Monocle is brought to you by the Vertcoin (VTC) developers.Stealth addresses are now on MON mainnet - please download the updated wallet: http://www.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/298wpl/monocle_stealth_address_release_candidate_1/NOTE - UNTIL A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF NODES HAVE UPDATED, SX TRANSACTIONS MAY NOT BE RELAYED, SO DO NOT SEND LARGE AMOUNTS OF MON IN STEALTH TRANSACTIONS YET, AS THOSE TRANSACTIONS MAY TAKE A LONG TIME TO MAKE IT INTO A BLOCK AS THE NETWORK UPDATES.
POOL AND P2POOL NODE OPERATORS SHOULD ALSO UPDATE TO THE NEW MON WALLET SO THEY CAN MINE SX TRANSACTIONS. SX INTRODUCTION IS NOT HARDFORKING, BUT SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH SINCE IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET AS MANY NODES AND MINERS UPDATED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. MINERS:Running your own node on the Vertcoin p2pool network is the optimal way to mine, with zero fees and the maximum possible payouts. To make the process easy and painless I have created a preconfigured p2pool node in a box, with simple howto and triple merge mining of VTC+MON+PLX: https://github.com/Paul-Bradley/EasyNodeGeneral p2pool info: http://www.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/22hved/vertcoin_p2pool_faq/ and http://www.reddit.com/r/vertcoin/comments/21r4y8/vertcoin_p2pool_quick_start_guide/To mine MON, you will need to use the existing VTC mining software you use now, but you will need to mine on one of the p2pool nodes which adds MON merged mining (they will be added to this post over the next few days) and you will need to change your miner configuration to add your MON address once the wallet is released. You will use your VTC address as username and your MON address as password when connecting; eg. vertminer.exe -o "NODE-ADDRESS:9555" -u "VTC-ADDRESS" -p "MON-ADDRESS" --the-rest-of-your-settings If you already mine at a node that decides to add MON, you'll need to change the TCP port you connect to the node on, to the new port for both VTC and MON (9555 as specified in the example above), and add your MON address as password. Note that the optimal way to mine both VTC and MON (with no fees, and maximum payouts due to reduced latency) is to run your own p2pool node on your LAN, possibly even in a VM or on your own desktop computer. The main p2pool software is at https://github.com/donSchoe/p2pool-n - if you install and configure that for VTC, all you need to do to add MON at release is add the monocle daemon to the machine, and run p2pool with the --merged option, eg. python run_p2pool.py --net vertcoin -f 0 --give-author 0 --no-bugreport --merged http://MON-RPCUser:MON-RPCPassword@127.0.0.1:6888 - you'd then be mining VTC in the normal way (with payouts in the generation transaction, fully distributed on p2pool) and solomining MON into the Monocle wallet on the p2pool server. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to run this configuration. NODES: addnode=146.185.131.175 addnode=188.226.239.48 addnode=188.226.233.63 Forum: https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/1276-monocle-mon/

Following the release of Vertcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364 a number of people in the VTC community (myself included) have expressed concerns about the current difficulty adjustment, which is quite slow (3.5 days between adjustments). This feedback led us in Vertcoin_dev to discuss and test the Kimoto Gravity Well difficulty algorithm (abbreviated to KGW in this post), as used in Megacoin originally, which has now found it's way also into Anoncoin, Ron-Paul-Coin and others following issues they had with multipools stranding them at high difficulty. KGW retargets every block, smooths adjustments, and copes extremely well with variations in network hashrate, with block times remaining stable and quickly following changes in hashrate. Here is a graph of MEC hashrate vs. difficulty, where you can see how smoothly and consistently KGW tracks: We want to address any issues BEFORE we have a problem like that with VTC, so following private testing on the testnet, we have validated KGW for Vertcoin and intend to release an updated wallet and fork in the next couple of weeks. We expect to release the new wallet, which will also include updated N-factor scheduling (also in response to community feedback), sometime around Monday the 27th or Tuesday the 28th of January 2014. Please also see the N-factor scheduling poll at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=431092https://forum.megacoin.co.nz/index.php?topic=893.0 gives an excellent overview of KGW. Following the changes, everyone will need to change to the new wallet. We will contact pool operators to ensure a smooth changeover there, but we also need to allow time for users who may not come here so often to see the requirement for a new wallet and update, although, if they did not update, they could do so later without loss of funds or similar problems, it's just that their old wallet would not recognise new blocks after the changeover. We want to balance giving people time to see there has been a change, with the desire to fork quickly so as to better protect and strengthen the network. We'd like some feedback on how long after wallet release we should allow until the block height at which KGW takes effect. Please register your votes above.

We are re-examining the N-factor increase scheduling in VertcoinMain thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364Scrypt was utilized by Litecoin to try and deter ASIC use because large memory requirements are the best way to try and make ASIC financially unfeasible. Litecoin held out for a while, but the original memory requirements in the barebone litecoin distribution were just not high enough to lock out ASIC completely and we are now seeing the release of Scrypt ASICs such as the Gridseed GC3355. Vertcoin has now been released as the logical evolution of Litecoin and introduces what's known as "Adaptive N-Factor". The N-factor component of Scrypt determines how much memory is required to compute the hashing functions. Vertcoin N-factor increases with time to stay one step ahead of any possible ASIC development. Instead of using a fixed value of 10, such as Litecoin does, the Vertcoin N-factor begins at 11 and gradually increases over time using the following schedule (at original release): We intend to change this schedule, because user feedback has indicated it is felt too aggressive, so we will change to a schedule that increases N-factor somewhere between 18 and 24 months. Please vote for the interval you feel is best between N-factor increases. When we fork to a new N-factor schedule, we will also be changing to the Kimoto Gravity Well difficulty algorithm. Please see the other poll at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=431104 and contribute there.

Hi everyone,
Not much of a programmer, but interested in crypto for a long time (way prior to BTC). I just have some questions I'd be interested to know the answers to about pooled mining.
1. How are miners kept honest in regard to what shares they complete? Ie. if a pool hands out shares to a worker, and the worker reports those shares as done, how does the pool know they were really done? It would clearly be impractical to verify all the work, and if the pool tried to verify part of the work, as soon as the client knew which part would be checked it could just do that subset of the work. What stops a dishonest client from claiming to have done a share when it hasn't?
2. What stops a dishonest worker from hashing on a pool, taking it's share of payouts all the time it doesn't hit a block, but then when it does hit a block, simply announcing that block to the network and claimining it all for itself?

Vertcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364 is pretty rare and tough to mine, so I thought I'd give a bit away to anyone struggling to mine a decent amount. I'm going to give away a massive 250 VTC - for reference, a 7950 or similar will mine about ~125 VTC/day, so this giveaway should roughly triple your days mining if you're mining with that kind of hashpower. To compete, just mine Vertcoin this weekend at: http://vtc.kilovolt.co.uk and post your VTC address along with your pool username in this thread. At a random time on either Saturday or Sunday, I will review the list of active users on vtc.kilovolt.co.uk and pick one who will receive 250 VTC Go!

Vertcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364.0 uses a new (not scrypt, and not scrypt-jane) PoW, which results in about half your normal hashrate, and requires different cgminer settings and a modded cgminer. The modded algorithm is harder to mine than normal scrypt, and requires lowered thread concurrency and possibly lowered intensity, memclock and core clocks depending on your setup. The latest miners are always linked from http://www.vertcoin.orgI thought I'd start a thread to collect best configs and peoples hashrates with them. Here are mine: R9 290: "gpu-engine" : "1000", "gpu-memclock" : "1500", "gpu-powertune" : "20", "intensity" : "13", "temp-overheat" : "80", "temp-cutoff" : "85", "temp-hysteresis" : "3", "vectors" : "1", "worksize" : "512", "lookup-gap" : "2", "thread-concurrency" : "24550" These are getting me about 330KH/s per GPU when using the PC. When not using the PC for other stuff, I increase intensity to 20 and get 400KH/s per GPU. A 7970, 7950 and any other configs and hashrates achieved would be great.

Mined some Vertcoin today: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=404364 - thought I'd spread some around. First 50 people to post their address get 1 VTC. Might take me a few days to get back to this thread and do the payouts, so just leave your address.

Hello everyone, I'm pretty new here, just doing my first trade today, so starting a rep thread.
Anyone I trade with, I'd appreciate your feedback here. Thanks.

Hello everyone,
Just a little welcome thread. I've dabbled in mining before with my GPUs but recently took my first proper leap with a BFL ASIC which I've mined some BTC and am mining some altcoins with. I also just ordered a litecoin/scrypt rig.
Look forward to seeing you all on the forums.
