Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen: The 60 Minutes Interview

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lx5VmAdZSI&ab_channel=60Minutes

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-misinformation-public-60-minutes-2021-10-03/
Part of the text in the above link:

"Her name is Frances Haugen. That is a fact that Facebook has been anxious to know since last month when an anonymous former employee filed complaints with federal law enforcement. The complaints say Facebook's own research shows that it amplifies hate, misinformation and political unrest—but the company hides what it knows. One complaint alleges that Facebook's Instagram harms teenage girls. What makes Haugen's complaints unprecedented is the trove of private Facebook research she took when she quit in May. The documents appeared first, last month, in the Wall Street Journal. But tonight, Frances Haugen is revealing her identity to explain why she became the Facebook whistleblower.

Facebook's response to 60 Minutes' report, "The Facebook Whistleblower"
Facebook whistleblower says company incentivizes "angry, polarizing, divisive content"
Frances Haugen: The thing I saw at Facebook over and over again was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook. And Facebook, over and over again, chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money.

Frances Haugen is 37, a data scientist from Iowa with a degree in computer engineering and a Harvard master's degree in business. For 15 years she's worked for companies including Google and Pinterest.

Frances Haugen: I've seen a bunch of social networks and it was substantially worse at Facebook than anything I'd seen before.

Scott Pelley: You know, someone else might have just quit and moved on. And I wonder why you take this stand.

Frances Haugen: Imagine you know what's going on inside of Facebook and you know no one on the outside knows. I knew what my future looked like if I continued to stay inside of Facebook, which is person after person after person has tackled this inside of Facebook and ground themselves to the ground.

Scott Pelley: When and how did it occur to you to take all of these documents out of the company?

Frances Haugen: At some point in 2021, I realized, "Okay, I'm gonna have to do this in a systemic way, and I have to get out enough that no one can question that this is real."

3  Other / Politics & Society / "We Don’t Know What’s Going To Happen With COVID & That’s Okay" on: September 09, 2021, 05:15:34 AM
"We Don’t Know What’s Going To Happen With COVID & That’s Okay"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVjLT3pinW0&t=34s

Doctor Mike:

"Dr. Zubin Damania, or ZDoggMD, is one of the original doctors who brought fun and valuable medical information to YouTube. Given the utter chaos happening around the world right now in regards to COVID-19, I needed to bring in my long time friend and godfather of medfluencing to ease my pain and vent about what’s going on. In this hour-long conversation we hit on all things COVID, from booster shots, masks in schools, mandatory vaccinations, tribalism, trusting Dr. Anthony Fauci, conspiracy theories, the Delta variant, and our prediction for where all of this is heading."

Borrowed from a youTube poster:

Timestamps of the [excellent] discussion:
1:07 tribalism, divisiveness, productive/unproductive/harmful conversations, same goals different tactics
5:03 how to bring back rational thinking and find truth, "alt-middle"
7:54 how social media could be better at managing misinformation

12:27 talking about ideas from various authorities in medicine, how they could communicate better, credibility and integrity (13:19 Fauci example) vs media spins, hard when we talk in soundbytes about things too complex for that

17:33 more about Dr. Mike's evidence rating scale idea, good and bad of social media, how to talk about challenging/nuanced ideas, thinking critically vs speaking in absolutes
21:39 the power of empathy, especially when you disagree
23:49 human connection, seeing the good, helping others understand, antivaxxers, correlation vs causation, how to understand the data, don't villainize people
26:59 thoughts on vaccine mandates, coercion vs communication, risks and benefits,
28:55 we have more people to save, more deaths than just COVID-19 as hospitals are overrun and can't treat other ailments and overall health worsens
31:23 how to get people to change their behavior, social pressure is needed (but doesn't have to be bad), systems thinking balanced with individual behavior,
33:25 financial effect of shutdowns, how to save the most lives, target efforts where you have a better chance to intervene, responsibility
36:25 responsibility to help people make good decisions, bad political declarations that might be harmful or later need to change, difficulty handling this as a politician because of how our system works

39:20 where do you see this heading, comfort from vaccination prospects vs fire that is delta variant, changing dynamics, maintaining immune response,
43:36 future prediction, boosters, closing schools, kids at risk?
46:27 masking in schools, distance learning disadvantages lower socioeconomic kids, use de-escalation strategies as we ease back in (keep masks/distance, watch and see, don't change too many variables at once) to make in-person learning as safe as possible
48:59 people resistant to being told what to do, latching on to false things because we want them to be true
50:22 randomized controlled trials needed (but we don't have the time to risk, so mask up in the meantime), we don't have all the info and that's hard, follow the science
52:52 cognitive bias and info we want to disagree with, benefits of having humility to challenge our previous thinking and adjust to new info

54:38 hard to keep up with all the new info, people are desperate for less biased sources, important to take a break and connect as regular humans too, not just fixating on doom and gloom
57:00 the evidence for months has been to get vaccinated
57:37 variants: how and why they happen, how a variant can be most effective at hurting us, where can it go from Delta
1:02:17 Dr. Damania variant prediction
1:03:43 final thoughts

Your thoughts?
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Are there any blockchain role playing games worth playing? on: August 31, 2021, 08:23:32 AM
                                                                                                   I'm not interested in ICOs

I'm interested in staking my daughter who has played Final Fantasy for over 15 years and is a League of Legends junkie.

I'm asking because I saw a coin called "My Neighbor Alice" and that's probably not one I'd chose because it is going to have to be good enough for her to want to play but I've seen a few articles indicating that a decent crypto MMO/RPG might be near.

Coindesk's latest:  https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2021/08/27/blockchain-role-playing-game-mir4-launches-in-170-countries-alongside-utility-coin/

Also don't waste time in "general warnings against this type of investment"---"Video game money" is what interested me in bitcoin in the first place.

How do they work?

Proof of stake and then ...you "mine" or "forge" by playing?

It had live market prices for a few of the relevant crypto currencies, precious metals and quick market stats.

Recommendations would be appreciated.

9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Coinbase vs. Kraken (BTC vs. BCH) on: July 29, 2017, 04:42:47 AM
It has been interesting to witness the evolution of bitcoin.
I've mined, traded, spent and held.

Two very different emails:

COINBASE:
Dear Coinbase Customer,

We are contacting you to make you aware of recent developments in a number of proposals for technical changes to Bitcoin. All BTC stored on Coinbase will remain safe during these events described below.

The User Activated Hard Fork (UAHF) is a proposal to increase the Bitcoin block size scheduled to activate on August 1. The UAHF is incompatible with the current Bitcoin ruleset and will create a separate blockchain. Should UAHF activate on August 1, Coinbase will not support the new blockchain or its associated coin.

The User Activated Soft Fork (UASF) is a proposal to adopt Segregated Witness on the Bitcoin blockchain and could result in network instability. It is scheduled to activate at the same time as the UAHF.

To ensure the safety of customers’ funds, we will temporarily suspend BTC deposits, withdrawals, and buy/sell starting approximately 4 hours before activation of either fork.
•If you do not wish to have access to UAHF coins, and do not wish to access your BTC during the fork, you are not required to take any action.
•If you do wish to have access to UAHF coins or access your BTC during the fork, you should send your BTC from Coinbase to your external address by July 31.

For more information on these potential Bitcoin forks, please refer to this article: https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/2844217-uahf-uasf-faq.

Thank you

KRAKEN
Hi Tanya,

We have posted an important announcement on our blog about the “Bitcoin Cash” (BCH) hard fork that will happen on August 1. Everyone should read the complete post, but here are a few highlights from the post:
•Kraken plans to support BCH on our platform for funding and trading in the pairs BCH/XBT, BCH/USD, BCH/EUR
•Clients holding Bitcoin (XBT) balances at the time of the fork will be credited with an equal amount of Bitcoin Cash (BCH) - e.g. 1 XBT will result in 1 XBT + 1 BCH
•Clients borrowing Bitcoin (XBT) for margin positions at the time of the fork will be debited an equal amount of Bitcoin Cash (BCH) - e.g. if you borrow 1 XBT you must pay back 1 XBT + 1 BCH
•Margin traders should read the blog post carefully to understand the added risk and how margin trading will work across the fork
•The BCH fork is planned for 12:20 pm UTC on August 1
•Bitcoin (XBT) funding will be halted at 11 am UTC and resumed sometime after the fork when it is safe to do so
•Trading will continue across the fork, but we may need to halt trading briefly around the time of the fork so we can adjust balances and add pairs

New Blog
http://blog.kraken.com/post/1150/bitcoin-cash-and-a-critical-alert-for-bitcoin-margin-traders/

We have just launched a major update to the Kraken blog, so when you visit you will notice that it looks very different. The new blog not only looks better, but is hosted on a new platform that will allow us to publish new kinds of content - including the Kraken Daily Market Report, published every day around 2pm PT, with a “heat map” summary of the previous 24 hours of trade action. Take a moment to subscribe to the new blog, by email or RSS!

Thank you for choosing Kraken, the trusted and secure digital assets exchange.

10  Other / Politics & Society / Will we ever vote 'only' on a digitally distributed public ledger? on: November 16, 2016, 09:44:44 PM

11  Other / Politics & Society / Supporting A [decentralized] New World Order. on: November 12, 2016, 09:38:21 AM
Yes I do realize what the original term is supposed to imply (lol..even beyond a History channel documentary :-).

Because my belief is that you shouldn’t complain if you don’t vote… I watched every (rude, sophomoric, petty, embarrassing, uninformative) presidential debate, forced myself to vote for the least-worst candidate, and waited for the results.
The outcome was more disappointing to me than I’d imagined.
A few things occur to me:
Countries who vote for leaders in this connected era are now, more than ever making global choices with global consequences.
Those global citizens didn’t get a vote.

Decentralized: this concept is often the hang up when explaining bitcoin/Bitcoin and even those of us who use it can observe the many ways in which it continually resists and gives in to organization.
I semi-secretly observe it as experiment in free market capitalization.
“Free to Choose” comes to mind often
While exchanges go down, hashing power/hard forks get debated and most interesting: the loss of real competition in mining gear.

We are the exercise of a new type of “New World Order” often in raw real time…except
that we are potentially forming or adding to the foundations of a decentralized global citizenship.
You are not so much of a “they” to me my friends.

14  Other / Off-topic / Ok. Somebody please direct me to the "Ebay is pissing me off thread" on: June 19, 2016, 11:30:37 PM
I've been a seller for over a decade. They put out a promotion to sell everything for $50 final insertion value for the month of June.
Today I got my several hundred dollar invoice, made the call, to find out the credit will be given next month (after my invoice is paid).

Ugh...pft.

that's all for now. Wouldn't suck so bad if I wasn't getting ready to move across country and the sale of my house wasn't going to be delayed due to f'n financing that I questioned my broker about when I first got the offer.

Where's the thread? I want to bitch.

Thanks in advance ;-)
