Wink

Miners could be liars. They’ve proven that in the past when they have signaled falsely. So you get all types of Machiavellian games. But it does appear that we’ve gotten consensus.

People are starting to signal they are going for SegWit and people are relying on that. It’s really not in the miners’ best interest to disrupt this process any more than they already have. They stand to lose the most amount of money because they’re the only ones who have to actively choose which fork to follow, and that has the economic consequences.

Everybody else can just sit and hold and see how it plays out but doesn’t have to make an economic choice.

Simple article to introduce the Network Bitcoin Evolution to others parties.

Interesting development : http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-07-31/patrick-byrne-why-cryptocurrencies-matter

Quote
So, on December 19th, 2013, a journalist interviewed me. Near the end of the interview, she asked, “Are you ever going to accept Bitcoin?” And, at the time I thought in maybe a year and a half I’d get around to doing it, so I said, “Yeah, I hope someday that we'll do that.” She put that in her article, and I started getting Google alerts from newspapers in Thailand, in South Korea, in Africa. I mean, that little mention got picked up all over the world. And I realized, Geez, there’s a subculture around the world who is waiting for this.

So on January 1st, 2014, we started working on it. We put 40 guys in a room, sliding pizzas under the door so they could work day and night. And, by January 9th, we got Bitcoin up. As soon as we announced it, it became global news. At that point I realized that the world was ready for this earlier than I had expected it to be.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are a form of money that's a stable field that the government can’t destroy and can’t distort.
Because its creation is governed by the laws of mathematics.

It can’t happen any faster or slower than a certain rate, and it all sort of self-adjusts. What that means is -- unlike Janet Yellen, who can sign something and whisk 85 billion new U.S. dollars into existence -- there’s nothing she can sign that will whisk new Bitcoin into existence.

So, cryptocurrencies in general give us a stable medium through which we can communicate our information about values and prices in a way that no government mandarin can distort or usurp.

As some coins were deposited back to MtGox, we could identify which accounts were used to receive them; two in particular were of interest, and were possible to link to the online identity "WME". (Clusters who directly used these MtGox accounts are highlighted in red.) WME has been active since a long time back, often advertising "cheap coins" on the BitcoinTalk forums and wanting to trade exchange money codes. BTC-e publicly vouched for him, saying that "[we] know WME very well".

WME was involved with an incident involving stolen Bitcoinica funds (visible in the graph above), which provided yet another strong indicator that we had identified the right man, seemingly the main money launderer behind the MtGox heist. This incident also ended up revealing the name "Alexander Vinnik", though we didn't at the time think it was his real name, having seen many aliases. Today's arrest suggests it was real after all

To be clear, this investigation turned up evidence to identify Vinnik not as a hacker/thief but as a money launderer; his arrest news also suggests this is what he is being suspected for. He may have merely bought cheap coins from thieves and offered a laundering service. He is, however, a crucial piece of the puzzle, as he will have likely known who he was dealing with and laundering for, and so represents a major breakthrough in the case. We assume that law enforcement will now be taking the appropriate next steps to pursue all the remaining angles and hopefully identify the other individuals involved as well.

On The Rise Of Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies and The Fall Of Dollar Hegemony

Moving on, Townsend took the conversation in a direction that he said might be outside of Malmgren’s comfort zone: The rise of cryptocurrency’s like bitcoin.

Contrary to his expectations, Malmgren said she’s been closely following the increasing use of cryptocurrencies, adding that they will likely play a role in determining who dominates the global economy, and therefore determines the monetary framework, after precipitating the next big paradigm shift, which will lead the world away from the dollar-based framework that exists today.

Governments like China and Russia, which are seeking to create their own digital currencies, pose a greater threat to the long-term dominance of the dollar than they, or the US, realize.

Explication : https://medium.com/@SDWouters/why-schnorr-signatures-will-help-solve-2-of-bitcoins-biggest-problems-today-9b7718e7861c

Quote
All this signature data increases the transaction size, and thus the transaction fee that is paid to the miners with it. You are claiming space that could be used for other transactions, which means you must pay to take their place.

At the end of the day, if it is just one person sending that transaction from multiple sources, there should be some way to do so with just one signature, right? This is what Schnorr signatures allow us to do.
One transaction has one signature

Estimates are that this upgrade would reduce the use of storage and bandwidth by at least 25%. To point out the obvious: that is a huge efficiency gain.

2ème problème ciblé : le SPAM de la MEMpool.

Quote
To push people into increasing the blocksize, the attackers made it expensive to send bitcoin transactions for weeks in a row, by using up as much transaction space as possible through all kinds of constructions.

One of their methods was to include dozens of signatures in transactions by constantly sending transactions from many sources.

[...]

Fortunately for us, Schnorr signatures would help combat this kind of spam attack.

If we only have one signature per transaction, more transactions will fit into blocks and a spammer would need to send far more transactions in competition with more people, and thus likely spend more money to take up the same transaction space. Signatures are often the largest individual part of a transaction, so the attacker would be disadvantaged.

Mining pool operators, and in particular, Jihan Wu and Micree Zhan agreed they would signal SegWit using BIP9 upon the release of the production-ready code which occurred later in the fall, after the third Scaling Bitcoin conference. However, soon after this meeting, Bitmain ceased responding to all my attempts at communication and instead began supporting a fork of the Bitcoin Core codebase that deliberately breaks with consensus rules.

Not being someone to give up so easily, I continued to attempt reestablishing communications. Finally, months later through the help of someone who had contacts in Bitmain, I was able to get in touch with Jihan Wu and arrange for a meeting with all the top mining pools which took place in Beijing in March. In my opening remarks I explicitly stated that I was not there to try to force any decisions on them — that it was entirely in their right to run whatever software they wanted, whether Bitcoin Core or something else. I was there to listen to their concerns and see if we might be able to find some common ground. I also made clear that nothing was to be signed. Any proposals would have to go through public scrutiny and review before any commitments could be made by anyone.

At first I was very optimistic that we had made good progress. And indeed, with a few of the miners present I did forge good bonds and made some great new friends. But almost immediately upon leaving, Jihan Wu reverted to his taunting tweets and bullying tactics. It was as if *nothing* had gotten through to him…he was only interested in playing his game.

This is the first of a series of BIPs describing my “spoonnet” experimental hardfork. Recently many bitcoin businesses expressed their requirements for supporting a hardfork proposal. While it is proven to be extremely difficult to obtain community-wide consensus, spoonnet fulfills all the commonly requested features, including deterministic activation logic, strong and simple 2-way replay protection, wipe-out protection, and predictable resources use. A few more BIPs are coming to describe these features.

The activation is purely based on flag day. Since it is very difficult to measure community consensus on-chain, this may only be done off-chain, and everyone switch to the new software when the vast majority agree. This is more a social issue than a technical one.

Bitcoin will someday be in a bubble, but that time is far away, Martin noted.

One benefit of cryptocurrencies is that they coexist with other forms of money used for transactions. Bitcoin is not in a bubble. Instead, people are using it to park their dollars so central banks cannot destroy their value.

Volatility will continue for bitcoin, as nothing moves in a straight line. Martin believes cryptocurrencies will trade along with sovereign currencies and eventually replace them.

He will not be convinced that the growth of bitcoin’s price has stalled until its market cap rivals that of the United States’ money supply, which is $13.5 trillion.

What makes this interesting to us is the fact that one of the reasons why bitcoin functions as a secondary medium of exchange is precisely the fact that it is considered “liquid”, i.e., that it can be exchanged for fiat currencies at any time at a reasonably small bid/ask spread.

We currently don’t believe that all bitcoin exchanges will be cut off from the fiat money system, but some sort of concerted attempt at suppression of these exchanges is clearly underway.

now, they fight ...

Quote
It may well be that Wells Fargo and other banks are merely concerned about potential regulatory issues if they continue to work with bitcoin exchanges – but why now all of a sudden and not before?

In any case, the issue is important in connection with the potential for bitcoin and other crypto currencies to become genuine media of exchange, i.e., money that is accepted widely for the final payment for other goods and services in the economy without reservations.
