[BOUNTY] Preserve coronavirus info on the permaweb and receive rewards! [CLOSED]

Reward: $5,000 USD every two weeks, plus $500 USD in special prizes, given in AR.

Updated 29th April 2020:

As of today, April 29th, the DPL<>Arweave web archiving campaign is closed, and will not be accepting new submissions. Thank you all for your hard work in contributing to this important dataset, and for adding such important information to the permaweb.

Pending payments for previous rounds will of course still be paid out - if you have questions about this please email us at team@arweave.org, or DM me (@arweave-india) on Discord.

Please read the rules for this campaign very carefully, as they have changed since the previous archiving campaign.

Arweave and the Decentralised Public Library are on a joint mission to permanently preserve history, and we need your help. Our goal is to archive vital historical and cultural information on a blockchain - far beyond the reach of censorship, deletion, or alteration.

Arweave is a blockchain-based permanent storage network, and is the backbone of the permaweb. The permaweb provides truly uncensorable preservation of web content. Together with you, our community, we will be harnessing the power of the permaweb to build a truly permanent archive of human history, knowledge, and experience.

You will be paid to archive historical content, current events, international affairs, and all things history in-the-making.

We believe that crowd-sourcing knowledge collation and exchange is the most effective way forward in creating a diverse, representative and permanent archive of human history.

Here at the Decentralised Public Library, we’re a small team striving hard towards an ambitious goal. Crowdsourcing our knowledge curation efforts helps us get much more important information archived than we would be able to without the help of our rapidly-growing archival community.

While helping us achieve our archival goals, we also have the wonderful opportunity to grow a community around archiving history together! To facilitate the growth of this community, we encourage you to join the Decentralised Public Library Discord server, so we can all chat together about the pieces of history we are passionate about.

So, we are now launching an ongoing archiving campaign open to all!

The task: Use the Arweave web extension to archive web content relating to the coronavirus, including webpages and PDFs, that are likely to be important to historians and other researchers examining this outbreak in the future.

If you’re not sure what to archive, check the FAQs at the bottom of this post.

The Instructions:

  • Please read all of the rules to ensure you can receive a reward!
  • Install the free Arweave web extension here on Chrome or Brave, or here on Firefox, which is a combined token wallet and a web page archiving tool. Learn how to archive web pages with this handy user guide.
  • Claim a free Arweave wallet from https://www.arweave.org/wallet with a token to get started!
  • Fill in this Google form to register for the campaign. If you have already filled out this form before, you don’t need to do it again.
  • Join our Discord server to chat with us and the community, to be the first to receive all updates, get tokens for archiving, and to ask any questions you have!
  • Hunt down unique web pages relating to coronavirus (see the FAQs for more details), and archive them!
  • To avoid archiving duplicate pages, you should use this tool to check whether a page you want to archive has been archived previously.
  • Every day, you must report the archives you wish to be rewarded for in this Google form. The forms allow for reporting up to 50 transactions in one report, so if you wish to report more than 50 in one day you should submit another form with the extra transaction IDs - there is no daily limit to how many archives you are allowed to report! You don’t have to submit 50 per day - you can submit fewer if you want. You can also nominate one archive per day each to be considered for the Editor’s Pick prize.
  • Do not submit the same transaction ID multiple times. This includes any transaction IDs that you nominate for special prizes.
  • Once per day, you must submit one report to this thread containing all archived web pages or PDFs you wish to report that day. See the template report below as an example of a correctly formatted report. Remember, if you are in doubt about what you can & can’t archive, check the FAQs below, and send me a DM on our Discord server to arweave-india.
  • In your daily reports, you can nominate one of your transaction IDs per day to win this payout period’s Editor’s Pick prize. We will consider your nominated transaction IDs for this prize, alongside others’ nominations! You must also nominate your transaction ID in the Google reporting form.
  • If you run out of tokens, DM arweave-india on our Discord server to request a top up.
  • After a round closes, we calculate your rewards and any prizes you have won, and send them to your Arweave rewards wallet address.

Example template report format:

Code:
Bitcointalk username: Arweave.org
Report number: 1/2/3/4/5/etc…
Archiving period: 1/2/3/4/5/etc…
Date of report: 5th February 2020

My archived pages/PDFs (for general topic):

  • For archiving period/round 3 (beginning 15th April 2020) there will be a reward pool of $5,000 USD (equivalent) available to community archivers for the round.
  • As a participant, you will receive a percentage of the total reward pool, based on how many points you earn throughout the round, as a percentage of how many points were earned overall by community archivers in that round. For example, if you earn 10% of all the points earned in round 3, then you will receive 10% of the reward pool of $5,000 USD!
  • Round 3: for every 1 valid archive submitted, you earn 1 point.
  • Rewards and contest special prizes will be calculated per round, and distributed on the payout date specified in the graphic above. All payments will be made in AR to your rewards Arweave wallet.
  • Make sure to keep your Arweave wallet keyfile secure and backed-up, we will distribute your rewards to your rewards wallet! Lost, deleted, or stolen wallets cannot be recovered or frozen.
  • The USD-> AR peg will be set as the average price across the three exchanges AR is currently listed on, over the days prior to the payout time.

Referral rewards

You can earn rewards by referring fellow passionate archivers to the campaign! If you invite a friend and they successfully receive archiving rewards, you get extra rewards too - an extra $0.10 USD (in AR) per valid archived page they submit in their first payout period. Make sure they report your wallet address when they sign up to the campaign, as per the rules section.

Contests & Prizes:
In addition to the per-page archiving rewards, there are also special prizes on offer each payout period. There are two prizes to win in round 3:

  • The Editor’s Pick! Every payout period the core Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will pick their favourite archive from nominated submissions, and the archiver will receive an additional $250 USD (in AR) on top of their other rewards. This archive might be the most historically important, the most interesting, or the most creative submission! Please note that the winning archive will be chosen only from those you nominate to be considered for the prize.
  • Best Archiver! Every payout period the Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will select a winner for the prize of best overall archiver from everyone who submits content. This person will receive an additional $250 USD (in AR) on top of their other rewards. This person’s archives throughout the payout period have been of consistently high quality, interesting, and from varied sources.

For archiving:

1.Don’t archive copyright-infringing content. Focus on 'primary source' and ‘original source’ content (government reports, etc).[/b] To be sure of a website’s copyright and duplication or archiving policy, check their terms & conditions - usually you can find a link to this in the footer of their web page. If you are in doubt about the copyright status of a page, you can check with by direct messaging the team on the Decentralised Public Library Discord server. One tip is to look for: open data, open government data, creative commons-licensed content, and open access content.
2. Do not use the web extension to archive paywalled content, or otherwise break any website’s terms of use.
3. Don’t archive people’s personal data, such as Facebook or LinkedIn profiles.
4. You must use the wallet address you claimed from https://www.arweave.org/wallet to archive your web pages, otherwise we will not be able to reward you (this is to help avoid duplicate participation). If you have a problem with this, please contact me (@arweave-india) on our Discord server. You must only use one Arweave wallet for the campaign.
5. You must complete the required Google form before you begin to be eligible for campaign rewards.
6. You must report your transactions in both the daily report Google form (you can select general topic or any of the special topics from a down down menu), and also in the Bitcointalk.org thread to be eligible for rewards.
7. You must be respectful to your fellow community members and campaign administrators.
8. You must archive the web pages yourself. The use of multiple accounts is not permitted and may result in a ban.
9. We reserve the right to disqualify any participant deemed to be acting in bad faith, acting against the spirit of the campaign, or those repeatedly breaking rules.
10. We reserve the right to alter the campaign rules, and will update this post if changes occur.
11. Do not archive duplicate content. You can check for duplicates using this tool. Duplicate archives will not receive rewards. Do not submit duplicate transaction IDs. If you nominate a transaction for a prize in the Google form, do not enter that ID again - no duplicates are required.
12. Please do not archive pages where all or most of the content is contained in a video, as the video file will not be archived and therefore the page is of limited value to future historians.
13. Your report numbers should re-start at 1 when each new archiving period begins. For example, if new archiving period begins at 12:01 noon CET, your report on Wednesday afternoon should be labelled as ‘report 1’ even if you have participated in previous archiving periods or rounds. This helps us a lot with making sure we get the correct rewards to you per archiving period.
14. Do not use services such as 'printfriendly' (that creates a PDF/print preview of a webpage) to archive content. Only archive the original page.
15. Do not send AR out of your archiving wallet in a financial transaction.
16. Your Bitcointalk account must be over 1 month old, and must be a Junior Member rank or higher when you begin archiving (no Newbie accounts are allowed).
17. Archives from Twitter are not permitted, and will not be rewarded.

For referring:
If you refer a friend and want to receive rewards for this, they must include your Arweave wallet address in their Google form submission when they register to participate. So, make sure you encourage them to submit your address when they sign up! Here is the link for you to share the registration form with a friend: https://forms.gle/UPV1x7YQ2Uip3GgFA.

We’ll add to this list of FAQs as the campaign progresses, so feel free to ask any and all questions in this thread!

How can I trade AR? Which exchanges is the AR token listed on?

AR is listed on three exchanges currently, A1 exchange, Bilaxy, and BiHODL. The core team is working on further integrations. Please take care while trading, and do not store or deposit tokens in exchanges that you do not trust.

What type of content should I archive?

We recommend you archive primary sources (AKA original sources) only, and all must be related to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. For example: government statements or reports; parliamentary debates or proceedings; official original source press/media statements from individuals, governments, or companies; primary source proof of breaking news events; open access scientific proceedings or other open access publications about current events, etc.

If you read a news article about something you find interesting, don’t archive the article itself, find the original source documents, perspectives, or statements the article is based on.

If you are in doubt about what you can and can’t archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and I’ll be happy to help.

What type of content shouldn’t I archive?

It is important that you do not archive copyrighted content, and that you only archive primary/original sources. For example, we recommend that you do not archive newspaper articles or most news websites, because their content is often both copyrighted and also a secondary source (read about what a secondary source is here). Content such as a Wikipedia page on ‘History’ as an abstract concept is not sufficient to receive a reward.

It is important to only archive high quality content that meets the rules. We will be checking transactions, and if you have made an archiving transaction that breaks the rules, you will not be eligible for rewards or prizes.

If you are in doubt about what you can and can’t archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and I’ll be happy to help.

How do I avoid archiving duplicate content?

You can use this new tool to check a specific page’s URL against the current archives on the permaweb. If the page has already been archived, the tool will tell you. If a page has previously been archived, you will not receive rewards for archiving this page.

How can I check copyright on a web page?

It’s your responsibility to check the copyright on a web page. If, during our checks, you are found to have archived copyrighted content, we will not be able to give you any rewards or prizes, so be careful!

You should check the ‘terms and conditions’ or ‘terms of use’ page of a website if you are unsure (you can usually find this in the footer of a webpage), it will detail what the site's copyright/intellectual property policies are. Often, websites that are sharing- and archiving-friendly will use a creative commons licence of some kind on their terms page, which usually means you can archive it without breaking copyright. Also, content released under open government licences, and open access licences are typically safe to archive.

Like I mentioned above, if you are in doubt, shoot me a DM (arweave-india) on our Discord server!

Can I archive pages in any language, or from any country?

Yes! Content does not have to be English-language. As with all archives or collections of human history, it's important to have a wide range of societies, people, and countries represented.

Help, I’ve run out of tokens!

Simply join our Discord server and drop me a direct message (my username is arweave-india) and we’ll be happy to top up your wallet
