons, 1000w power supplies, PCIe risers, ethernet cables etc)
40 hours work setting it up
(insurance, risk of fire/flood damage, massive heat generated, the 50 flies that are in my house because i opened a window near my set up to deal with heat)

Chicago electricity:  15c/ kWh (this is my #1 cost and its MAJOR)

Basically I'm in hell.. I'm praying for a miracle and all i see is MORE posts about people buying 6990's and other cards that are even LESS efficient than mine.. and I now realize that i'm basically up against a bunch of enthusiasts who really dont care about the economics of this at all, they just think its 'cool'

If anyone needs any of this equipment please make me an offer near newegg type prices, I will give advice on how to set it up, etc.  You can pay me paypal, bitcoin, cash, however.  I would like to move this stuff in bulk if possible, if you are planning on starting an operation or are a reseller, etc.

I can help with running it, I have a about 3.5 gigahash mining right now rest is in boxes, unopened.  If you are in a lower cost state or mooching off a college campus you can probably run this profitably.

15  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Trouble getting more than 2 radeon's on a motherboard to run on: June 16, 2011, 09:50:47 PM
using the 890FXA lines from both biostar and MSI, and i always have trouble running more than 2.  I'm using either 4x5830's or 4x6870's in my setup.

The biostar has alternating pci16x 4x 16x 1x slots.  The 16x are red and the 4x,1x are white, the white slots are real close to the red slots so its impossible to put the cards side by side, so i use risers.

Everything is fine as long as im using one from the first 2 and one from the last 2, but when i try to put a gfx card in a red slot then one right next to it in the white slot (with a riser) it fails.

MSI has enough board space to allow all 4 to fit fine (jammed together but fits), but again same problem more than 2 and caput.

I'm using a 1080 watt Xforce power supply it has 4 12 volt rails with 20+amps on each rail, so should be ample power.

The funny thing is when i boot ubuntu on the biostar with more than 2, it frequently has weird behavior like artifacts, and the login window doesnt appear but the purple background does, etc etc.

Anyone have any ideas?
16  Bitcoin / Mining / 5830 only getting 215 mhash OC'd on: June 10, 2011, 04:15:55 PM
running at 400 mhz mem clock, 875 mhz GPU using the ATI overdrive
using asus m3n7d-2 mobo with phenom x4.

Miner: guiminer, no extra flags (they dont seem to make a difference)

any reason why its so low? thought this was sposed to be sexy 300 megahash monster.

is it cuz i skipped the hash browns at breakfast this morning (too many carbs)
