1  Other / Beginners & Help / [History] Wei Dai's B-Money on: June 18, 2020, 04:43:08 PM
I like reading about the greatest contributors to cryptography and also, searching and finding the accounts of the people who have contributions in the cryptocurrency especially Bitcoin, and upon searching, I came across on the account of Wei Dai. and it interests me on what his contributions are.
So here are some little background about B-money and small biography oh Wei Dai.

Wei Dai
-According to different sources, Wei Dai graduated from the University of Washington, having a degree in computer science but other sources says he's a software engineer. He worked in the Cryptography Research Group at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. Wei Dai was a member of Cypherpunks, Extropians, and SL4 mailing lists in the 1990s. He is widely known for his different contributions to cryptography. He developed programs such as: (you can see all of his contributions and programs at his website)
  • Crypto++ cryptographic library
  • B-money
  • Cryptocurrency System
  • Co-proposed the VMAC message authentication algorithm.
-Wei Dai also listed as an inventor on U.S. patents 5724279 and 6081598 which were assigned to Microsoft.
  • 5724279-Computer-implemented method and computer for performing modular reduction
  • 6081598-Cryptographic system and method with fast decryption

Here is Wei Dai's Bitcointalk account:

B-Money
-B-money is simply and anonymous distributer digital currency or electronic cash system through computer network trade with each other that is verified with SHA-1 hash functions. In 1998, Dai helped to spark interest in cryptocurrencies with the publication of the B-Money white paper, In the paper, Dai outlines the basic properties of all modern-day cryptocurrency systems:
-The white paper proposes an alternative money creation that is divided into four phases:
  • Planning
  • Bidding
  • Computation
  • Money Creation
-"Wei Dai outlined his version of a crypto-anarchist dream for a community where violence would not be possible due to the fact that the physical locations and real identities of people would be obscured from public knowledge. Due to the lack of violence, Dai believed there would be no need for governments and the institution would become permanently unnecessary. However, Dai recognized that for his dream to become a reality, a community that could communicate and transact in a peer-to-peer way would have to be created."
-Wei Dai was the author of B-money, in which the protocols of B-Money which Bitcoin was based on. The concept of proof-of-work, the broadcast and signing of transactions as well as the decentralized ledger come from B-money.
-The incentivization of currency creators through the mining process, as is seen in bitcoin, is also based on Dai’s proposal. It is important to note that Dai’s paper on b-money was cited as a reference by bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

Subject: Citation of your b-money page

I was very interested to read your b-money page.  I'm getting ready to release a paper that expands on your ideas into a complete working system.
Adam Back (hashcash.org) noticed the similarities and pointed me to your site. I need to find out the year of publication of your b-money page for the
citation in my paper.  It'll look like:

[1] W. Dai, "b-money," http://www.weidai.com/bmoney.txt, (2006?).

You can download a pre-release draft at

Trivia:
Wei was named after Wei Dai which is the smallest denomination of ether.
1 Ether = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 Wei (10^18)

-Wei Dai is Satoshi? what do you think.

3  Economy / Collectibles / [History] The Casascius Physical Bitcoin (Updated) on: November 16, 2019, 08:08:42 AM
Maybe some of us don't know some important things that happen in the long run of Bitcoin, People are full of questions and I wonder if there is a physical Bitcoin and through researching, I found a man named Casascius.

-Mike Caldwell also known as Casascius, Mike Caldwell is a software Engineer at his home in Sandy, Utah. An early bitcoin adopter and Bitcoin enthusiast that has many contributions in Bitcoin, Caldwell wanted to help popularize the cryptocurrency, but he, too, doesn't like the idea of Bitcoin's intangibility. The physical Bitcoin creator.

-It all starts with an idea to make physical Bitcoins Making a real tangible bitcoin that actually conveys BTC because why not? I think it's a practical idea to promote bitcoin and cryptocurrency more and during those days only a few people know what is the Internet and have a computer.
-In this post, we can see Mike Caldwell enthusiasm towards bitcoin and what he does to make it successful.
Why a physical bitcoin?
"I just want bitcoin to succeed"
-Mike Caldwell

-On 6 September 2011, Mike Caldwell began minting physical Bitcoins, naming the coins Casascius Coins. And put it up to market on September 7, 2011 CASASCIUS PHYSICAL BITCOIN - In Stock Now! (pic)
Coming Very Soon, a real Bitcoin you can hold! (and is worth 1 BTC), Casascius coins are available in the denomination of 1, 10, 25, 100, and 1000 BTC increments.

ITEM DESCRIPTIONS

Original series 1 BTC coin
The original minted series was 1 BTC made of solid Brass.
Year printed on coins: 2011
A spelling error can be found in the small lettering of the hologram: “CASACIUS” instead of “CASASCIUS”
Casascius has stated that no more than 11,000 may be produced
Second series 1 BTC coin

Second series 1 BTC
Casascius coin was also made of solid brass

Thickness: About 3mm
Each coin comes individually wrapped in a clear plastic pouch.
Zeroes and ones on the back encode the message “Bitcoin: an idea too big to fail”

100 BTC gold plated bar

1000 BTC 1 troy ounce gold coin
Dimensions: 8cm x 4cm x 0.6cm
This item is presently listed for sale only through MemoryDealers.com

How does it work?
  • According to the website "Each Coin has its own Bitcoin address and a redeemable “private key” which is covered by a hologram. To read the private key inside the coin the person need to peel the hologram, once peeled and redeemed the coin will no longer have any Bitcoin value. These coins are designed for face-to-face transactions."
  • According to Casascius, there will never be more than 11,000 of the original series coins, probably much fewer than this. This coin can be identified by a misspelling of "CASASCIUS" in the small background print (the middle S is missing). As of December 2011 I have made about 3500, and the final count will be further limited by other factors: the percentage of the uniquely numbered holograms that get ruined from the start, many of the sold coins have been opened and redeemed, some of the holograms have gone into the 25 BTC coins, and am not sure if I will keep doing them by hand myself if I can manage series 2 better.
  • So in September 2011, he began making physical coins as vessels. Inside of each, he embedded a piece of paper that contained a bitcoin private key, which he protected with a tamper-resistant hologram sticker. As for the word casascius, it was half acronym (derived from the phrase “call a spade a spade”), half Latin-sounding suffix (“cius”).

Counterfeit Casascius Coins
-There have been multiple reports of fake Casascius coins being circulated in the market. The counterfeit and unauthorized coins even appear to mimic the spelling error from the Series 1 coins.

Why does it stop?
  • The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a branch of the Treasury Department, informed Casascius that minting physical coin and transmitting money requires state license and federal level registration. And thus from Nov 27, 2013, onwards, the sale is suspended for items that contain digital bitcoins, the current items in the sale does not contain bitcoins.
  • On November 23, Mike Caldwell suspended sales of items that contain digital bitcoins. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a branch of the Treasury Department, informed him before, that minting physical bitcoins qualifies him as a money transmitter business, which means he needs to register at the federal level and probably get state licenses too.

4  Local / Others (Pilipinas) / [Gabay] Paano mabawi ang nahacked, nalocked o nawalang account on: August 18, 2019, 03:57:06 PM

Great Arkansas [GUIDE] How to Create a Strong/Secure Password

BITCOIN ADDRESS FORMAT
Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account <account> has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to <email>. The current date is <date>.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----
<insert address here>
<insert signature here>
-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Here is the unedited post where I posted that address:

ETHEREUM ADDRESS FORMAT
Code:
-----BEGIN ETHEREUM SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account <account> has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to <email>. The current date is <date>.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----
<insert address here>
<insert signature here>
-----END ETHEREUM SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Here is the unedited post where I posted that address:

Pano mag sign ng Bitcointalk Address

-Para sa mga Bitcoin Address sundan lamang ang post ni
uelque [PH] Paano mag-sign ng message?!

Recommended Application:
-BitcoinCore

-Para naman sa Ethereum Address sundan ang post ni
Daboy_Lyle [TAGALOG ]Tutorial on How to Sign a message on your MetaMask with MEW.

Recommended Application:
-MyCrypto

7  Other / Serious discussion / What is the right religion? who to worship? on: September 16, 2018, 06:10:25 PM
Based on the dictionary Religion is a particular system of faith worship and beliefs. It keeps getting in my mind about what is the right religion? who to worship? because according to Adherents there are 4,300 religions in the world and all of them worship different "Gods" or deities like Jesus Christ, Allah, Shiva, Buddha, Odin, Zeus, Coatlicue other religions worship nature, sun, moon and animals. Although some of it teaches morality and unite people I guess it is just a kind of scam.

They say "Religion is just a community or a credo or an axiom with different prayers, symbols, beliefs with no proofs or an evidence of their gods". I want to know your opinion about this.

- What is the silent letter in the word scent is it the S or the C?

-If you drop the soap on the floor does the floor gets clean? or the soaps get dirty?

-Who closes the bus door if the bus driver gets off?

- 1x0=0 is it because any number you multiply to 1 is the number itself or any number you multiply to 0 is 0?

9  Other / Serious discussion / Catholic Hierarchy on: August 19, 2018, 05:46:15 PM
Here in the Philippines, the Catholic has a huge influence on many people Religion in the Philippines is marked by a majority of people being adherents of the Christian faith. According to the statistics, at least 92% of the population is Christian; about 81% belong to the Roman Catholic Church, I think the cause of the poverty here in the Philippines is our religion let me make an example.

Overpopulation here in the Philippines is a great problem our current population is 106,729,899 so our government create a law called RH Bill or Reproductive Health Bill that would teach the students about sexual reproduction and the use of contraceptives but the Catholic opposes it and said "contraception is corruption" or they call it the “anti-life” that law has been debated for more than 13 years and has been signed but not fully implemented.

The Catholic Churches here doesn't have to pay tax and no one in the government dares to do it because of the criticizing of the peoples imagine the amount of money they get every mass. Churches get tax considerations in this city-state not because they represent religions, but because they register as charities and that’s the basis of their tax exemption. The transparency that is unheard of today in the management of church funds, is another reason why churches must pay taxes like the rest of us.
Based on the news reports submitted to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) show that the Church and affiliate Catholic groups are top stockholders in companies such as the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Philex Mining Corporation (PX), San Miguel Corporation (SMC), Ayala Corporation (AC), and Phinma Corporation (PHN), among others.

I'm not anti-Catholic, actually I am a Catholic
IF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF EVIL WHY DO THEY ASK FOR IT?

13  Other / Beginners & Help / [Advice] The third circle of hell on: July 17, 2018, 07:52:35 PM
While reading and scrolling through some topics and some replies here I just notice that there are so many Jr. Members or the ones who enter the Third Circle of Hell (well that's just a site that I read "The Nine Circles of Hell" that I think is made by satanslave that I saw from a thread of Fittotalk) going back I also see the struggle of the Jr. Members to get the 10 merits required to get out and to be promoted to a new rank I know that you already read some guides on how to have some merits this is the same just the same but this shit topic of mine is more like a psychology guide and tips and tricks something like that so lets go to the first one

1. STOP THE BOUNTY HUNT AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE FORUM
-Well, one that I notice that some of the Jr. Members that have 0 merits and 200+ activities is that they are only doing bounty reports basically you cannot get merits from that 13 pages of posting of facebook and twitter shits just go out to the Bounties(Altcoins) thread and explore the forum more there are some people that need your help or maybe some information that you might know just help the others.

2. STOP PUTTING YOUR CAT OVER THE KEYBOARD
-I also notice that some of us cannot construct a good English sentence or paragraph properly but that is not a problem you can post on your Local Board and use your own mother tongue but basically, the English is more dominant in this forum because that is the universal language so we need to fix and learn some of English words and practice more there are some apps like Duolingo that helps a lot but don't be sad or embarrassed English is not the measurement of your own intellect it is just a language but if you don't know the difference between your/you're, there/their, these/this fck you need to go to school.

3. DON'T BEG FOR MERITS EARN THEM
-Well this is the most important part don't beg for merits just don't because the boogeyman will grab you while you were sleeping  and take you to another dimension where he could eat you, just joking you little merit beggar please don't beg for merits I feel sympathy and pity towards them it's like asking for food to someone you didn't know, in my experience it feels better when you  go to your profile and you will see your merit goes it just feel good if you work hard for something just don't beg.

That's all well I experienced all of that but it will help you though I think I will update it if I think of another reason don't be mad at me just sayin'.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / How to use Ignore? on: July 17, 2018, 06:46:18 PM

First, you need to choose what kind of indicators you need to develop your own Strategy
What type of indicator a trader uses to develop a strategy depends on what type of strategy he or she intends on the building. This relates to trading style and risk tolerance. A trader who seeks long-term moves with large profits might focus on a trend-following strategy, and, therefore, utilize a trend-following indicator such as a moving average. A trader interested in small moves with frequent small gains might be more interested in a strategy based on volatility. Again, different types of indicators may be used for confirmation.

WHAT IS TRADING INDICATORS?
  • An indicator simply manipulates price data using a mathematical formula. The indicator shows a visual representation of the mathematical formula and price inputs. To a skilled chart reader or trader an indicator often won't reveal more than what is visible just by analyzing the price chart (or volume) without any indicators.
  • That said since there is so much to be analyzed on a price chart an indicator helps simplify it. This is why indicators are so alluring to new traders. Instead of learning to how to identify a trend on the price chart, they try to find an indicator that will identify the trend and trend reversals for them.
  • Indicator based trading is relying on indicators to analyze the price and provide trade signals. Many indicators provide a specific trade signal which alerts the trade that now is the time to take a trade.

TREND INDICATORS

MOVING AVERAGES
  • A moving average (MA) is a widely used indicator in technical analysis that helps smooth out price action by filtering out the “noise” from random price fluctuations. It is a trend-following or lagging, indicator because it is based on past prices.
  • Moving averages lag current price action because they are based on past prices; the longer the time period for the moving average, the greater the lag. Thus, a 200-day MA will have a much greater degree of lag than a 20-day MA because it contains prices for the past 200 days. The length of the moving average to use depends on the trading objectives, with shorter moving averages used for short-term trading and longer-term moving averages more suited for long-term investors. The 50-day and 200-day MAs are widely followed by investors and traders, with breaks above and below this moving average considered to be important trading signals.
  • Moving averages also impart important trading signals on their own, or when two averages cross over. A rising moving average indicates that the security is in an uptrend, while a declining moving average indicates that it is in a downtrend. Similarly, upward momentum is confirmed with a bullish crossover, which occurs when a short-term moving average crosses above a longer-term moving average. Downward momentum is confirmed with a bearish crossover, which occurs when a short-term moving average crosses below a longer-term moving average.

MOVING AVERAGE CONVERGENCE DIVERGENCE (MACD)
  • Moving average convergence divergence (MACD) is a trend-following momentum indicator that shows the relationship between two moving averages of prices. The MACD is calculated by subtracting the 26-day exponential moving average (EMA) from the 12-day EMA. A nine-day EMA of the MACD called the "signal line", is then plotted on top of the MACD, functioning as a trigger for buy and sell signals.
METHODS
  • Crossovers
-As shown in the chart above, when the MACD falls below the signal line, it is a bearish signal, which indicates that it may be time to sell. Conversely, when the MACD rises above the signal line, the indicator gives a bullish signal, which suggests that the price of the asset is likely to experience upward momentum. Many traders wait for a confirmed cross above the signal line before entering into a position to avoid getting "faked out" or entering into a position too early, as shown by the first arrow.
  • Divergence
-When the security price diverges from the MACD, it signals the end of the current trend. For example, a stock price that is rising and a MACD indicator that is falling could mean that the rally is about to end. Conversely, if a stock price is falling and the MACD is rising, it could mean that a bullish reversal could occur in the near-term. Traders often use divergence in conjunction with other technical indicators to find opportunities.
  • Dramatic Rise
-When the MACD rises dramatically - that is, the shorter moving average pulls away from the longer-term moving average - it is a signal that the security is overbought and will soon return to normal levels. Traders will often combine this analysis with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or other technical indicators to verify overbought or oversold conditions.

PARABOLIC SAR
  • The parabolic SAR, or parabolic stop and reverse, is a popular indicator that is mainly used by traders to determine the future short-term momentum of a given asset. The indicator was developed by the famous technician J. Welles Wilder Jr. and can easily be applied to a trading strategy, enabling a trader to determine where stop orders should be placed. (The calculation of this indicator is rather complex and goes beyond the scope of how it is practically used in trading.)
  • The parabolic SAR indicator is graphically shown on the chart of an asset as a series of dots placed either above or below the price (depending on the asset's momentum). A small dot is placed below the price when the trend of the asset is upward, while a dot is placed above the price when the trend is downward. As you can see from the chart below, transaction signals are generated when the position of the dots reverses direction and is placed on the opposite side of the price.
  • As you can see from the right side of the chart, using this indicator by itself can often lead to entering/exiting a position prematurely. So, many traders will choose to place their trailing stop-loss orders at the SAR value, because a move beyond this will signal a reversal, causing the trader to anticipate a move in the opposite direction. In a sustained trend, the parabolic SAR is usually far enough removed from price to prevent a trader from being stopped out of a position on temporary retracements that occur during a long-term trend, enabling the trader to ride the trend for a long time and capture substantial profits.

MOMENTUM INDICATORS

STOCHASTICS
  • The stochastic oscillator is a momentum indicator comparing the closing price of a security to the range of its prices over a certain period of time. The sensitivity of the oscillator to market movements is reducible by adjusting that time period or by taking a moving average of the result.
  • FORMULA
Stochastics is measured with the %K line and the %D line, and it is the %D line that we follow closely, for it will indicate any major signals in the chart. Mathematically, the %K line looks like this:
%K = 100[(C – L5close)/(H5 – L5)]
C = the most recent closing price
L5 = the low of the five previous trading sessions
H5 = the highest price traded during the same 5 day period.
The formula for the more important %D line looks like this:
%D = 100 X (H3/L3)

We show you these formulas for interest's sake only. Today's charting software does all the calculations, making the whole technical analysis process so much easier and thus more exciting for the average investor. For the purpose of realizing when a stock has moved into an overbought or oversold position, stochastics is the favoured technical indicator as it is easy to perceive and has a high degree of accuracy.

  • The K line is the fastest and the D line is the slower of the two lines. The investor needs to watch as the D line and the price of the issue begin to change and move into either the overbought (over the 80 line) or the oversold (under the 20 line) positions. The investor needs to consider selling the stock when the indicator moves above the 80 level. Conversely, the investor needs to consider buying an issue that is below the 20 line and is starting to move up with increased volume.

COMMODITY CHANNEL INDEX (CCI)
  • The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) is a momentum-based technical trading tool used most often to help determine when an investment vehicle is reaching a condition of being overbought or oversold. As the price of an investment moves continually in one direction, these indicators help traders to determine when an institutional conviction may be changing, and a pause or pull-back in the market price may be coming. This information can permit traders to take profit or add to an existing position following a price pullback.
  • First developed by Donald Lambert, the CCI is a stochastic oscillator that measures the change in an instrument's price relative to a pre-defined moving average (MA) of the price divided by 1.5% of a normal deviation (D) from that average. Oscillating indicators, in general, are technical trading tools whose calculated values move back and forth between two pre-determined levels, the top level indicating a market that is in the condition of being overbought and the bottom one indicating a market that is in the condition of being oversold.

RELATIVE STRENTGH INDEX (RSI)
  • The Relative Strength Index - RSI is a momentum indicator that measures the magnitude of recent price changes to analyze overbought or oversold conditions. It is primarily used to attempt to identify overbought or oversold conditions in the trading of an asset.
  • The RSI provides a relative evaluation of the strength of a security's recent price performance, thus making it a momentum indicator. RSI values range from 0 to 100. The default time frame for comparing up periods to down periods is 14, as in 14 trading days.
  • Traditional interpretation and usage of the RSI is that RSI values of 70 or above indicate that a security is becoming overbought or overvalued, and therefore may be primed for a trend reversal or corrective pullback in price. On the other side of RSI values, an RSI reading of 30 or below is commonly interpreted as indicating an oversold or undervalued condition that may signal a trend change or corrective price reversal to the upside.

FORMULA
RSI = 100 - 100 / (1 + RS)

VOLATILITY INDICATORS

BOLLINGER BANDS
  • A Bollinger Band®, developed by famous technical trader John Bollinger, is plotted two standard deviations away from a simple moving average.
  • Standard deviation is a mathematical formula that measures volatility, showing how the stock price can vary from its true value. By measuring price volatility, Bollinger Bands® adjust themselves to market conditions. This is what makes them so handy for traders: they can find almost all of the price data needed between the two bands. Read on to find out how this indicator works, and how you can apply it to your trading. (For more on volatility, see Tips For Investors In Volatile Markets.)
  • Bollinger Bands consists of a centre line and two price channels (bands) above and below it. The centre line is an exponential moving average; the price channels are the standard deviations of the stock being studied. The bands will expand and contract as the price action of an issue becomes volatile (expansion) or becomes bound into a tight trading pattern (contraction).

  • In this example of Bollinger Bands®, the price of the stock is bracketed by an upper and lower band along with a 21-day simple moving average. Because standard deviation is a measure of volatility when the markets become more volatile, the bands widen; during less volatile periods, the bands' contract.

AVERAGE TRUE RANGE (ATR)
  • The average true range (ATR) is a technical analysis indicator that measures volatility by decomposing the entire range of an asset price for that period. Specifically, ATR is a measure of volatility introduced by Welles Wilder in his book, "New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems." The true range indicator is the greatest of the following: current high less the current low, the absolute value of the current high less the previous close and the absolute value of the current low less the previous close. The average true range is a moving average, generally 14 days, of the true ranges.
  • Wilder originally developed the average true range (ATR) for commodities, but the indicator can also be used for stocks and indices. Simply put, a stock experiencing a high level of volatility has a higher ATR, and a low volatility stock has a lower ATR. The ATR may be used by market technicians to enter and exit trades, and it is a useful tool to add to a trading system. It was created to allow traders to more accurately measure the daily volatility of an asset by using simple calculations. The indicator does not indicate the price direction; rather it is used primarily to measure volatility caused by gaps and limit up or down moves. The ATR is fairly simple to calculate and only needs historical price data.

STANDARD DEVIATION
  • The standard deviation is a statistic that measures the dispersion of a data set relative to its mean and is calculated as the square root of the variance. It is calculated as the square root of variance by determining the variation between each data point relative to the mean. If the data points are further from the mean, there is a higher deviation within the data set; thus, the more spread out the data, the higher the standard deviation.
  • In the financial services industry, the standard deviation is one of the key fundamental risk measures that analysts, portfolio managers, wealth-management advisors and financial planners use. Investment firms report the standard deviation of their mutual funds and other products. A large dispersion shows how much the return on the fund is deviating from the expected normal returns. Because it is easy to understand, this statistic is regularly reported to the end clients and investors.
  • The formula for standard deviation uses three variables. The first variable is to be the value of each point within the data set, traditionally listed as x, with a sub-number denoting each additional variable (x, x1, x2, x3, etc.). The mean, or average, of the data points, is applied to the value of the variable M, and the number of data points involved is assigned to the variable n.

VOLUME INDICATORS

CHAIKIN OSCILLATOR
  • Named after its creator, Marc Chaikin, the Chaikin oscillator is an oscillator that measures the accumulation/distribution line of the moving average convergence divergence (MACD). The Chaikin Oscillator is calculated by subtracting a 10-day exponential moving average (EMA) of the accumulation/distribution line from a three-day EMA of the accumulation/distribution line and highlights the momentum implied by the accumulation/distribution line.
  • Fundamental analysts study business performance to glean information about the future direction of stock prices. Fundamental analysts believe that the ability to predict the market is about being the most informed. Technical analysts believe that all known information is already priced into the market and that patterns in the movement of stock prices can help to predict the future. Technical analysts use the Chaikin oscillator to find directional trends in momentum.
  • It is the balance of this relationship that drives markets. Analysts measure this relationship, the balance of buyers (accumulators), and sellers (distributors) with myriad indicators, including accumulation/distribution indicators such as the Chaikin Oscillator.

19  Other / Beginners & Help / [Discussion] One Miner Two Forks on: July 11, 2018, 07:11:49 AM
First of all let me start with one sentence, one sentence (badum tsssss....) did you get it? start with one sentence so I start with it?......
Okay so this is just a quick summary on what is Soft Fork and What is Hard Fork? I hope you like it

[1] WHAT IS FORKS
  • The blockchain – the technology underlying Bitcoin – is a distributed ledger made up of “blocks” of data that is continuously growing, forming a single chain of blocks (hence block-chain). Since Bitcoin is a decentralized network, participants in the network need to agree on a common set of rules to validate the transactions, in order to achieve consensus. This, therefore, results in a single chain of verified data that everyone agrees is correct, or a single truth.
  • A byproduct of distributed consensus, forks happen anytime two miners find a block at nearly the same time. The ambiguity is resolved when subsequent blocks are added to one, making it the longest chain, while the other block gets "orphaned" (or abandoned) by the network.
  • Forking implies any divergence in Blockchain- temporary or permanent. Very simply, forking is said to happen when a Blockchain splits into two branches. It can happen as a result of a change in the consensus algorithm or other software changes. Depending on the nature of change, the fork can be categorized into Hard Fork and Soft Fork.

[2] CAUSES

A Split in Consensus
As Bitcoin is a distributed and decentralized network, a fork occurs when miners discover a block at the same time, resulting in two split chains. However, this is a temporary fork as the chain that finds the next block first becomes the longest chain and automatically becomes the truth. Therefore, the shorter chain will be abandoned by the network.

A Change in the Underlying Rules of the Protocol
This represents a conscious change of the underlying codes by developers, and are permanent. The reason for changing the codebase can be due to:
  • Adding new features to enhance the network’s functionalities
  • Changing a core rule (such as increasing the block size)
Since the forks occurring in the first category (Split in Consensus) is temporary, the scope of focus (when someone talks about forks) should be in the second category, which is “A Change in the Underlying Rules of the Protocol”. The forks within this category are permanent and require participants within the network to upgrade their Bitcoin software, so as to integrate the new changes into their current software.[/i]

[3] SOFT FORK AND HARD FORK

SOFT FORK
  • A soft fork is a change to the bitcoin protocol that restricts the ruleset enforced by full nodes that upgrade to enforce the soft fork rules. A block that is considered valid before the soft fork activates will be considered invalid by upgraded full nodes if it violates the new soft fork rules after the soft fork activates.
  • An example is a soft fork that restricts the block size limit from 1MB to 500kB. Even though a 1MB block was previously considered valid, full nodes that upgrade to support this soft fork will reject any blocks larger than 500kB after the soft fork activates.
  • New transaction types can often be added as soft forks, requiring only that the participants for e.g. sender and receiver and miners understand the new transaction type. This is done by having the new transaction appear to older clients as a "pay-to-anybody" transaction (of a special form) and getting the miners to agree to reject blocks including this transaction unless the transaction validates under the new rules. This is how to pay to script hash (P2SH) was added to Bitcoin.

HARD FORK
  • A hard fork is a change to the bitcoin protocol that loosens the ruleset enforced by full nodes that upgrade to enforce the hard fork rules. A block that is considered invalid before the hard fork activates will be considered valid by upgraded full nodes if it follows the new hard fork rules after the hard fork has activated.
  • An example is a hard fork that increases the block size limit from 1MB to 2MB. Even though a 2MB block was previously considered invalid, full nodes that upgrade to support this hard fork will accept any blocks up to 2MB in size after the hard fork has activated.
  • A hard fork is a radical change to the protocol that makes previously valid blocks or transactions invalid. Any transaction on the forked (newer) chain will not be valid on the older chain. All nodes and miners will have to upgrade to the latest version of the protocol software if they wish to be on the new forked chain. This essentially creates a fork in the Blockchain, one path which follows the new, upgraded Blockchain, and one path which continues along the old path.

[4] DIFFERENCE
Hard fork is a consensus rule change that every node/miner must agree to enforce. If I don't update to use the new consensus rules, then any new blocks generated would be rejected by my node.
Soft fork is a consensus rule change implemented in such a way that older nodes will not 'see' the new rule and will continue to process as normal when new blocks are generated (albeit with lessened security since it can't validate the new rule changes itself).

And they live happily ever after

20  Other / Beginners & Help / SegWit: Segregated Witness on: July 09, 2018, 04:15:15 AM
    SEGREGATED WITNESS

    [1] What is SegWit
    • The idea for SegWit was first introduced by Pieter Wuille at a Bitcoin conference in 2015. Wuille is a Bitcoin developer and the co-founder of Blockstream, a software company which specializes in digital security for financial services.
    • Wuille suggested SegWit as a solution to a flaw in the Bitcoin protocol. In software development, solutions to flaws are called patches. The problem he wanted to fix is called transaction malleability. Transaction malleability is a nerdy way of saying that Bitcoin can be stolen from users by changing tiny pieces of transaction information.
    • Wuille’s SegWit proposal caused a big debate in the Bitcoin community and it was nearly two years before it went live. It was finally activated on August 23, 2017. The same patch was applied to the Litecoin protocol on May 10, 2017.
    • Segregated Witness (abbreviated as SegWit) is an implemented protocol upgrade intended to provide protection from transaction malleability and increase block capacity. SegWit defines a new structure called a witness that is committed to blocks separately from the transaction Merkle tree. This structure contains data required to check transaction validity but is not required to determine transaction effects. In particular, signatures and redeem scripts are moved into this new structure, which does not count towards the traditional 1 MB block size limit. Instead, a new weight parameter is defined, and blocks are allowed to have at most 4 million weight units (WU). A byte in the original 1 MB zone of the block weighs 4 WU, but a byte in a witness structure only weighs 1 WU, allowing blocks that are technically larger than 1 MB without a hardforking change.
    • Segwit is a scaling solution meant to solve Bitcoin’s blockchain size limitations by allowing more transactions to be added in each block thereby increasing Bitcoin transaction speeds. The trick involves splitting a transaction into two segments, moving the unlocking signature (“witness” data) from the original segment to a “witness” segment
    • Segwit is not a permanent solution to Bitcoin's scaling problem, but in theory, it would double the current capacity. If the network continues to grow then the same congestion issues will eventually be encountered again.

    The Problems
    • The signature is bulky and takes up to 65% of space and there is only limited space available in the block this, filled up the block rather quickly with information which is not that useful in the long term
    • the signature date is vulnerable to manipulation which may cause transaction malleabilty
    • Transaction Malleability
-Another property of SegWit is "transaction malleability". Even though every transaction is cryptographically signed, the signature doesn't encompass all transaction data. Many people consider this a flaw because a user can potentially change a transaction ID. This could lead to extra bitcoin being sent if a user claims they never received the bitcoin and the sender checks the original transaction ID to verify (which would not exist on the blockchain if the ID was changed).
The reasons malleability was introduced are because it enables signatures to be added after the transaction is created (which is necessary for Lightning Network), and because it reduces the transaction size by 65%
    • Scalability
-A new block is added to the chain at random intervals averaging, by design, ten minutes (proof-of-work causes this delay). Together with the limit on block-size, this limits the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time. Some sites work around this problem using "off-chain payments", conducting transactions without waiting for confirmation by the bitcoin network. Others have proposed changes to bitcoin that would reform the blockchain format in a backwards-incompatible way. For example, FlexTrans (Flexible Transactions) would make transactions smaller by changing how they are described as a "tag" system, allowing more transactions per block. This is not compatible with systems that do not upgrade.
    [/list]

    The Solution
    • SegWit proposes significant backward compatibility. It hides its increased block size by changing the definition of a block to be measured as one million "units" instead of bytes. The signature data called the witness would be separated from the Merkle tree record of who is sending or receiving the bitcoins. The witness data is moved to the end, and each byte of it would only count as one-quarter of a "unit". The overall effect would be changing the average block size to about 1.8 MB instead of This means the existing Bitcoin protocol doesn't change, allowing it to work without as much upgrading of software
It also addresses signature malleability, by moving signatures out of the transaction data, making them impossible to change. The transaction ID is no longer malleable. This makes Bitcoin safer to use with Lightning Network, a way to speed up small payments by bundling them and only writing to the blockchain at the beginning and end of their execution, which would be (slightly) risky while the malleability problem still exists.

    The Benefits
    • Weighting data based on how it affects node performance
    • Signature covers value
    • Linear scaling of sighash operations
    • Increased security for multisig
    • More efficient almost-full-node security
    • Script versioning

    The Pros And Cons
             PROS
    • Increases the number of transactions that a block can take.
    • Decreases transaction fees.
    • Reduces the size of each individual transaction.
    • Transactions can now be confirmed faster because the waiting time will decrease.
    • Helps in the scalability of bitcoin.
    • Since the number of transactions in each block will increase, it may increase the total overall fees that a miner may collect
    • Removes transaction malleability.
    • Aids in the activation of the lightning protocol.

             CONS
    • Miners will now get lesser transaction fees for each individual transaction.
    • The implementation is complex and all the wallets will need to implement segwit themselves. There is a big chance that they may not get it right the first time.
    • It will significantly increase the usage of resources since the capacity, transactions, bandwidth everything will increase.
    • As the creation of Bitcoin Cash shows, it did ultimately split up the Bitcoin Core community.
    • Another problem with Segwit is the maintenance. The sidechain containing the signature data will need to be maintained by miners as well. However, unlike the main blockchain, the miners have no financial benefits on doing so, it will need to be done pro-bono or some reward scheme needs to be thought of to incentivize the miners.
