21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / The Bitcoin Legal Thinktank weekly meeting in New York City on: May 08, 2011, 01:44:46 PM

A serious discussion about exchange sites will require a Bitcoin Legal Thinktank (made up of actual lawyers, regulators and such).  It's all about the legal issues. The tech issues are easy by comparison.

I decided yesterday to form exactly that.... here in New York City.

We will be hosting a weekly Bitcoin Legal Thinktank Meeting here at our OnlyOneTV Studios on 5th Ave in New York City.... specifically for attorneys, regulatory people, etc. to brainstorm on legal issues around Bitcoin --- mass acceptance, exchange sites / businesses (especially within the US), etc.

No, it will not be taped or broadcast.  (Unless attendees surprise me by telling me that they want it to be.)   It will be a recurring private meeting.

If you are, or know anyone who is, an attorney or otherwise works in the fields of regulation around money, banking, etc...   Please contact me directly for an invitation.  bruce@onlyonetv.com or telephone or text:  646-580-0022

If you are in (or passing through) New York City, that would be perfect.  If you can only attend via skype, that can be arranged as well.   We currently have the capacity for up to 35 simultaneous attendees via skype (although we expect this group to be much smaller).

Of course, you know I'll be regularly updating you all on our findings and conclusions...  here and on The Bitcoin Show (and El Show de Bitcoin en Espanol)... on OnlyOneTV.com

Please have all your attorney friends who have any interest in Bitcoin contact me directly -- no matter what city or country they are in.   Ok?

Bitcoin Conference 2011 NYC

EDIT:  We have announced that it WILL be August 19-21, here in NYC, at the OnlyOneTV Studios.   And the BIGGEST DAY of the event will be Saturday August 20. ...and that will be at the Roosevelt Hotel, in Vanderbilt Hall.

See http://bitcoinconference.com

______

We're happy to host the event at our new OnlyOneTV Studios here on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City.   We have the entire 5th floor, lots of room, lots of internet, etc.  ....and restaurants deliver free.  :-)

I'm envisioning presentations.... even "booths" or tables...  and hackathons with specific objectives.   We can even go into the wee hours if we want to.

What could be more fun?

on OnlyOneTV.com

Check it out on http://onlyonetv.com soon!  (We'll have it uploaded within a couple hours from now.)

Also, it's been very difficult for me to keep up with the Forum here because of the volume of activity....  And because I have been so busy with my new ventures like OnlyOneTV.... so if you want to reach me here in the forum, reply to this thread.  I'll bookmark this thread and attempt to keep up with it at least once a day.

[PC World] Federal Authorities in Costa Roca Confiscate Servers of Popular Bitcoin Exchange Site MtGox

Breaking News:  Very early Friday morning, approximately 4:30am Central Time, authorities from the "Department of Commerce and Taxation" in Costa Rica stormed into the data center housing servers which run the popular exchange site for the alternative digital currency Bitcoin. Costa Rican authorities seized five computers in total. Two are believed to be servers which run the exchange site. The site was off-line for about three hours. Insiders speculate that a mirror site containing a backup of the main site was hastily brought online from a different unknown location and  […]  http://bit.ly/eCTFki

27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A Bitcoin Address "DNS" on: February 23, 2011, 03:56:46 PM
A Bitcoin Address "DNS"

A friend who's brand new to Bitcoin handed me a tiny piece of paper yesterday.  He said, "Here's my Bitcoin address."  It contained his Bitcoin address in about 6 point type, printed on paper.  Smiley

I smiled and handed it back to him.  Obviously, he hadn't TIT, as I always say (Think It Through.... or Thought It Through).

A Better Idea for BitcoinAddress.com

I thought of this idea just now...

Adding a shorthand nickname to the BitcoinAddress.com directory.... and it be sorted by that.

So, if I go by "plankhead" all over the internet, I can be listed as plankhead on BitcoinAddress.com

This way, people could potentially prA int on their business card...

Email:  zack@plankhead.com
Telephone:  646-555-4321
Bitcoin:  plankhead

By default, I would give people (1) their top level domain - like eff or epicchange - or (2) their bitcoin forum handle - brucewagner

Not sure how I'll handle other requests.  Perhaps a registration fee that goes entirely to the Bitcoin Foundation, to be used for Bitcoin promotion, advertising, and evangelizing.

"Welcome to the official site for the new Broadway-bound Musical Comedy A Cruise Line. We are currently in the midst of a crowdfunding effort to fund the First Wave of this show--casting the actors and getting them into the recording studio to add vocals to near-finished tracks and then begin rehearsals on the workshop performance in May 2011."

34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Major Retail Point of Sale Initiative in USA on: January 05, 2011, 05:49:49 PM
Our little "New York City Bitcoin Users Meetup" we created on meetup.com ( http://www.meetup.com/bitcoin/ ) has yielded some major brainstorming, collaboration, and development projects.   For example, there is now a new Bitcoin Users Meetup in the Washington, DC area too. ( http://www.meetup.com/BitcoinDC/ )

Also...  Here in New York City, our little group is already working on quickly developing two FOSS software products:

  • Bitcoin POS (& SDK)
  • Bitcoin AH

The point of sale software (& SDK) is the component that the retail store merchant runs.
Many Bitcoin POS stations talk to one Bitcoin AH (Account Hub).
The Bitcoin AH processes transactions instantly.

The Bottom Line:

Customer walks into coffee shop.  Orders coffee.  At cash register he says, "I'd like to pay with Bitcoin please".  Merchant touches the "Bitcoin" button on his cash register, the cash register displays, "Code: 736".  Merchant tells customer "Code 736".  The Customer then touches the "Pay" button (on the Bitcoin App on his Android or iPhone), and his app prompts him to touch in the code, "736".  The app displays, "Chelsea Coffee, Mocha Latte large, US$2.57, BTC 8.57".  Customer touches "Yes" button.  Cash register instantly says, "Paid".
Done.

A Bit about How it Works:

On the Bitcoin AH ( account hub ) side, the coffee shop's POS system sends an "invoice" to it.... which the AH matches to the customer's Pay command by cordinating geolocation + time + unique 3 digit code.

( If the Geolocations do not match, and only the Time and the Code match, an additional confirmation prompt will pop up, so that telephone orders could also be processed with this same system.  For example, it will pop up a message to say, "You are in Toledo, OH and you are about to make a payment to London, England, UK. Is this correct?" )

All of this software will be free open source.

Meanwhile, we are also working with 3 point of sale / cash register vendors.... including 2 of the most used restaurant / coffee shop cash register systems in Manhattan... to get them to include the Bitcoin POS components.

So far, 1 has already agreed to do so.

:-)

But I just discovered them.     Pretty awesome stuff.       It's inspiring an interest in economics for me....  which I've never had.    Ever.

37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / MyBitcoin: Email me a Monthly Statement on: December 15, 2010, 08:35:46 PM
Because I can see a potential problem...   FORGETTING that you even HAVE created some alternate MyBitcoin account...  (It's so easy to create one... then promptly forget that you created it!)

My Suggestion for a Solution:

_______________

I think there should be a Setting that offers to:

"Email a Monthly Statement to Me"

And the default setting should be ON.

Optionally, for security / privacy concerns, there could be a Sub-Setting under that:

   "Email My Statement"

     ~~or~~

"Email a Link to My Statement"

Thoughts?

38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Point of Sale Technical Issues on: December 15, 2010, 04:50:28 AM
We're contemplating a point of sale solution for bitcoin.

The issue we're concerned about is transaction processing time.

If a bitcoin app was running on a smartphone,  how long would the transaction typically take to post  to a coffee shop's bitcoin application?

Obviously, we cannot wait an hour for the transaction to post in order to get our cafe latte.

40  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / safest way to backup and encrypt your wallet.dat on: December 07, 2010, 04:21:29 PM
I apologize for posting this as a new topic.  I'm sure it's been discussed at length before.  Can someone please point me to the thread that contains the defacto "best" way to backup (in many places) safely encrypted copies of your wallet.dat file...?

In other words, HOW best should the average not-too-too-technical user:

  • backup his wallet.dat file  (or multiple wallet.dat files?)
  • encrypt it
  • distribute backup copies all over the place
  • who to give the password to  (if anyone)

i.e.

Do you need to Quit the Bitcoin application before copying the file out?
Do you need to Delete the wallet.dat file that you copied out?   ...and let the app create a new one?   ...or just leave the original one there?
What will be the results of either of these actions?
What software should you use to encrypt your wallet.dat file before storing it?

I want to create a screencast How To video, for the http://bitcoinme.com site, and everywhere else, to teach the normal man-on-the-street user how to "back up his money file".   Smiley
