3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / ** should we BAN COME-FROM-ABOVE? on: June 24, 2014, 05:48:54 PM
as most of u know theres a guy lurking on the forums called Come-from-Above whos so fixated on certain posters on the forums he goes from topic to topic stalking posters and spamming topics with his newbie drama and tepid flames.  99% entirely wrong crap talk, propaganda, fud, lies and harassment.

The guy has been here just over 2 months, and he thinks he runs the place suggesting we make up fabricate a reason to ban people.  he doesn't have the history, gravitas, nor the charisma to really make any of this happen, but even a small dog gets annoying when it barks constantly.

So its mildly irritating to read his crap posts, but easy enough to ignore if we tried. Roll Eyes lets have a democratic vote- should this thing be removed from the forums?

some critical acclaim over ~CfA~'s recent post spree:

He just went on a NEM spamming rampage himself, making multiple threads, posting nonstop in some weird split personality type of style. It's like the pot asking the kettle to get banned.

6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / altcoin mining drought is here! on: March 07, 2014, 06:37:40 AM
bitcoin sneezes and shitcoins are catching the flu.

http://poolpicker.eu/text.php
http://poolpicker.eu/

profitability is down on most coins, and the same equipment is making less money they were a couple of weeks ago.  maybe computing resources are spread too thin between shitcoins, or maybe people are pulling out of shitcoins and buying up the cheap bitcoins.  whatever the reason, overpriced video cards and prospective miners looking at 200+ days to break-even are the threads i've been reading this week.  I'm figuring this is a good time to discuss the drought in mining, how long you think it will last, and what the fuck miners are planning to do.
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How not to launch a shitcoin on: January 28, 2014, 10:35:42 AM
A few of us are getting rich by initial mining new launches of altcoins, and many more are getting screwed by shitty launches.  If you've been here for a week, you know what i'm talking about.

This thread is to commiserate and rofl at the most shambolic new altcoins.  This thread will hopefully help future developers avoid pitfalls.  Please post your own horror stories!

I'll start:  Rosecoin

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=424241.0

A quick scan through the thread shows the main developer of Rosecoin screaming in 20pt bold:

Quote from: Rosecoin
Sorry everyone. Seems coins are going to one person.
Your mined coins will be invalid! Will relanch later.

while this alone is confidence inspiring, the developer 'Rosecoin' has a twin 'Rosecoincn' also posting in step, as if they're sharing the same brain.  i guess the 'cn' suffix implies they're going to spread this to a billion Chinese or something.

Coin has a 30 minute retarget time in 2014.  no source, incomplete wallet, and despite no premine there is somehow a (now closed) giveaway thread. 1.4% of 21 billion coins are initial mined before the wallets are released or the pool starts functioning.  because thread is an unholy fusion of prelaunch, launch, pool, and giveaway, the thread is now locked and rosecoin will hopefully fade from memory like a lingering fart.

What other coins are an example of what not to do?
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / CatCoin Forking 3rd time - Block 20999 on: January 11, 2014, 11:57:08 PM
Note:  I am not Dev.

disclaimer:  I own some catcoin.  CAT:BTC @ .00030260 (cryptsy)

CatCoin's third Fork is live right now:  pools with 0% fee are available for early fork miners!

New Catbox (testing) catcoin release

https://bitbucket.org/dahozer/catcoin
https://bitbucket.org/dahozer/catcoin/downloads/catcoin-0.8.8.tar.gz

Caturday, Jan 11: Silly_Sheeple release:

difficulty adjustment every block, based on last 36 block.
Increase COINBASE_MATURITY.
Play with the coinhoppers before eating them

------------

This is my catbox release of Catcoin, that has been relicensed under the AGPLv3, and includes p2pool (tested) as well as counterpartd(not tested) in the same build tree.

this version DOES A HARDFORK at block 20999 to adjust the difficulty every block, based on the last 36 block average. While this will not fix all the issues with coinhoppers, it's very much like a cat playing with an insect (in our case, a coinhopper) before eating it.

And since Cats are not herd animals, I'm going my own damn way and releasing, and it will either be a good test with the hash I bring, or some of you cats might decide to come along and join the p2pool(s) (kittyco.in/p2pool) in search of tasty coinhoppers.

Expect another release and hardfork next Caturday. Cats are agile animals, and this is Agile cryptocoin development. If you want a tested coin, go back to bitcoin, or finance my fiat expenses so I can test this properly on the -testnet.

Could you please clarify your release plans at a newb level?  Are you planning your own personal fork in the 'real world' or are you still testing this?

Additionally - anyone have any idea who keeps killing our difficulty transitions?  This is the first coin I've watched and without a real clue it certainly looks like we're routinely under attack.

I've tested it as much as I really can without a working -testnet.

It's live, see http://kittyco.in/p2pool , and it's up to you all to vote with your hashes on which side of the fork at block 20999 you want.

And yes, I suppose you could say 'under attack', but it's really just a product of rational profit-seeking behavior, which is an easily programmable fix. The first step is get everyone used to hardforks every Caturday until we get more user-friendly behavior.

9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / cost benefit - sell cards or mine? on: January 04, 2014, 12:07:38 PM
So i was at the computer store today, and it turns out the R9 280x have been trickling through on backorders.  people are going out the door and selling them on craigslist.  cost of cards are about $300, and i've seen prices up to $500 for brand-new-in-box cards.

Currently, demand for 7950s are so high right now i see them listed for $300-450 for used, fucking cards.

People are putting cash into vapourware ASICs.  the design and fab are possible, but all of the companies are as dodgy looking as fuck.

so, is it better to mine now?  to sell pickaxes and shovels?  risk it all on a manufacturer in an extradition-free country?

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / CryptoMiner 'appreciation' thread - got a rig? get in here. on: January 04, 2014, 06:15:52 AM
after perusing the trainwreck of a catcoin thread after the currency's first pump-and-dump, i noticed a pattern begin to emerge in the comments, specifically negative comments about crypto miners and mining in general.

As a disclaimer, i'm a miner.  and i'm an investor.  and i am a speculator. Let me also say that the attitude of the catcoin community towards mining is mixed. i am only focusing on misunderstandings people have about miners and mining in general.

from what i have seen, for those who did not follow the catcoin drama (i don't blame you!), the coin was hyped, posted on cryptsy, the catcoin supporters manipulated the currency to open at 0.001btc, and people started mining like crazy.  when the pump-and-dump occurred (it is an altcoin, after all), miners left in droves when the price plummeted.  now, catcoin is about to be forked becuase people holding worthless catcoins can't stand to sell at a loss.  One of the interesting side-effects are the mixed attitudes towards mining and cryptominers in general.

as a sample,

"many miners/pools will take whatever price they can get whereas investors are not going to dump their coins."...

"Being the best coin for miners is not a benefit, it is a curse."...

The problem is the oscillation with the inherent temporary high hash power combined with dumping of the cheaply mined coins, at the expense of loyal miners...

Lowering the diff MAY get the pumpndump miners back, but nobody's committed to mining with or without the fork...

"Can you miners do me a favor and exit the pools until next week please, daddy wants a new yacht."...

"Multicoin Miners are not HOLDING onto them. Multicoin Miners want fiat. There is no POINT for twitchy miners to MINE a STUCK coin. They are NOT INVESTORS."...

Proportional allows pool hoppers to 'steal' from non-hopping miners and thus honest people get less...

etc..

i've noticed two things:

1. the majority of the community does value miners.

2. the worse catcoin valuation got, the more fingerpointing singled out miners.  specifically, miners that use auto-switching pools were singled out by a few vocal people as the main cause of the catcoin crash.

As a miner, I feel miners are being scapegoated for things that are not in their control.  However, are there miners that feel there are any ethical guidelines for mining?  are auto-switching pools unethical?

I'm just throwing this on the wall to see if it sticks.  If you are a miner, what are your moral obligations (if any) to a coin you've already mined?  Have you experienced this type of attitude towards your mining? If you are not a miner, what role do you see miners play in the currency trade?  If you are speculator, do you believe you are 'wrecking' a coin if you are after nothing but profit?  and if you straddle multiple categories, where does the balance lie?

11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [ATTN] Want to Make Your Own Coin? Want to Implode All Altcoins? on: January 03, 2014, 05:19:20 AM
NOTE: I Am not Dev, DEVELOPER THREAD HERE https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=396991.0

You guys pissed off because you don't get in on the ground floor?

Want to pump and dump your own altcoin, but you don't know fuck all about coding?

Are you excited about catcoin, but don't agree with forking the coin?

Do you see an overcrowded market of Altcoins, and still think, "ME TOO!"?
