62  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Request: Suggestions on Where To Put $1000 on: January 04, 2015, 04:13:16 AM
Hi,

I have between $500 - $1000 to invest in bitcoin and was thinking to go with two Bitmain S5.   I did gpu mining for a while and it was fun and interesting but it takes too much of my time so I'm looking for a simpler solution.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'm okay with any ideas.  I do prefer to have my own equipment so that's why I like the idea of having a bimain or asic on hand.  But, if there were a decent cloud mining solution that was close to profit of having your own equipment I'd be okay with that.

I know about electricity costs and such.

Thanks for any inputs.
63  Economy / Economics / Zero Sum Game Theory on: January 03, 2015, 08:11:36 PM
A few years ago, 3 economists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for their work showing how zero sum game theory could be used to stabilize economies.  The gist of it is that things should cost what they are worth and people should get what they pay for.  The zero sum game theory was even used to restructure executive pay scales after the bailouts a few years back.

Problems, BIG problems, are created when there are vast inequalities between what something is actually worth and how much money goes into it.  In the immediate history it is what causes our current cyclical recessions and in the long run could even result in another great depression.

Of course, contributing factors are scarce goods and finite resources.  Money is a finite resource to a point in that it has limits on production but can also be unpredictable because more can always be printed off.

How does Bitcoin fit into all this?  Is it too much of a scarce resource since it's limited to a certain production amount?  Would other crypto currencies simply step in when Bitcoin becomes too scarce or too divided up to be feasible?

But more to the point of zero sum, how can Bitcoin contribute to a world economy where goods and services are exchanged for the appropriate price that doesn't result in overages or shortages that ultimately cause more economic bubbles bursting?  Can the force of greed ever be overcome?
64  Economy / Services / ★☆★ Proof Read & Edit Service: College // Legal Documents // Contracts ★☆★ on: January 03, 2015, 03:35:19 AM
I offer my proof reading and editing services for your personal or professional endeavors.  I'm excited to help you sharpen your college paper, catch critical data points in legal or contractual documents, or to simply liven up an otherwise vacuous document.  Once work is assigned I'll work with you until we both agree the document is the best.  There is no additional charge for revisions.  Feel free to PM me with any questions/inquiries.

50% payment is required upfront before any work is complete and the remainder is due immediately upon receipt of completed work.  I'm open to using escrow services as long as we both agree on the service provider.

See my fees and my experience below.  Fees are based on urgency and size of work:

72-hour or less turnaround = minimum of BTC.08 per document and an additional BTC.05 per three additional pages after the first three.  So a 72-hour or less turn on 1-3 pages is BTC.08.  4-6 page papers costs BTC.13.  7-9 pages costs BTC.18.

24-hour or less turnaround = minimum of BTC.15 and an additional BTC.1 per three additional pages.  24-hour or less turn around on a 1-3 page document would be BTC.15.  4-6 pages costs BTC.25 and price progression continues as described above.

Again, just contact me if you have questions or want price quotes for larger orders.

66  Bitcoin / Mining / Sidelined on: November 25, 2014, 04:38:02 AM
I'm a newbie GPU miner.  I chose GPUs and still would because I enjoy the flexibility of gliding across the algorithm spectrum over which bitcoin reigns.  I held out and mined as long as I could to attain the almighty bitcoin.  Finally, I've come to the conclusion that my miners will sit idle until the crypto scene is once again profitable here in the land of $.15 per Kw/hour electricity.

It hasn't even been a year since I started which leaves me with severely dashed hopes.  But I am still hopeful for crypto to once again make headlines and have GPU prices soaring far past what they should be.

I'm proud of my own accomplishments even though I haven't yet been profitable.  I built a respectable fleet of miners totalling 15 GPUs across 5 platforms.  I gained an appreciation for server managers as they are surely profiting despite recent slow downs.  I sorted through code, learned about compilation and dependencies and tweaked/optimized feverishly to attain optimized mining results.

I do continue mining on some cards that are more cost effective so I have some meager bitcoin coming my way but not much.  I'm eyeing the markets like a hawk and hope to see my GPUs reenter the fray someday.

This has been a fun and enlightening experience.  I understand what bitcoin is and I couldn't really say that a year ago.  For all the good, for all the evil, for everything in between... I'm glad and looking forward to what comes next even though I admit defeat for now.

I know... I know, cool story, thx for sharing, etc etc.  Sorry if you read this far and feel it was nothing worth reading but I'm certainly not sorry for typing it.
67  Economy / Speculation / BTC Value on: September 23, 2014, 01:28:15 AM
My opinion is that BTC value may be degraded as other crypto currencies take root:

1)  A core belief in BTC is the value of cost effective financial mechanisms but other currencies can do this just as well.  Therefore, what may be 'special' about BTC may also be easily duplicated in other similar mechanisms and for just as much if not a better value.

2) The hay-day of independent mining may soon end as the process is industrialized.  Think about it, if everyone could print money, they would.  It's not just that it's illegal, it's also that it's not cost effective for people to manage.  Similar parallels can be drawn to the current scenario.

I'm all for BTC reversing it's current negative trend.  I would even like it if mining were profitable to the layperson.  But the above two thoughts occurred to me and I can see several good reasons for the future of the layperson in crypto currency to be grim.

Now, before you scream, "FUD", let me clarify that I think crypto currency has already proven to have a bright future.  I just think the bonanza days are about done.  Of course, I'm not selling my video cards just yet but I don't hold much hope for them being useful again.  And my two thoughts above probably aren't all that original... just seemed like it is relevant to what is actually happening in the crypto economy.

69  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / GPU vs ASIC Network Hash Stats? on: June 13, 2014, 11:53:12 PM
Is there any way to discern what share of hash power is contributed by GPU vs ASIC on any given algo?  I think it would tell us a lot about the significance of ASICs impact to various indicators: difficulty, coin price...

From my narrow view point, it seems that GPUs are most present on multi-algo profit-switching pools.
70  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Best Algo / Coin to mine with 750 ti? on: June 10, 2014, 02:06:27 AM
Subject says it all.  Any opinions on what is best to mine with 750 Ti?  I'm currently on X11.  I've heard some good things about JPC or TAC but I'm not sold yet.  Any links to good discussion are appreciated.  Ignorants need not reply.

73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Regarding Profit and Recent BTC Price on: April 11, 2014, 02:34:46 AM
So I was concerned today when I saw the BTC price around $350.  I immediately went to dustcoin.com for a quick WAG on what profits may still be.  I was happy to see profits of $200 per month were still possible with my mining config (6.3 Mh/s, 2KW @ .10 cents per watt).

Keep calm and mine on!

76  Economy / Marketplace / Proposed Boycott of "Mining" GPU on: January 10, 2014, 05:44:27 AM
Enough is enough.  Proposing 1-week boycott of anything more than 20% over MSRP.
77  Economy / Marketplace / [General Marketplace Topic] GPU Prices: Be Patient on: December 31, 2013, 07:42:46 PM
Just a commentary on the current GPU price fiasco.  I always say, "don't buy at inflated prices."  Half the morons buying "mining" GPUs now at 33% and higher markups are the same idiots that will have their crap on ebay in a few weeks because they decided mining wasn't for them.  By that time, the flood of back-orders will also hit the market and sane $300 or less for NIB GPUs will return--Hell, if you're lucky you got some MSRP prices even amid the recent price gouges.  Nubs on ebay or other places will then scratch their heads like, "wtf, these sold for $400 less than a week ago!".  Meanwhile, GPUs and related items like the Asrock 61 and 81 mobos will be back on Newegg and other sites for $60 with free shipping instead of $120+ shipping from our recent and profiteering friends in Taiwan.

My advice: take it easy, cheesy.

80  Other / Beginners & Help / I Am Newbie! on: December 23, 2013, 06:25:01 AM
Hi, posting this so that I may post in other forum threads as well.  May as well introduce myself as well.  I've been working in IT for 21 years.  First tried bit mining about 2 years ago and failed miserably because I was more into learning some LUA and XML scripts... okay I was playing a video game.  So yeah, now I'm kicking myself for not taking the bit mining more seriously.  Needless to say, I have my meek HD 4850 cards cranking out as much as they can muster (about 200Kh/s) and now seek more entry into bit mining by attaining equipment and currency however I may.  First opportunity to gain some coin has been realized by reading in these forums.  So... off I go.

Thank you in advance for any welcoming :-)
