3  Economy / Service Announcements / [ANN] Geobit for Android - Geolocation and bitcoins on: April 14, 2015, 01:36:11 PM

Hello! we are excited to present you geobit, the next generation platform for promoting and advertising with geolocation and bitcoins.

How it works? It's an android app that let's you:
  • Find near promotions that offer you bitcoins to phisically reach other geobit promoters.
  • Create promotions to attract geobit users to your place, for example a shop.

Some screenshots:

Faqs:
  • Where is the old web site? It had a design flaw solved with the client application, see next question
  • Is this secure/scam? The client app has an integrated deterministic bitcoin wallet (based on bitcoinj) and the passphrase never leave the client device.
  • What about Fake GPS? For getting promos you need to get data from the promoter device. This is actually done via qr code scanning. You can't get promotion just based on you position cause it's easily fakeable.
  • Is the software open-source? Not yet.
4  Economy / Service Discussion / Blockchain API address balance response times from Italy on: June 30, 2014, 08:33:36 AM
Hi,

i am asking balance of various bitcoin addresses to various blockchain API provider and i wanted to share response times achieved

The requests are made in round robin in a 3 day time span from a server located in Italy.

Code:
n= 4174 m=   79 v=  223 min=   26 max= 3000 http://btc.blockr.io/api/v1
n= 4173 m=  256 v=  816 min=   42 max=20023 http://blockchain.info
n= 4170 m=  412 v=  703 min=  111 max=17432 http://blockexplorer.com
n= 4170 m=  419 v=  283 min=  232 max= 3332 http://mainnet.helloblock.io/v1
n= 4174 m=  463 v= 1377 min=   35 max=32070 https://api.biteasy.com/blockchain/v1
n= 4170 m=  496 v=  647 min=  129 max= 5131 http://api.blockcypher.com/v1/btc/main
n= 4167 m=  954 v= 1719 min=  114 max=20023 https://api.chain.com/v1/bitcoin

n is the number of request, m is the mean response time, v is the variance.

If others API developer would like their service to be included in the list, reply with you api reference docs and it will be added.
5  Economy / Service Discussion / The block chain API hell on: April 18, 2014, 12:56:31 PM
Hi,

i am developing a bitcoin-based service.
I am using blockchain api to ask various information, to be specific i am calling this endpoints:

https://blockchain.info/q/addressbalance/{BTCADDRESS}
https://blockchain.info/address/{BTCADDRESS}
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/{TXINDEX}
https://blockchain.info/pushtx

The problem is that i want a failover solution because ddos happens on blockchain.info (like now)

The only endpoint that i found has a compatible alternative is the first:
https://blockexplorer/q/addressbalance/{BTCADDRESS}
Also in this case there is a small problem, blockchain returns value in satoshi, blockeplorer returns it in bitcoins. But this is just the smaller problem...

Others endpoints have some equivalent services but with completely different json format on blockr, biteasy, abe, apicoin...

Or i am missing something or i strongly believe standard base API for querying bitcoin blockchain would give great benefit to bitcoin-based services
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How does Ripple solve the double-spend problem? on: February 13, 2014, 04:29:10 PM
There is the same question posted on the bitcoin stack exchange
http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/7550/how-does-ripple-solve-the-double-spend-problem

The fact is that the Luca Matteis answer that i personally believe more has less point than the one by David Schwartz.

Is David right? Because that's what it seem from that page.
If David is right Bitcoin mining is pure nonsense, otherwise vote the answer of Luca!
7  Local / Mining (Italiano) / [ANN] Nuovo p2pool italiano Dogecoin - xp2p.it on: February 06, 2014, 07:53:41 PM
Buonasera,

URL http://xp2p.it

Esempio:
./cgminer --scrypt -o xp2p.it:9555 -u DFdNs6DgZzVbRjDpNx6CfsuNhFDcz73H9R -p x

8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin network should be sustained by distributed renewable energy on: January 08, 2014, 07:32:56 PM
Bitcoin network should be sustained by distributed renewable energy, both sides have advantages.
Miners save money from the electricity bill and the plant doesn't need to be connected to the grid. Desired side effect? Reducing carbon footprint of the planet.
It's the perfect marriage.

I already have a 6kw photovoltaic power plant grid connected, obviously it's useless for my miners when sun is not shining.
I have 3 project in mind for the new year, money and time permitting:
  • Another 6 kW photovoltaic power plant with 20kWh battery accumulation system. This isn't really autonomous because it's over my house, so it automatically switch to grid power if battery drawns. Anyway all the producted energy is used by 1kWh miners, it's about 6600kWh/year @Milano, Italy. With local tarif it's a saving of  1500 eur. The plant costs about 12k eur but gives a tax saving of 50% in 10 years. With this condition the investment is repaid in about 6 years
  • 400W wind turbine with X kwh battery accumulation system and wind-adjustable miner. This is a test system for something bigger, i haven't wind data for the designed location, but i know it's a windy place. Need to determine battery size also leveraging miner could be turned off in case of no wind. For eolic good location could be remote offshore area otherwise impossible to phisically connect to the grid
  • 1kWh idraulic turbine, like others i have the location, but using public water from the small river needs permission. This is the most remote at the moment

Available for any question or criticism.
Following updates on the project in this thread or on twitter @RCasatta
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin address with identity on: December 19, 2013, 09:52:26 AM
Hi bitcoiners,

Some days ago i asked a "famous bitcoin guy" a question, he answered so i donated him a small bitcoin amount.
To recognize my donation i send him the link of the transaction id on blockchain but i realized that this method was not enough to grant that i make the donation.
The "famous bitcoin guy" believed me Smiley but i start thinking that anonymous address are ok in many situation but a simple way to associate identity to a bitcoin address could be useful in some situation and currently i don't know if something like that exist.

Technically could work as an HTTP services like that:

GET http://address-identity-url/{bitcoin-address}
return 404 not found or a custom string that could be the real name of the {bitcoin-address} owner

POST http://address-identity-url/{bitcoin-address}
write the custom string at that URL, to be succesfull you need to provide an header with the signature generated by the private key of the {bitcoin-address}

This way, only the owner of the {bitcoin-address} could post on http://address-identity-url/{bitcoin-address}

Before start implementing i would like opinion about this service.
Currently, are there other way for optionally associating identity to a bitcoin address?
Are there simple way to sign generic data with bitcoin wallet?
I think could be really useful, do you?

UPDATE for clarification based on answer:
This is an optional feature totally controlled by the owner of the bitcoin address
The service could also work in the opposite direction, knowing bitcoin address starting with the identity
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Associate identity to Bitcoin Address on: December 16, 2013, 11:29:39 AM
Hi,

in blockchain.info, some known bitcoin address are tagged (like satoshi dice or lucky bit)
I thought was only public address but i see also private person could associate their name to the address (eg. https://blockchain.info/it/address/15qSxP1SQcUX3o4nhkfdbgyoWEFMomJ4rZ)

How to do that?

I think that could be usefull in some situation where senders want to be easily recognized by receiver
