1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Investing in coins built on Ethereum or alt coins that are independent? on: June 01, 2021, 01:27:45 AM
Hey everyone, just wondering what your current investment strategies are in regards to alt coins?  I have been around for a while and have been here for numerous runs and pull backs...I haven't stayed too up to date on all the newest alt coins out there.  It is crazy how quickly I have felt like I have become a dinosaur when it comes to all the different coins and projects that are out there now.  I feel like Defi and a few other major developments have just blown by me.  Trying to get myself back up to speed on what projects/coins seem promising for the future.

Aside from the majors and older coins like BTC, BCH, ETH, LTC, XRP, DASH, Monero, etc...which ones are you all investing/believing in these days?

Are you guys leaning towards coins that have been built on top of Ethereum or ones that are completely separate?  Does that matter to you?

Just wondering where you all are putting your money these days...besides BTC on the dips of course...
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Claiming BCH from Beta Trezor Web Wallet on: August 19, 2017, 02:14:38 AM
Hi All,
From what I have read, the beta Trezor web wallet is now stable to claim BCH.  Have any of you tried it?  Are there any issues?   I have been waiting for it to be stable and to be able to update my firmware.  Updating to the latest firmware on the trezor was much more difficult that previous updates.

My question is:  are you able to export all of your BCH that is in your wallet in one transaction into the new BCH address in the beta trezor web wallet, or do you have to do individual transactions for each bitcoin address that you have had BTC prior to the August 1st fork?

I am hoping that you can move the funds all at once, because I literally used a new BTC address for each deposit, so there would be pages and pages of addresses that I would need to claim BCH for.

   Thanks!
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What will happen in the mining world with Bitcoin once all coins are mined? on: August 08, 2017, 06:48:35 PM
I guess this question pertains to Bitcoin as well as the newly created Bitcoin Cash.   Are there future plans for when all 21 million coins have been mined?  I have never mined, but I'm assuming the main goal of mining is to get the mining rewards of solving blocks.   Once all the coins are mined, what will be the incentive for people to continue running the expensive hardware and/or high utility bills if coins are no longer given as a reward?

I know that transaction fees will still be gained, but logically speaking, I don't think that would be enough to keep people mining, would it?

On a separate note, does bitcoin cash have a hard 21mill cap as well?
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / The use of cryptosteel and other hardware to back up private keys or seeds? on: August 08, 2017, 04:07:52 AM
Hey guys I have a question...I wasn't sure which section to post this into.   I had a question about Cryptosteel and other physical hardware products that are used to physically back up private keys and or seeds.

I was looking at the Cryptosteel.  They say on their website that you only need the first four letters of each word from your private seed.   Here is my question...just off the top of my head I can think of various words that have the same starting 4 letter combinations...

For example:

BOUN:
bounce
bouncer
bounces
bounty
bounties

BEGI:
begin
beginner
begins
beginners

SLAM:
slams
slammer
slammers
slamming

Those were just random 4 letter beginnings to words that came to mind when I was writing this thread.   If you are using physical hardware to backup a seed, how would you differentiate the words if you had to restore a wallet from a seed backup only having the first 4 letters of each word especially since the words don't ever make a logical sentence?

5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Most convenient place to buy BCH using USD in United States? on: August 06, 2017, 02:59:36 AM
Hey guys, have you guys found any easy sites to purchase bitcoin cash using US Dollars?  I'm considering buying some if prices drop into the $100s. I think there is some potential there while everyone is dumping it as fast as they can.  There doesn't seem to be any easy ways to purchase yet
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Since the fork have bitcoin transaction times sped up significantly? on: August 04, 2017, 02:36:51 PM
Hey everyone, I just want to throw the question out there since I don't make that many outgoing transactions from my bitcoin wallets. I am mainly long in all my wallets. Have bitcoin transactions sped up significantly since the fork?

I just logged into one of my wallets and it said that a transaction with a "regular" fee set would take 1+ hour to confirm.  Wasn't one of the main points of  the whole point of the fork to speed help speed up transaction times?
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Have any of you claimed your BCH using Trezor's coin splitting tool? on: August 03, 2017, 10:22:14 PM
Hi guys, have any of you used Trezor's coin splitting tool and their beta wallet to claim their BCH yet?   I am sitting on the sidelines waiting for a little more stability and time to pass because I am definitely a non-techie...and don't want to get myself into a situation that I can't work out of.

I was interested in knowing if any of you have successfully already done this and can share success (or horror) stories in claiming your bitcoin cash.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How many of you are moving all of your btc off coinbase? on: July 27, 2017, 04:16:45 AM
How many of you are completely moving your entire contents of btc off of coinbase prior to the 7/30 date like their support email specified to do if you didn't want your coins tied up there for a short period of time?

We don't know an ETA of how long funds should be tied up there right?  I don't store that much there, but I'm wondering if I should go through the motions of sending them to cold storage if it's just my loose spending money there.

I definitely won't be leaving multiple coins there but what are your guys thoughts on 1.5 btc or less?
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Looking back at really old transactions at today's value? on: July 24, 2017, 12:28:01 AM
Hey guys, do you ever look back at really old bitcoin transactions you made and see how much they are worth in today's value? Sometimes I like doing that. For instance, I look at some Super Bowl bets I made years ago and now some of them are like 3-5k. The dollar amount back then that was being bet was very small.

I was talking to about this to a friend of mine and he has a few lunches that he was paid back for in BTC that are now also worth several thousands of dollars.

Any good stories you guys have?  My friend got 500 BTC as a wedding present when they were $1 each. It came with a card that said "This is either going to be worth a ton of money one day, or I'm the dumbest person ever".

That is how I first heard about bitcoin.

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Automatically purchase of BTC or ETH at specific price on Coinbase? on: June 26, 2017, 04:27:30 PM
Hey guys...is there an option within coinbase to be able to set an automatic buy (or sell) order for BTC, ETH, or LTC if the price hits a specific price point?

I believe there used to be an option to do so.   I was going through the dashboard and settings today, and I can't find it.   You can set up re-occuring purchases (for BTC only), but I didn't see an option to place an order at a specific price.

I haven't used GDAX, but I know you can do that on normal exchanges (which Coinbase is obviously not an exchange per-say).  Coinbase is just the easiest for me since I am already set up

Or...if there isn't an option within coinbase...didn't someone create some sort of plug-in for their API that allowed you to set a specific buy order?

Thanks...
11  Other / Off-topic / Audible.com recommendations? on: June 08, 2017, 06:32:58 AM
Hey guys, recently I have gotten into listening to some of the books on audible.com.  I listen when going to bed because the TV keeps my gf awake and I'm a night owl.

Honestly some of the books I have heard on there are better than the movies that were written after the books. Thought I'd post here in off topic to see if you guys have any good recommendations?

I would highly recommend "The Power of the Dog" and "The Cartel" written by Don Winslow if you like stories about drug cartels.  Ray Porter is an awesome narrator too. Every story that I have heard read by him has been great.

I also liked Blake Crouch's "Dark Matter"

Any further suggestions?
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Using Bitcoin as down payment funds to purchase a new home with a mortgage... on: May 24, 2017, 08:40:27 PM
Hey guys...I am in the mortgage banking industry.  I am currently working on a deal to incorporate bitcoin into the down payment funds for a new purchase home loan.

I haven't seen this done before.  Have any of you?   I have seen homes sell for 100% bitcoin, but that is the same as purchasing a home with cash.

We are in contact with Fannie Mae, and it looks like it can be done as long as the bitcoins are first converted into US dollars and then deposited into a US bank account.  If you know banking guidelines, then you know that most money has to be seasoned for 60 days before it can be used for down payment funds.  We may be able to get around this if you can clearly be able to source the ownership of the bitcoins and clearly document the sale of the bitcoins along with the deposit into your bank account (like with a coinbase transaction history).

Do any of you have experience with this, or would you like to hear how it works out?

Edit 2/19/2018:    With proper documentation (and sourcing), Bitcoin can now be used for down payment funds without having to sell the BTC and hold the USD in your bank account for 30-60 days.
13  Economy / Web Wallets / Blockchain.info's default fee setting is too low? on: May 21, 2017, 02:43:20 PM
Hey everyone, I just wanted to throw it out there that I think blockchain.info's default fee setting has become too low to get confirmations when sending a transaction. When using a different wallet (such as a trezor, etc), I have always manually set the fee extra high so that the transaction gets confirmed quickly, but with blockchain.info I have always used the default fee setting.

I sent a transaction for around $350 (or somewhere around there) early on 5/17, and it has still yet to get a single confirmation. So if you need to send a transaction from this wallet, I would recommend manually raising the fee setting. I've never had a problem in the past until now.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Instructional Documentation for a Will or a Living Trust? on: June 02, 2016, 04:32:31 AM
Hey all....I was wondering if any of you knew of either a webpage, or any sort of documentation that can give an absolute newbie an instructional tutorial on how to restore/create a wallet, and use bitcoin.  I feel like there should be some sort of resource for people who have inherited or have come up on a wallet from a deceased relative.

I know that is kind of a broad request, but the reason I am asking is because I am working on a Living Trust.   No one in my family uses or even understands bitcoin.   If something were to happen to me, I would hope that my gf, daughter, family, etc. would be able to takeover my wallet, or restore some of my wallets.  None of them really want to take the time to learn at this point in time, but I was hoping to be able include some sort of instructions in with my trust.

Otherwise, If I were to die, the coins may just be sitting there forever.
15  Economy / Gambling / America's Card Room .... Anyone playing there by depositing bitcoin? on: April 21, 2016, 04:33:30 PM
Hey all...I was wondering if any of you who play online poker, stud, omaha, etc. have played on America's Card Room.   I know it has been slim pickings for US poker players since Black Friday.  I was reading on their webpage that they accept deposits in BTC AND process withdrawals in BTC.   Other websites that  I have seen such as Bovada accept BTC as a form of deposit, but then getting money off of the site could be difficult since they don't process withdrawals in BTC.

Has anyone played at America's Card Room, and if so...how is the action there?   I would imagine that most of the recreational players have ceased playing since Black Friday, leaving most grinders and regs just circling the money between each other.
16  Other / Off-topic / Any good books that you have read lately? on: November 03, 2015, 06:51:56 PM
Hey all...I recently have gotten back into reading a little bit.   Haven't really enjoyed doing it since I have been a kid, but for some reason it has sparked my interest lately.

I was wondering if any of you have read any great books that you can recommend?

I just finished Don Winslow's "Power of The Dog" and "The Cartel."

Both of these I would highly recommend if you are into reading about drug cartels, hitmen, etc.

If you could reply back with a brief description of the book, that would be great...thanks!
17  Other / Meta / Change in trust system, or glitch? on: May 25, 2015, 06:36:09 PM
I haven't seen this discussed anywhere, but after I changed my password and got logged back in (after the recent downtime), the trust points seem to have multiplied by like 20x

Has anyone else noticed this?   All of the comments and trust posts are still the same, but  the points are way way higher now.   Is this some sort of glitch?
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Does Satoshi Nakamoto work as a server as a day job? on: March 02, 2015, 07:05:06 PM
So I was at dinner the other night...and when I went to sign my bill, I noticed the name of my server.   So, does the creator of BTC work during the day as a waiter?   Tongue Tongue   (This is sarcasm)

They don't accept BTC, but when I asked him about it, he perked up and kind of smirked...

Have never met someone with the same name before...

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / So I asked Restoration Hardware if they would accept Bitcoin... on: September 16, 2014, 09:01:38 PM
I have been furnishing a new house over the past few months.  Man, the costs add up quicker than you would believe.   I have been picking up sofas and coffee tables (as well as some chairs) from Restoration Hardware (because I think they have some of the best stuff).

www.restorationhardware.com

Since all their stuff is so pricey  (5-10k for a sofa), I decided to ask them if they would accept BTC.   They got back to me today with the below response:

Thank you for contacting Restoration Hardware. I am delighted to know that you enjoy our pieces, and that you wish for us to receive Bitcoin as payment.

At this time, please be advised that we offer a variety of payment options, and I would be happy to submit your request for us to pursue Bitcoin.

Please know that I have noted your comments and forwarded them on to the appropriate department.

We always strive to offer our customers the best products and services possible. Your comments will help us to better achieve this goal in the future.

Please let us know if you need further assistance via email at webcs@restorationhardware.com or by calling 877-777-7059.

Again, thank you for contacting Restoration Hardware.

Sincerely,

It would be cool if they actually looked into adding BTC as a payment option, as to my knowledge, there aren't any higher end furniture stores accepting BTC.    Anyone else shop there?   Maybe if additional people asked...it would help steer them in the direction of BTC acceptance?
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Anyone know of any nice furniture stores that accept Bitcoin? on: September 15, 2014, 05:54:56 PM
Over the past year, I have seen a lot of tech companies start accepting BTC, but I was wondering if any of you know of any nice furniture stores that accept BTC?

I wish Restoration Hardware accepted BTC, because I really like a ton of their stuff.  I emailed support over there and asked if they would ever consider it, but I have not heard back yet.

I am in the middle of furnishing a new place, so I would be interested in hearing of any places that you guys know of...
