The BitSeeds project began in 2014 as a plan and then launched as a coin network in April of 2015. The BitSeeds project is the first official cryptocurrency of a major international charity, the Rainforest Foundation, the environmental charity co-founded by Sting in the 1980s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainforest_Foundation_US#History

The Rainforest Foundation has committed to using BitSeeds as an important funding source going forward, and now that we've relaunched with our new codebase we can move ahead with several major milestones planned for 2016 including spendable BitSeeds gift cards and our payment processor Coin.co coming online this summer.

Our original developer attempted to sabotage the project and abandoned it with broken mining and the network left running on POS only. We've now successfully relaunched with entirely new codebase and transitioned our existing users to the new chain. We've been testing mining successfully for about a week and a half now, deliberately starting with 1 week of zero block rewards before opening up to everyone with a second week with limited rewards of just 0.025 XSEED per block.

This give us plenty of time to test and to get the word out so people could point their SHA rigs at a BitSeeds pool and not be left out by a sneaky relaunch with initial high block rewards nobody gets a chance to mine.

As I write this, we're on block 3470 with almost exactly 2 days left before we go back to full 10 XSEED block rewards with block 4035. You can start mining anytime you'd like on our existing (wmikrut.com) pool listed above, and we welcome any pool owners who'd like to add us to do so and help support a good cause and a strong network.

Take a look at the post below for links to the complete wallet video course - these easy lessons teach even non-technical users how to use the BitSeeds wallet app and is designed as a great basic intro to new users of cryptocurrency as we begin heading into widespread adoption of blockchain-based currencies.

From the Rainforest Foundation, founding member of the BitSeeds Foundation:
“Immediately slowing or stopping the alarming rate of rainforest destruction is vital to society’s health and well-being. So we asked ourselves: how can we leverage more resources to support what we know are effective solutions? The scale of funding needed to halt or reverse rainforest destruction is so large that we can't just do what we've always done to raise funds. We need innovation. We need disruption.”
-Suzanne Pelletier, Executive Director of Rainforest Foundation US and founding member of the BitSeeds Foundation

What Is BitSeeds?
BitSeeds is a hybrid proof of work/proof of stake cryptocurrency network with the goal of raising money to assist the Rainforest Foundation (http://rainforestfoundation.org/bitseeds) in its mission of reforesting the planet. The custodial wallet owned by the Rainforest Foundation exists for the sole purpose of staking new BitSeeds each year to contribute to the Rainforest Foundation's mission and the success of the project.

The rate of deforestation is so enormous that in order to restore balance a disruption in traditional fund raising was needed. BitSeeds provides a cryptographic ledger with unique features specifically designed for not-for-profit organizations and driving merchant adoption. Ecosystem development is an ongoing process spearheaded by the BitSeeds Foundation.

Why Is the BitSeeds Project Necessary?
BitSeeds adds ecosystem-specific remittance rails for charitable donations and a blockchain robust enough to accommodate future development. Every commercial transaction conducted within the remittance rail has the value added benefit of a charitable tax deduction, beyond the normal cost savings of cryptocurrency adoption. Individuals are then incentivized to hold and stake BitSeeds in personal wallets not simply to support the network, but support the greater mission of the Rainforest Foundation to reforest the planet.

"The simple act of holding BitSeeds makes the world a better place because you are investing in the mission of the Rainforest Foundation to reforest the planet."

What Is The BitSeeds Foundation?
The BitSeeds Foundation is a not-for-profit entity registered in the state of Nevada. More information may be found at the BitSeeds website (http://BitSeeds.org).

Why Is BitSeeds Important?
Cryptocurrencies are a means to give people hope, and that is the primary use case of BitSeeds. Beyond the stated mission, the BitSeeds Foundation is committed to furthering the partnership of cryptocurrencies and charity and offers its network and support services to any charity that wishes to implement a safe and healthy digital currency into their fundraising efforts.

Why Not Use Another Currency?
While BitSeeds could not exist without blockchain technology, other networks may not suitable for most charity organizations.

What Makes BitSeeds Different?
While boasting a number of technological advances which make it superior to other currencies, BitSeeds has a real mission to guide its development and growth. The core mission of reforesting the planet always takes precedence over other concerns. Without distractions, the work of the Rainforest Foundation and the BitSeeds Foundation can continue with minimal outside risk.
Why Would Merchants Use BitSeeds?

Merchant adoption is driven through a custom remittance system being developed by Coin.co (http://coin.co). 1.25% of every transaction processed will be sent to the BitSeeds Custody Address. Merchants will be presented with a yearly accounting and requisite paperwork for tax purposes.

Every transaction completed through this process is a charitable tax deduction for the accepting merchant and a great incentive for adoption that goes beyond the usual savings of cryptocurrencies compared to credit cards.

How Do You Plan To Plant 1,000,000,000 Trees?
That's the best part about BitSeeds: all of the necessary experience, expertise, ingenuity, and infrastructure are already there! It's all built and ready. All the Rainforest Foundation needs is funding from the public to expand 30+ year old reforestation operations to levels never seen before. BitSeeds will provide jobs, infrastructure, and raise the standards of living for the poorest in the world. This project is already in motion. BitSeeds makes more of it happen, faster.

To make this initiative possible, each year BitSeeds will yield 10% interest to each person who holds the currency. At the launch of the currency, 100 million BitSeeds were set aside in a special wallet owned by the Rainforest Foundation that will generate interest through staking. The yearly interest income the Rainforest Foundation receives will enable them to help local communities conserve and restore forests on a scale never before possible.

With a traditional donation to a charity, a person gets something symbolic but not very useful like a tote bag or a mug as a thanks for their donation; starting soon when someone donates to the Rainforest Foundation they will receive a gift card loaded with BitSeeds, allowing them to turn around and spend some or all of the money they just donated, while still knowing they're helping the Rainforest Foundation's mission and enjoying the benefits of a tax deduction!

3  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum custom data folder error (Mac OS) on: January 03, 2014, 01:35:53 AM
Hi. I was trying to set up Electrum on a Mac to use a custom data folder so that I could use an encrypted disk image for storing my wallet/multiple future wallets.

If I run the application from the command line with the -w option I can get the program to run without problems using the custom folder.  However, I'd like to be able to have a Dock icon rather than have to use the command line.

With every other currency I'm using with a standard  -Qt wallet (including the official Bitcoin wallet) I have no problems using Automator to create an application that runs a shell script opening the wallet from a custom location, which lets me add the icon to my Dock.

This doesn't work with Electrum for some reason and I get an error that says "The action 'Run Shell Script' encountered an error.  Check the action's properties and try running the workflow again."

I also tried using a .conf file to see if I could specify the datadir path there, but if I run Electrum from the GUI or the command line it crashes with an error "ConfigParser.MissingSectionHeaderError: File contains no section headers."  which makes me think I'm not formatting the .conf file correctly, but I'm not sure.

If anyone has run into this before and have any suggestions, I'd appreciate them.  Thanks.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Mooncoin OS X wallet now available on: January 03, 2014, 01:17:28 AM
I wanted to post this to the Mooncoin thread, but I only created my account a few days ago here (although I've been reading the site for a while now) so I can't post to the thread.  Looks like the rules require me to post in the Newbies area before I can post anywhere else so here I am.

I don't know why this hasn't been posted to the official Mooncoin thread, but I saw the dev post on Twitter that there are now working wallets for both Windows and Mac OS X.  I just downloaded the OS X client and was able to run it on a Mac with Mountain Lion -- haven't tested it on Mavericks yet, but looks good so far.

The official download page for both clients is located here:

http://download.mooncoin.info/

Hope that helps.
